Martinez Adult Education is the place! Whether you are a parent, employee, active community member, job seeker, or entrepreneur, our wide variety of classes is designed to support the many roles you play in life. From Rami Muth, Superintendent It has been said that challenge is the crucible for greatness and each challenge that we face can be a new opportunity for growth. Einstein proposed three rules of work: He said, Out of clutter, find simplicity, from discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty, lies opportunity. Martinez Adult Education (MAE) is a living tribute to the words of Einstein. We live in very challenging times. The state fiscal crisis has had a significant impact on adult education programs throughout the state. Some districts have chosen to close their programs yet MAE continues to thrive. Why? Martinez Unified School District has a deep and abiding commitment to life-long learning; not just as a catchy phrase but as a life s mission. Martinez Adult Education is a hidden gem and one that truly enhances our entire educational community. Many people find their way to MAE as a means to update their skills or retrain for a different field of work. Some come for parent education programs or to complete a certificate or meet graduation requirements. Regardless of the reason that brings you to Martinez Adult Education I am sure that you will find your time has been well spent. STUDENT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Martinez Adult Education (MAE) can assist eligible adult students with applications for financial assistance through federally sponsored PELL Grants. Eligible students in certificate programs can receive grants up to $555 $5,550 for to cover fees, books, and cost of living. Call (925) Ext. 208 or 220 for an appointment with Carla Little, PELL Officer. MAE offers programs for CalWORKs students. Basic skills may be provided along with vocational training. Participants may be provided child care, books, and transportation. Contact your CalWORKs Case Manager. CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) Pages 3-9 For those seeking financial assistance for career training, MAE works closely with government agencies such as WIA, WIB, CalWORKS, EDD, and Trade Act. In addition, MAE offers many classes that are PELL Grant eligible. PELL Grant eligible classes are those over 600 hours. Currently, our Optical Dispensing Program and Certificate Programs in the BTC are PELL eligible. Our CTE Programs Include: AutoCAD (see page 8) Business Training Certificates (see page 3) Certified Nurse Assistant (see page 9) Floral Design (see page 9) Optical Training (see page 9) PC Troubleshooting and Repair (see page 8) Peace Officers Standards and Training (see page 9) ACADEMIC PREPARATION Page 10 MAE provides classes to help you earn your high school diploma, pass the GED test, and improve your reading and math skills. The high school diploma program is available for in-class and independent study. The Martinez Institute of English is available to adults whose first language is not English. We have students from across the globe joining the fun to improve their English communication skills. Teacher-directed daytime and evening classes are available. Study-at-home materials can be provided for those who cannot attend during the day. We also offer citizenship preparation classes. PARENTING AND FAMILY EDUCATION Page 11 Parenting classes support the 40 Developmental Assets, pathways to successful parenting and character building. The Secret Garden and Growing Garden cooperative preschools offer care givers of pre-k children the chance to gain skills that enhance a child s learning and a family s awareness of child development. The spring and summer schedule includes classes for care givers of infants through age five. On-line classes offer parents assistance with their pre-teen child.
