3 Our 2014 Honoree Barbara Buckley Barbara Buckley was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She moved to Las Vegas in the early 1980s and found work as a maid and waitress in hotels on the Las Vegas Strip. She attended UNLV where she earned her bachelor s degree with honors. She then graduated summa cum laude from the University of Arizona law school. She ran for statewide office in 1994 and voters elected her to the first of nine sessions in the Nevada Assembly. She was elected Majority Floor Leader by her fellow Democrats in the 2001, 2003, and 2005 sessions. She worked to protect the rights of renters and homeowners, advocated for women and children, and reformed the education system in Nevada by helping to implement fullday kindergarten. In 2007, she was elected to be Speaker of the Assembly, the first woman to hold that role. Barbara is the executive director of Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, a nonprofit 501(c) (3) corporation, providing free legal advice, representation and advocacy for individuals who cannot afford a lawyer. Barbara spent her entire legal career with Legal Aid Center, beginning as a staff attorney in After handling individual cases and major class actions, Barbara became executive director of Legal Aid Center in Since that time, Barbara has created many new programs including a partnership with William S. Boyd School of Law, where all first year law students are trained to teach legal classes to the public, a Family Justice Project and a Children s Attorneys Project. Legal Aid Center also runs the Civil Law Self-Help Center and the Family Law Self-Help Center where every year, tens of thousands of litigants have access to legal information and forms so they can properly represent themselves in court. She has received many awards from the community including Democrat of the Year (2003), Assemblywoman of the Year (2007) UNLV Alumni of the Year (2007), Legislator of the Decade, the 2010 Transparent Courthouse Award from the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System, the 2012 Best Public Servant Award, the 2013 Emerge Nevada Woman of the Year and UNLV College of Liberal Arts Alumni of the Year, the 2013 Child Advocate of the Year, and the 2014 Jurisprudence Award from the Anti-Defamation League of Las Vegas. page 4 The Second Annual Justice Miriam Shearing Award Gala, September 20, 2014 page 5

5 Congratulations Barbara! Thanks for all your contributions to our State! Miriam Shearing For more than three decades the Southern Nevada Association of Women Attorneys () has offered support, networking opportunities and guidance for personal and professional development to women at all stages and in all sectors of the legal community. Many people may not understand why the support of other women attorneys is important. After all, women do make up a substantial part of the legal profession. But just last year it was reported that the median income of women lawyers is only 78.9% of that of male lawyers, demonstrating that About gender inequities continue in the profession. Indeed, while 45% of associate positions are held by women, the American Bar Association s recently published statistics reveal that only 20% of women become partners and only 17% equity partners! The total representation of women in Federal and State judgeships is still at only 27.1%. recognizes the need for advancing women s interests and believes that, with a little help from our friends, female lawyers can have it all success in both our personal and professional lives.
