4 ASBESTOS ON CAMPUS Campus Asbestos Procedures 1. Check this publication for the location of known or suspect asbestos containing materials. 2. Do not drill holes, hang plants or objects, sand, grind, or continuously bump or touch building materials known or suspected to contain asbestos. 3. Do not handle, move, or otherwise disturb any known or suspect asbestos containing materials unless specially trained, licensed, and authorized to do so. 4. Contact Risk Management - Office of Environmental Safety at ext or Facility Services at ext for more detailed information on potential asbestos containing materials prior to any work that will disturb building materials such as sheetrock, plaster, stucco, fireproofing, floor tile, pipe insulation, fire doors, and roofing material. 5. If any damaged known or suspect asbestos containing materials are encountered: a. Stop any activities that will generate dust or spread debris. b. Contact Facility Services ext and report as damaged asbestos containing material and/or a potential asbestos spill. c. If you or someone else is contaminated contact the Environmental Safety Officer by calling Public Safety Dispatch at ext , for directions. d. Do not attempt to handle or clean up damaged material unless trained, certified, and authorized to do so. 6. Asbestos is a hazardous material that may cause Asbestosis (a lung disease), Lung cancer, and/or Mesothelioma (cancer of the chest or abdominal lining). The risk of contracting these diseases from asbestos exposure is significantly increased if you smoke. 7. All contracts for any facility alterations or demolitions must conform to the requirements of the Asbestos NESHAPS (EPA Regulations) and Cal/OSHA Asbestos Standards. This includes a survey of the affected area(s) for asbestos containing materials and the results of that survey must be included as part of the bid documents to all prospective bidders as well as referenced in the contract. The required survey can only be provided by Risk Management - Office of Environmental Safety (ext ), or Facility Services (ext ). 8. Fiscal responsibility for any fines or penalties levied against Cal Poly due to improper work or activities performed by campus employees, contractors, etc. may be assigned to the Department, College, or other campus entity that requested, or was responsible for, the work or activity. NOTICE: Anyone personnel performing work on or in Campus facilities: 1. Any work that exposes previously inaccessible areas should proceed with caution until it has been determined that no known, suspect, or previously unidentified asbestos containing materials are present. Contact Facility Services (ext ) or Risk Management - Office of Environmental Safety (ext ) if previously unidentified materials are found. 2. Any building renovation/alteration NOT performed by Facility Services must be submitted to Facility Services for approval under the Campus Building Permit Program. Application forms and guidance may be obtained by contacting Facility Services at ext No work should be done on Campus facilities without prior authorization and it is performed by properly trained personnel using necessary precautions, work practices, and protective equipment. 4. USE THIS BOOKLET!

5 ASBESTOS ON CAMPUS Asbestos on Campus The information presented in this publication informs employees, contractors, bidders, and tenants of the presence and general location of known asbestos containing materials () on campus. The data listed has been compiled from prior contract surveys in conjunction with ongoing sampling by Facility Services and Risk Management staff. The generic term "asbestos" applies to a group of six naturally occurring fibrous materials found in the earth's crust. The two mineralogical classifications for asbestos include Serpentine and Amphibole. Chrysotile of the Serpentine classification is the most prominent type of asbestos used in building materials (95%). The other types of asbestos (e.g., amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, actinolite and anthophyllite) are members of the Amphibole classification and are less frequently used in construction materials (5%). The chemical and fire/heat resistance properties of asbestos, in addition to high tensile strength and flexibility, have resulted in widespread use of asbestos in the construction industry. On campus, the most common applications of include: sprayedon fireproofing, thermal and acoustical insulation, concrete (transite), vinyl floor tiles or linoleum, roofing felts/papers and mastics. Although the beneficial properties of asbestos are recognized, the detrimental health effects associated with occupational exposure (e.g., miners, millers, installers) has resulted in application, production and distribution bans in the United States and some European countries. The adverse health effects associated with occupational exposure in the industrial environment are well documented. The diseases most commonly linked to worker exposure include asbestosis (pulmonary fibrosis), lung cancer, and mesothelioma (rare cancer of the pleura or peritoneum). Generally, the probability of developing an asbestos-related disease depends on: 1) the amount of asbestos an individual is exposed to (concentration), 2) the length of time (duration), and 3) the number of times an individual is exposed (frequency). Individuals who work with asbestos and smoke possess a significantly greater risk of developing lung cancer than non-smokers. At our campus personal and area air monitoring data is collected during asbestos related work to assess potential exposure of our maintenance employees, evaluate engineering controls and ensure compliance with Cal-OSHA regulations. The monitoring data from area sampling has revealed asbestos levels much lower than levels measured in industrial environments where the aforementioned health effects have been observed. The presence of in a building does not present an exposure risk unless fibers become airborne due to physical damage or deterioration and the fibers are inhaled. To minimize the potential for fiber release, employees must adhere to proper work practices to avoid disturbing. The most important factor is to know the location of in your work area and avoid disturbance of the material. For example, prohibited activities in areas where is found include: drilling holes, hanging plants or other objects, and continuous bumping/touching. Furthermore, any type of abrasive action (e.g., sanding, grinding, including on non-friable asbestos materials such as floor tiles and/or transite) is prohibited. If damaged is discovered, please notify Facility Services (ext ) or the Environmental Safety Officer, Risk Management (ext ). Only trained employees are authorized to perform work which may disturb. For additional information regarding on campus, including the review of asbestos monitoring data, please contact Risk Management - Office of Environmental Safety (ext ). The Risk Management office, Building 80, is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This updated report will be published annually This report has been produced pursuant to the requirements specified in the Health & Safety Code, Section 25915, et seq. and Title 8, California Code of Regulations, Sections 1529(k) and 5208(j). The information published in this document describes the general location of known or suspected asbestos containing materials. Maintenance employees are advised to verify the absence/presence of asbestos containing materials by contacting Facility Services, ext , prior to commencing work.

6 ASBESTOS ON CAMPUS How to Use this Booklet Definitions: Asbestos Containing Material () = Any material that has been sampled, analyzed by a qualified laboratory, and found to contain ANY asbestos. Assumed Asbestos Containing Material (Assumed ) = Any material that is readily identifiable and is traditionally manufactured with asbestos such as transite panels or pipe, 9 x9 floor tiles, and roofing sealants. Assumed s are designated by an (a) in the Detailed Description section. Friable = Any material that, when dry, is able to be crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder with hand pressure. Non-Friable s are designated with an * in the Detailed Description section. Non-Asbestos Containing Materials (Non-) = Any Suspect that has been sampled, analyzed by a qualified laboratory, and found to contain no asbestos. Suspect Asbestos Containing Material (Suspect-) = Any material that appears on the list on page 5, is similar in appearance and/or function to a material on page 5, and has not been sampled and analyzed to determine if it contains asbestos. Asbestos Descriptions and What They Mean: When checking on a particular building, read the entire listing for that building! Starting on page 6 all campus buildings are listed in building number order. There is an alphabetical index by building name starting on page 127. Each listing will indicate whether the building has been surveyed. Buildings that are surveyed have been inspected for all accessible suspect asbestos containing materials (Suspect ). If any Suspect is found that is not previously identified in a particular building it must be presumed to contain asbestos until it has been sampled, analyzed, and determined otherwise. When entering previously inaccessible areas use caution until all Suspect s are identified. Buildings that have NOT been surveyed may or may not have had any areas inspected for. Any Suspect must be presumed to contain asbestos until sampled, analyzed, and determined otherwise. A listing of typical suspect asbestos containing materials is contained on page 5. The General Description will indicate if the FLOOR, WALL, CEILING, or ROOF systems as well as MISCELLANEOUS items have components that are known to contain asbestos (), are suspected of containing asbestos (Suspect ), or are known to be non-asbestos (Non-). If any component of a FLOOR, WALL, CEILING, or ROOF system or MISCELLANEOUS item contains asbestos or is suspected of containing asbestos the whole system will be identified as or Suspect- respectively. If all the suspect asbestos components in a system have been identified and determined to be Non- then that system will be listed as Non-. The Detailed Description indicates the status of all known materials within each system or item. If a building has not been surveyed only identified known or assumed asbestos containing materials will be listed and all suspect must be presumed to contain asbestos until sampled, analyzed, and determined otherwise. If you have any questions regarding the information in this book please contact Tim Hastings, Risk Management, Office of Environmental Safety, ext
