Removed institutions with obviously incompatible missions (primarily religious, technical/engineering emphasis, vocational focus, etc.) or obviously divergent student populations (primarily commuter, historically black colleges and universities, single gender campuses, etc.); 225 left. Identified all A+ Schools for B Students and all members of the New American Colleges and Universities consortium; 71 left
Each member of the committee was assigned 7-8 of these institutions to research, focusing on: mission structure (what professional schools do they have, do they have specialized programs like ours, etc.) commitment to the liberal arts across all divisions. The group discussed each of the 71 and narrowed the pool to 35 finalists.
Teams of two were each assigned 6-7 institutions to research in much greater depth, using a set of common questions derived from the faculty retreat priorities. This research emphasized: resources student profile (graduate vs. undergraduate) similar vision and mission values and sensibility curriculum sufficient programs similar to Redlands (NASM, Ed.D s, specialty programs like CDIS or GIS, etc.)

Workshop
1. Consider what distinctive elements of your institution most express or define your mission, values, aspirations, and experiences. 2. Identify the three criteria you believe should be the most important to determine whether another college or university might be considered a genuine peer. 3. For each of the three criteria you develop, write a short description of what this means for your institution, or what a committee should look for in other institutions that would be evidence of similar values or mission.
