2 MASTER OF MANAGEMENT The Master of Management degree provides a general foundation in business and management to individuals with Bachelor s degrees in non-business disciplines.
3 Message from the Dean The 2012 Master of Management graduates are well qualified and ready to become future leaders in communities throughout British Columbia, Canada and the world. The faculty and staff are very proud of them. Achieving a Master of Management degree is a major accomplishment. Students with Bachelor s degrees in non-business disciplines such as arts, science and engineering complete a rigourous nine months of courses in disciplines such as accounting, economics, human resource management, leadership and marketing and in doing so develop business skills that are valuable to a career in any industry or sector. The Faculty of Management at UBC s Okanagan Campus is committed to providing excellent academic programs and the 2012 Master of Management graduates are a product of that commitment. 5 Laura Allaby Human Resources Fully mobile Bachelor of Arts Psychology Okanagan Campus, Kelowna, BC Laura is a strong candidate for entry level Human Resources opportunities, having successfully completed three HR internships with Maple Leaf Foods. At Maple Leaf Foods, Laura was responsible for a significant project involving the relocation and orientation of 150 foreign recruits to Brandon, Manitoba. Laura is currently serving as the Vice President of Events for the Master of Management Society.
6 Janice Bandick Management Trainee Fully mobile Bachelor of Arts Psychology and Sociology, Vancouver, BC Janice has developed a solid communications skill set working with the Metro Vancouver Alliance for the Arts, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada and the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association. While working with these organizations she drafted press releases and newsletters, planned events and coordinated volunteers, delivered presentations to business and school audiences, negotiated with vendors and increased fundraising revenues. Janice also served as Business Manager for UBC Okanagan s Student Newspaper.
7 Tyson Boettcher Medicine Fully mobile Bachelor of Science Honours Biochemistry Okanagan Campus, Kelowna, BC Tyson has strong aspirations to become a rural medical doctor. He is an accomplished researcher, having successfully completed and presented two extensive research projects. He has also had some of his research published. In addition to Tyson s strong foundation in science and management, he brings well developed communication, organization and time management skills.
8 Patrick Brothers Project Management Fully mobile Bachelor of Applied Science with Co-op, Civil Engineering Okanagan Campus, Kelowna, BC Patrick, an Engineer in Training (EIT), has successfully completed four diverse co-op terms with organizations in Alberta, British Columbia and China. This work experience, together with his engineering and management education make him a strong candidate for entry level positions in project management. Patrick is a high energy individual with strong communication and leadership skills.
9 Ricky Chiu Construction Management British Columbia and Alberta Bachelor of Applied Science Civil Engineering, Environmental Option Vancouver, BC Ricky has completed 10 months of international civil engineering internships, over three summers in Hong Kong and Uganda. A water reclamation project which Ricky worked on was awarded an Environmental Merit Award from the Construction Association of Hong Kong. The water distribution system which he designed in a rural Ugandan community helped to decrease the malnutrition rate by 30% and increased the average crop yield by 20%. Ricky is fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
10 Kelly Chmela Human Resources Edmonton and area Bachelor of Arts Psychology University of Victoria Victoria, BC Kelly delivers results by providing excellent customer service, proactively managing deadlines and using her strong communication and organization skills. Her unique combination of psychology and management education make her a strong candidate for entry level Human Resources positions. She also has company start- up experience including the development of policies and procedures. Kelly holds the position Vice President Internal, for the Master of Management Society.
11 Kenton Dalen-Gryckiewicz Management Fully mobile Bachelor of Science, Biochemistry Medical Concentration Okanagan Campus, Kelowna, BC Kenton is a competitive, dynamic individual with strong communication skills. He is eager to leverage his education in science and business to launch a successful management career. In addition to working throughout his University years, Kenton volunteered with several charitable organizations which has helped him develop strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Kenton is currently serving as the Vice President External for the Master of Management Society.
12 Nicky Dhaliwal Management Fully mobile Bachelor of Science Psychology and Biology Okanagan Campus, Kelowna, BC Nicky has a strong understanding of business operations having successfully managed a 60 acre, 40 person orchard in the position of Field Manager. To reduce turnover of seasonal orchard workers she designed and implemented an innovative productivity incentive program. Nicky s strong education in sciences and management, together with her operations work experience position her well for entry level management roles. Nicky has been chosen to serve as a student member of the Dean Selection Committee, responsible for selecting a new Dean for the Faculty of Management at UBC Okanagan.
13 Geoffrey Gibbons Sales Management Fully mobile Bachelor of Science Life Science and Chemistry Vancouver, BC Geoffrey is an accomplished sales professional having received multiple awards for top sales performance in two fast paced sales organizations over a five year period. He delivers outstanding results by providing excellent customer service, building relationships with his clients, setting stretch goals and maintaining superior product knowledge. Geoffrey has also had two years of sales leadership experience where he had responsibility for training, managing and coaching 30 sales people.
14 Mattias Gibbs Engineering British Columbia and Alberta Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering Okanagan Campus, Kelowna, BC Mattias is focused on earning his Professional Engineer certification and initiating a career in mechanical engineering. He is particularly interested in HVAC design and finding ways to reduce cooling and heating loads on buildings. During one of Mattias coop work terms he designed a sophisticated spreadsheet to help calculate a building s heating and cooling loads. The spreadsheet also aided in the design of an HVAC system, including radiant floor and forced air systems. Mattias has recent experience identifying low cost improvements to building design that increased LEED certification status.
15 Callie Hickey Marketing / Communications Kelowna and area Bachelor of Science Human Ecology, with Distinction University of Alberta Edmonton, Alberta callie.hickey@alumni.ubc.ca Callie has designed and launched a successful social marketing campaign and created one of the most innovative housing programs in Canada. She has a strong foundation in design and management and is ready to make a significant contribution to a great organization that values creativity. Her experience in municipal government has exposed her to numerous community stakeholders and political processes, which she has used to help her build relationships and deliver projects on time and on budget.
16 Sunny Hundle Sales or General Management Fully mobile Bachelor of Science with Distinction Biology and Psychology University of Victoria Victoria, BC Sunny is a dynamic leader with strong communication and organizational skills. He has held numerous formal and informal leadership roles and is ready to assume more. His extensive world travels have helped him develop strong relationship building skills which he utilizes to deliver results. Sunny s experience in operations, combined with his management and science education have prepared him to make a significant contribution to the organization he joins. Sunny is currently serving as the President for the Master of Management Society.
17 Mark Ilyin Military Leadership Fully mobile Bachelor of Science Microbiology Okanagan Campus, Kelowna, BC Mark is an accomplished military leader having attained the level of Master-Corporal. He has 11 years of increasing responsibility in the Canadian Forces Army Reserves and has delivered classroom and physical training to hundreds of military recruits, some of whom have completed multiple successful overseas tours. Mark is eager to utilize his newly acquired management knowledge to help him continue to grow and develop his leadership in the military and beyond.
18 Devon Jollimore Operations Management British Columbia Bachelor of Science Environmental Chemistry (Co-op Term) Okanagan Campus, Kelowna, BC Devon has developed a strong interest in pulp and paper manufacturing having worked several summers at Zellstoff Celgar Limited Partnership, a modern Kraft pulp mill in Castlegar, BC. In the summer of 2011 he completed a co-op term at Celgar, where he focused on environmental projects. His unique combination of education in environmental chemistry and management positions him well for entry level operations roles. Devon is a proactive individual who is ready to tackle his next challenge.
19 William Lai Pharmaceuticals, Marketing or Sales September 2013 Fully mobile Bachelor of Science Chemistry Okanagan Campus, Kelowna, BC William is a successful sales person with retail management experience. He has been recognized for his superior sales results in his last three roles. William attributes his success to his strong focus on customer service and his relationship building skills. In his current position of Assistant Store Manager, he has provided strong leadership to the staff, enabling them to achieve sales targets for six consecutive months, with the highest margin in the district. William is fluent in English and Chinese Mandarin.
20 Derek Sand Marketing or Sales Fully mobile Bachelor of Science Biochemistry Okanagan Campus, Kelowna, BC Derek has demonstrated strong leadership in student societies and volunteer organizations. He is currently serving as the Vice President of Finance for the Master of Management Society. As a founder and executive member of the Pre-Dentistry Club at UBC Okanagan, he established a successful volunteer partnership with the Gospel Mission Free Dental Clinic; and as an executive member of the Biochemistry Course Union, he initiated a scholarship award for biochemistry students. Derek has strong communication skills and is very customer focused having worked for many years in service/sales positions.
21 Amanda Spindor Actuary Fully mobile Bachelor of Science Mathematics Okanagan Campus, Kelowna, BC Amanda is committed and excited to begin working towards the Fellowship of Actuaries (FOA) designation which will prepare her for a successful career as an actuary. Her unique combination of mathematics and management education positions her well for actuarial support roles. Amanda is an organized, self motivated individual with strong analytical skills who can work effectively in a team and on her own.
22 Matthew Warren Management Trainee Fully mobile (US Citizen) Bachelor of Arts Political Science University of California Santa Barbara, CA USA Matthew has a unique background in college sports and congressional internships. He knows the commitment required to play college varsity sports and what is necessary for effective teamwork. His experience working for a Congresswoman and Congressman equipped him with strong communication, research and organization skills. Matthew is eager to leverage his athletics, work experience and educational learning to launch a successful career with a reputable organization that will help him reach his maximum potential in exchange for a strong contribution to the organization s success.
23 Kelly Wong Investment Banking Vancouver or Hong Kong Bachelor of Arts Economics and Commerce Vancouver, BC Kelly has worked in various roles in Hong Kong and Vancouver, including an Assistant Manager position at a start-up speciality bakery in Yaletown where she was responsible for designing the business operating system, hiring and training all employees, managing supplies and designing a marketing plan. Kelly plans to write the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exam later this year in hopes of applying her education and work experience to a successful career in investment banking. Kelly is fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.
