BOSTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW GRADUATE AND INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RESUME HANDBOOK FOR DOMESTIC LL.M. STUDENTS Boston University School of Law Graduate and International Programs Professional Development 765 Commonwealth Avenue, Room 1534 Boston, MA Web site:

THE LEGAL RESUME Your legal resume is your primary marketing tool. Its purpose is to introduce you to potential employers and give them a snapshot of your unique accomplishments and experiences that set you apart from other candidates. Employers typically spend less than one minute scanning a resume, so your resume must be able to create a good impression at a glance. Remember also that your resume is the first sample of your written work that employers see; so you want it to be professional and well thought-out. Depending on the scope or focus of your job search, one resume may not be sufficient. Consider creating an alternate resume to reflect your interest in a particular specialty (such as international law), your ties to a geographic area or your longstanding involvement with an organization or charity. Further, because your resume can quickly become outdated, you should be prepared to revise and update your resume frequently. BEFORE YOU START Before you start composing your resume, you should ask yourself the following questions: 1. What are my major accomplishments? 2. What are the skills that set me apart from other candidates? 3. What aspects of my background demonstrate that I possess the skills, knowledge, and experience that an employer may find attractive? 4. Who will be reading my resume? What are they interested in knowing? If I was an employer what would I want to know about a potential candidate? What information would I find helpful in making a decision on whom to interview? 5. How can I present this information in a format that is appealing and easy to read? A. Remember the Reader BASIC GUIDELINES The legal community is conservative and legal employers expect to see a traditional resume. Your attempts to be creative and "get noticed" may leave a potential employer questioning your discretion and judgment. Also, it is advisable to create more than one resume depending on the scope or focus of your career search. For example, the resume you submit to a public interest organization should include additional experiences important to those employers that a private law firm may not be as interested in seeing. B. Create a Professional Look 1. Length Employers typically spend less than a minute reviewing a resume, so it is crucial to be clear and concise. The traditional view is that a law student resume should not be longer than one page unless the student s relevant experiences and accomplishments warrant continuation onto a second page. A basic guideline for 1L students is that you resume should be one page unless you 1

were out of school for three or more years or had three or more jobs while you were out. If your resume continues onto a second page, it should fill at least half of the second page. Be sure to include your name and contact information on the top of the second page as well. Resist the temptation to extend your resume to a third page. It is best to summarize your non-legal experience in a brief paragraph that accurately reflects your experience and emphasizes the transferable skills relevant to a legal employer without using too much of your resume space. If you have published extensively, consider attaching a separate page entitled Publications. 2. Style It is important to make your resume visually pleasing. Use bold letters, italics, varying font sizes (but not varying typefaces), underlines or capital letters to emphasize certain parts of your resume including your name, school and employers' names, job titles, and section headings, but do not go overboard. Some good resumes become hard to read because they are too visually busy. Be consistent with formatting throughout your resume. For instance, if you bold and underline the names of the schools you attended in the "Education" section, do the same with the names of employers in the "Experience" section. Be consistent within categories and abbreviations: if one position title is in italics, put all position titles in italics or if you use JD instead of Juris Doctor, use BA, MBA or Ph.D. Italics are used for degree designations, such as magna cum laude. Do not use full sentences (start with an action verb and omit personal pronouns and articles). 3. Paper You should use white or off-white (i.e. beige, ecru, cream, ivory, egg-shell) high-quality paper. Pastels, patterns and bright colors are not suitable for professional correspondence. You can find wide selections of resume paper at Kinko s, Staples, Office Depot and similar stores. You should use the same paper for your resume, cover letter and reference page. Only your writing sample can be printed on Xerox paper. Your resume should be laser printed with black ink. Documents printed on most types of ink-jet printers can bleed and look unprofessional. A matching envelope makes a professional statement. However, depending on your preference, you can also use an 8 ½ x 11 manila or white envelope. Use computer printed labels for your mailings. 4. Font Use an easy to read, businesslike font. Times New Roman, Book Antiqua, Century Schoolbook, Garamond and Ariel are all good choices. Avoid Courier, which looks like an antiquated typewriter and wastes space. Avoid also script, ornate, decorative styles or multiple fonts. Avoid small fonts. An 8-point font will make your resume illegible. While it may seem better to keep your resume to one page by using a smaller font, do you want the hiring partner to be forced to squint to read your resume? Generally resumes should be in 10, 11 or 12 point font depending on the typeface. 2

5. Margins While margins may vary to accommodate individual situation, normally a resume s margins will be about 1 inch on the left and right and between 0.6 and 1.2 inches on the top and bottom. Margins that are.2" wide will make your resume appear crowded, while margins that are 1.5" wide will present the impression that you don't have enough to offer to even fill a single page. You need to leave margins that are wide enough to eliminate a cramped feeling, while at the same time keeping your margins small enough to prevent the appearance of space-filling. Strive for consistency and centering throughout your resume in terms of spacing within the text and the white space at the borders. 6. Organization Employers expect to see your education and experience listed in reverse chronological order (i.e. you list your most recent experience and/or degree first). In addition, while you are in school, your education should appear before your experience. C. Content of a Resume 1. The Heading Your heading should include your name, current address, and a telephone number where an employer may reach you or leave a message. Be sure your address is appropriate and think carefully before using a cell phone contact number. It is easy to be caught off guard or in a situation where you can t speak. If you use an answering machine be sure that its message is conservative, professional and identifies you by your full business name ( Hi, this is Skip. Leave one may be confusing to people who are looking for Cameron Mitchell Barnett). If you think that it is difficult to identify your gender from your first name, you can add, Ms. or Mr. before your name. This will help employers when addressing correspondence. If you are looking for employment locally, we suggest that you list only your local address as shown below. However, you should indicate both your local and permanent address if you want to show ties to the geographic area of the employer to whom you are applying (see example 4 below). Centering your name and contact information at the top of the page is the standard format for your heading. There are, however, other options that may help you save some space. Example 1 JANE M. DOE 1069 Beacon Street, Apartment 4 Brookline, MA (617) Example 2 3

JANE M. DOE 1069 Beacon Street, Apartment 4, Brookline, MA (617) Example 3 JANE M. DOE 1069 Beacon Street, Apartment 4 Brookline, MA (617) Example 4 JANE M. DOE Local Address Permanent Address 1069 Beacon Street, Apartment Oak Street Brookline, MA Naples, FL (617) (321) Education Educational Institutions. The Education section of your resume should list all educational institutions starting with your and all degrees awarded, including bachelors, masters and PhDs (or equivalents). You should list your educational experience in reverse chronological order starting with the most current. Thus, BUSL will be the first law school listed on your resume. There is no need to include your high school, with two possible exceptions: 1) if you went to a school with an exceptionally strong alumni network; or 2) if you want to demonstrate ties to a geographic area. For each entry, include the name of the institution and its location (city, state/province, country); then state the degree received followed by the month and year in which you received (or will receive) the degree. Grade Point Average (GPA) and Class Rank. Whether to include your GPA on your résumé or not is a personal decision. However, be aware that some employers may assume your grades are poor if you don t include them. Generally, if your GPA is 3.0 or above you should consider including it. If you choose to list your GPA, you must do so in the exact manner presented by the Registrar's Office. All BUSL GPAs extend to the hundredths place. Students must not round up their GPAs. You may also choose to include your class rank on your résumé. If so, list your exact GPA and then provide your class rank in parentheses. For example if your GPA is 3.73 and your class rank is 7 th out of 68 students, then list your GPA as 3.73 (7/68). Honors and Activities. Honors include academic achievements, such as graduating cum laude, scholarships, awards, moot court, trial team and scholarly publication participation. The activities section demonstrates your interest, leadership potential, and well roundedness. Use subheadings under each educational institution to list Honors and/or Awards under the school to which they relate. Please note that Latin honors (i.e. cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude) are not capitalized and should be italicized. Use your discretion in listing activities and list only those in which you have been actively involved. 4

You should also include on your résumé any serious legal writing you have done, whether published or not. Remember that if you might expect to discuss your work in detail during an interview. If you have published articles or papers while in school, you should include them on your résumé under include the title or subject and, if applicable, the citation. Caption this subheading "Publication," "Research," "Certification Paper," or "Thesis." If you have numerous honors or activities, be selective and include only those that are most prestigious or most likely to be of interest to employers. If you have undergraduate honors that are likely to be unfamiliar to those outside the school community, you may want to include a parenthetical explaining the honor (e.g. awarded to three students for exceptional leadership or awarded to top 5 students in each section, etc.). Example 1 EDUCATION Boston University School of Law, Boston, MA LL.M. in Taxation, anticipated May 2010 GPA: Honors: Activities: Publications: Boston University School of Law, Boston, MA J.D. magna cum laude, May 2008 GPA: 3.83 Honors: Boston University Law Review Editor-in-Chief ( ) Activities: Albers Honors Moot Court Competition Public Interest Project - Auction Co-chair Student Advisor Smith College, Northampton, MA B.A. in English Language and Literature, May 2002 GPA: 3.39 Activities: Dormitory President; Rugby player; Dee-jay Example 2 EDUCATION: Boston University School of Law, Boston, MA Candidate for LL.M. in Banking and Financial Law, May 2010 Boston College, Boston, MA J.D., May 2007 Activities: President, Labor and Employment Society Treasurer, Public Interest Project Cornell University, Ithaca, NY Bachelor of Science, Industrial and Labor Relations, May 2006 G.P.A.:

As with your Education, you should list your work experience in reverse chronological order. Describe current positions in the present tense and prior positions in the past tense. It is appropriate to list both legal and non-legal positions, regardless of whether you were paid. If the experience is/was relevant to the type(s) of jobs in which you are interested, include it on your resume. First, write the employer's name and location, and your official job title and dates of employment. Next, write a brief paragraph describing your job responsibilities and the tasks that you performed. Do not remove non-legal experience assuming that it is irrelevant. Rather, highlight your accomplishments and measurable results from your previous non-legal jobs as well as those skills that you have developed which are transferable to the legal field (oral and written communication, negotiation, organization and management of complex projects, research and analysis). Start each sentence with a descriptive action verb. See list of verbs later in this section. You should never reveal the name of any client or the specific nature of a case or deal which would constitute confidential attorney-client work product. Instead of using names, you can use wording such as, multi-million dollar litigation, antitrust case involving multi-national company or highprofile acquisition of multi-national holding company. Do not use acronyms, abbreviations or colloquial/industry terms without an explanation. If you are applying for public interest employment, you should describe community activities and 6

involvement that demonstrate long-term commitment to public service. The Experience section of your resume is your opportunity to brag about all that you have done in a concise and professional manner. By emphasizing significant life events and experiences, you will educate the employer not only about what you have already done, but also about how you may potentially contribute to his/her respective firm or company. You can also use your "Experience" section to describe community activities, educational internships and, if applicable, military status. When describing legal experience or training, use the appropriate legal terms in order to instill in prospective employers a greater degree of confidence in your ability. Avoid wordy phrases. Use short sentences that begin with action verbs (see examples that follow) to communicate your strengths and provide a brief description of the substantive work you performed. When truthful and appropriate, use adjectives and adverbs, e.g., "successfully," to advocate for yourself. Take a look at the following Before and After job description for an example of how to instill life and personality into your resume Before: BUSH & CHENEY LLP, Boston, MA Law clerk, summer 2008 Researched case law and drafted memoranda in the areas of corporate law and real estate finance. Independently drafted partnership agreement related to acquisition of low-income housing project by syndication of investors. a. Judicial Clerkships/internships Judicial clerkships/internships, can be listed in two different ways: 1) naming the court as the employer and mentioning the judge in the position description; or 2) naming the judge as the employer Example 1: Land Court Division, Superior Court of Massachusetts, Boston, MA Law Clerk/Judicial Intern for the Honorable Keith C. Long, May September 2008 Researched and wrote memoranda in preparation for motion hearings; drafted opinions on a variety of legal matters; observed oral arguments before court. 7

Words often misspelled: Appellate, committed/commitment, constitutional, criterion (pl. criteria); alumnus (pl. alumni); alumna (pl. alumnae), cum laude; memorandum (pl. memoranda); precede/proceed; Words often misused: Juris Doctor (not Doctorate); affect/effect; capital/capitol; complement/compliment; council/counsel; oriented (not orientated); perspective/prospective; regardless/irregardless; advice/advise. The following page contains a list of descriptive action verbs that may be useful when writing the Experience section of your resume. 9

10 Examples of action verbs (remember to use appropriate verb tense): achieve adapt administer advise advocate allocate amend analyze apply argue arrange assist award challenge collaborate compile compose conduct contribute control coordinate counsel create defend delegate demonstrate design determine develop devise devote direct disseminate donate draft edit effect eliminate enforce engage establish exercise expand explain explore expose evaluate facilitate fulfill gain generate guide implement improve increase inform initiate inquire inspect institute instruct interview interpret introduce investigate litigate locate maintain manage monitor negotiate obtain operate organize participate perform plan prepare present produce propose prosecute protect provide recommend regulate reorganize report represent research resolve review revise schedule select serve settle streamline strengthen study suggest survey supervise support teach train win write

4. Languages If you speak any other language(s) besides English you may want to list it/them under a separate heading. You do not need to be fluent to mention your training in another language. However, be sure to be accurate in the way you describe your oral and written language abilities. An employer could put your language skills to the test during an interview. Use careful wording to describe your language skills. Examples: Fluent Japanese Study of Russian Fluent German, Proficient Spanish Native Portuguese, Fluent English, Proficient Spanish Native Urdu, Fluent English, Working knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic French (native language), German (fluent), Spanish (reading) 5. Skills and Interests Including a Skills and Interests section is optional. However, it can show that you are a wellrounded and interesting person. It can also serve as a good conversation starter and, on occasion, enable you to make a connection with your interviewer. It is appropriate to list community involvement, travel experiences and business skills. However, there is no need to record those abilities the employer will take for granted. Every lawyer should have general computer skills and know how to research online. Also, avoid making very general statements, such as "enjoy sports and reading." Examples of skills/interests: enjoy rugby and golf semi-professional blues musician interests include war films, politics, and opera Lived in Hong Kong; traveled extensively throughout Europe 6. Licenses You should list professional licenses and certificates, such as RN, Certified Financial Planner, Professional Engineer, CPA or Real Estate Broker. List legal and non-legal affiliations, including name of organization, state of issuance. Example Certified Public Accountant, Certificate Number 12345, October Bar Status You should include a Bar Status or Professional Status section, if you are admitted to practice law or if you plan to sit for the Bar Exam in any jurisdiction in the U.S. There are several places on your resume where you can appropriately place this section: at the top, before or after the Education section, or at the very end. List where and when you were admitted to practice law or if/when you intend to sit for a Bar Exam. 11

Examples: Sitting for Massachusetts Bar Examination, July 2006 Sat for the Massachusetts Bar Examination, July 2005; Awaiting results; Passed July 2005 Massachusetts Bar Exam, awaiting admission Admitted to practice in Massachusetts, May Publications You should consider listing any legal work that you have published (i.e. thesis, article, note, etc.) under a separate heading called Publications. Published work provides evidence of your writing and scholarly abilities and it may make you more attractive to employers. Remember that if you refer to your written work in your resume, you may be expected to discuss its substance during an interview. If your list of publications is quite long, you may consider listing them in an attached page. 9. Items NOT to Include on a Resume A job objective stating the type of position you seek--for the legal market, a job objective would be either too narrow or so broad as to be meaningless. Personal information such as your health, weight, age or marital or parental status-- these items are not relevant to your candidacy. Pre-college education it is rarely recommended to include your high school information on you resume. Exceptions: 1) you attended a highly competitive or highly regarded high school; 2) you were the valedictorian or won a prestigious award; or 3) you wish to highlight a connection to a city not otherwise obvious from the rest of your resume. Your score on a law school (or equivalent) entrance examination (including the LSAT). The phrase "References, writing samples and transcripts are available upon request -- this statement, generally found on the last line of the resume, is unnecessary. A list of references-- references should be included in a separate document entitled References. Slang or contractions "I" or "Me -- Experience descriptions should begin with the action verb in the appropriate tense (i.e. past or present). The subject, I, is understood and should not be written. 10. Proofread Carefully Review your draft resume for accuracy and clarity and for grammatical, typographical, spelling and formatting errors. Be especially aware of verb tense errors; descriptions of positions you no longer hold or activities in which you no longer participate should be described in the past tense. In a profession that demands precision, errors are 12

unacceptable and employers will often discard a resume with even one error. Spelling and grammatical errors also reflect poorly on the presentation of your English language skills. Before you finalize your resume, have one or two friends proof it for you as well. Have others review your resume. Consult the Professional Development staff, an alumna/us, another attorney or a fellow student. Consider any advice and then decide whether you are comfortable incorporating comments into your resume. 11. Resume Integrity The information that you include on your resume must be completely accurate and truthful to the best of your knowledge. Willfully misrepresenting yourself on a resume is a serious matter which, when discovered, will most assuredly bar you from many employment opportunities. In addition, misrepresentation on a resume could lead to disciplinary action by the School of Law that, in turn, may prohibit you from being admitted to the Bar. Article III of the School of Law's Disciplinary Regulations provide that "[a]ny student who engages in unprofessional conduct with regard to any matter, whether or not related to the School of Law or to Boston University, may be subject to disciplinary action pursuant to these Regulations." Article III sets forth that "Unprofessional conduct includes (b.) conduct that involves dishonesty, fraud, or deceit; or (c.) conduct that violates the standards of professional ethics established for lawyers or otherwise adversely reflects on the fitness of the student for admission to the bar." Furthermore, the Disciplinary Rules of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts provide that "[a] lawyer shall not... [e]ngage in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation." Mass. Sup. Jud. Ct. Rule 3:07 DR Most students who misrepresent themselves on their resumes do so inadvertently by listing something as an honor that the School considers only an activity, or word a description so as to take full credit for a project that was a joint effort or on which they only assisted. Unfortunately, there are people who knowingly misrepresent themselves on their resumes (like rounding up their GPA) believing that no one will find out. As a deterrent to misrepresentation, please know that employers do verify students' credentials and the Professional Development staff randomly spot-checks student resumes for accuracy. Remember: Misrepresentation on a resume can result in losing access to all BU Law advising services, including recruiting. You could also be subject to disciplinary action. a. Representation of GPA and Grades on Resumes All truthful and verifiable grading information may be presented on a resume subject to BU Law s policies as outlined below. The following representations are permissible. If you seek to represent your grades in any other fashion, you must first consult with the Professional Development staff. GPA: If you choose to include a GPA from another educational institution on your résumé, you must do so in accordance with the rules and regulations of that school. 13

If you choose to include your current LL.M. GPA or grades, you must do so in the exact manner presented by the Registrar's Office. All BUSL GPAs extend to the hundredths place. Students must not round up their GPAs or attempt to approximate their standing. Alternatively, you may include course names and corresponding grades to date. b. Representation of Honors and Awards on Resumes The "Honors" category on your résumé may only include school conferred honors as recognized by a former educational institution or by BUSL. Honors are generally academic and/or achievement-based recognitions. Examples of law school honors include class rank, academic scholarships, and competitive moot court championships. BUSL-recognized LL.M. honors are limited to the following: The American Law Scholar Prize The Outstanding American Law Achievement Award The Graduate Tax Alumni Academic Achievement Award The Graduate Banking Law Alumni Academic Achievement Award The A. John Serino Outstanding Banking Law Student Prize If you have any questions about law school or LL.M. honors, please consult the Professional Development staff or your LL.M. program office. 14
