Web Services Overview Ajith Abraham 1

What is Web Services? Component applications that can be published in the Internet-based distributed environment, can be searched and can be executed dynamically. Use XML-based open standards such as SOAP and WSDL, so Web Services are o Platform independent o Hardware independent o Programming Language independent A next-generation of CORBA, DCOM, EJB, EDI, 2

History 3

History Distributed Computing Technology o RPC(Remote Procedure Call) o CORBA(Common Object Request Broker Architecture) o DCOM(Distributed Component Object Model) o Java RMI(Remote Method Invocation) o EJB(Enterprise Java Beans) EDI(Electric Data Interchange) XML-RPC Web Services 4

Problems of Existing Technology CORBA o APIs are too complex. DCOM o Windows Platform dependent EJB o Java Language dependent o A patent right exists. EDI o High cost o Use company specific protocol 5

Characteristics of Web Services Platform, Hardware and Programming Language independent Openness o Use open standards such as SOAP, WSDL Extensibility Flexibility o Use XML-based protocols Drawbacks (Research Issues) o Security, Transaction Management, 6

Web Services Architecture Service Providers o Create web services o Publish them to the outside world by registering the services with service brokers Service Brokers o Maintain a registry of published services Service Requesters o Find required services by searching the service broker s registry o Bind their applications to the service provider to use the service 7

Web Services Architecture WSDL SOAP Message SOAP Message 8

Basic Standards for Web Services SOAP(Simple Object Access Protocol) o How to communicate with Web Services? WSDL(Web Services Description Language) o How to describe Web Services? UDDI(Universal Description, Discovery and Integration) o A registry of Web Services o Implemented as Web Service 9

SOAP Simple Object Access Protocol A simple protocol to communicate with service providers Very simple than other protocols such as COM, EJB, CORBA (Light Weight Standard XML Protocol) Design Goals o Simplicity o Extensibility Standardized by W3C(World Wide Consortium) 10

WSDL Web Services Description Language A specification for describing Web Services. WSDL describe o operations they provide o input and output of the operations o how to access the services Standardized by W3C(World Wide Consortium) 11

UDDI Universal Description, Discovery and Integration A registry for Web Services Provides a mechanism to register and locate Web Services UDDI is itself a Web Service. Standardized by OASIS(Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) Semantic based service discovery 12

Other Standards WSRM(Web Services Reliable Messaging) WSS(Web Services Security) WSBPEL(Web Services Business Process Execution Language) 13

WSRM Web Services Reliable Messaging Support reliable communication for Web Services The current specification defines the following reliability features: o Guaranteed message delivery, or At-Least-Once delivery semantics o Guaranteed message duplicate elimination, or At-Most-Once delivery semantics o Guaranteed message delivery and duplicate elimination, or Exactly- Once delivery semantics o Guaranteed message ordering for delivery within a group of messages Standardized by OASIS(Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) 14

WSS Web Services Security The specification describes enhancements to SOAP messaging to provide message integrity and confidentiality Standardized by OASIS(Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) 15

WSBPEL Web Services Business Process Execution Language Business process is a procedure to execute for achieving business goal. WSBPEL is a specification for describing executable business process for Web Services. Define a new Web Service by composing a set of existing services Standardized by OASIS(Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) 16

Web Services Standards Stack WSBPEL, WSCI Integration WSRM WSS Transaction Coordination Quality Of Service WSDL. UDDI Description SOAP XML, Encoding Other protocols Messaging Transports Transport 17

Semantic Web Services Problem of current Web Services o Hard to find what I exactly want o Hard to integrate existing services o Current Web services infrastructure focuses on only syntactic interoperability. A Semantic Web service is a Web Service whose description is in a language that has well-defined semantics. Semantic Web services reply on the Semantic Web to describe the following: o The content of the messages that they exchange o The order of the messages exchanged o The state transitions that result from such exchanges 18

Goal of Semantic Web Services Machine understandable Web services Provides semantic interoperability as well as syntactic interoperability Seamless interoperation among different Web services Automation of Web service discovery, selection, composition, negotiation, invocation, monitoring, management, recovery and compensation 19
