1 NEWS & VIEWS October 2012 Volume 32 Issue 10 Mayor Butch Zaragoza State of the City A lberto C. Zaragoza, Jr. has always been an individual with a vision for reaching greater heights and serving the needs of the public. As Mayor, he has a vision for making Vestavia Hills a thriving and competitive city that excels among its peers. Prior to becoming Mayor, Alberto C. Butch Zaragoza spent a nearly 40- year tenure with the Vestavia Hills Fire Department, the last ten of which he served as Fire Chief. During that time, he also attained a number of leadership roles within the state and region, several of which he continues to perform. At the age of 16, Butch Zaragoza began his career as a volunteer firefighter who was continually setting his sights on greater responsibility. His ability to handle a wide variety of responsibilities was well recognized and he was assigned a number of positions Mayor Butch Zaragoza on various committees within the City. This gave him the opportunity to intimately learn the operations of the City, and he was a natural fit to be the next mayor in During his administration, the City has constructed a new LEED gold-certified library, a new sports complex, and sidewalks, in addition to reconstruction from storm damage to the Police Department LUNCHEON SPONSOR Charter Business (Continued on page 8) Charter Business is the business entity of Charter Communications, and a leading provider of scalable, cost-effective broadband communications solutions to businesses. 2 MESSAGE FROM MARTHA NEWS AND VIEWS Page 2 D ear Fellow Chamber Members, I want to use my message in this monthly newsletter to give a very big thank you to two wonderful board members, Leigh DeWitt, currently our Chair of Membership, and Scott Perry, past Chair of the Chamber Board and current Chair- Elect. Leigh DeWitt, with Utility Auditing, Inc., has been actively involved in the Chamber since She began as an Ambassador for the Chamber, which is an excellent way to make the most of your involvement and networking with the Chamber. In 2011 she served as the chair of Martha Cook the Ambassador program, making it even more vibrant and active than before. In 2011 she joined the Board as a Director. In 2012 she gave us the honor of agreeing to serve as Chair of Membership for your Board. She has done an excellent job coordinating contact efforts with each member and thanking those members with membership tenures 10 years or longer. Unfortunately for our community, Leigh, her husband, Dan, and their two young children will moving to the Atlanta area next month as Dan takes a new position with his company. Fortunately for Leigh, she will fit right in in her new home. I have no doubt she will get involved quickly in her new community and will be as special to it as she has been to us. THANK YOU, Leigh for your hard work and dedication. I know how hard it is to find time to get it all done. Somehow you ALWAYS did it. WE WILL MISS YOU! The next Board member I would like to thank is Scott Perry, owner of Contri Bros. Gift Basket, Inc. Scott s family business, which is always donating door prizes, putting together speaker thank you gifts, and catering events for the Chamber, has been a member of the Chamber since Scott served on the Board of the Chamber from 2005 to 2010, and served effectively and humorously as Chair of the Board in As you can tell from Scott s record and active involvement, he is always giving back to his community and the Chamber. Recently he agreed to give back even more by serving a second term as Chair. That is correct. Scott agreed, with the Board s approval, to fill the shoes of John Henley, who was serving as Chair-Elect of the Board until he won a seat our city council in August. After John resigned so he could devote the time needed to our city s government, Scott said yes to the Board s request to complete the final months of John s term and then serve a second term as Chair beginning in January Scott, I cannot thank you enough. You are a good friend, a smart businessman, and a wonderful asset to our community. I am honored to serve with you on the Board again. These two board members certainly deserve a pat on the back for their years of service and continued service in our community. When you see them, please tell them I said so. Martha Cook McCallum Hoaglund Cook & Irby, LLC

Chamber Checks are a community gift check program designed to encourage people to "Shop Vestavia Hills" and keep money in our local economy. Chamber Checks make great gifts for employees, teachers, coaches and more! Here's how it works: The Chamber of Commerce has a bank account set up specifically for this program. When a Chamber Check is purchased, we deposit the money into that account. When a customer brings a Chamber Check to your business, they date it and write your business name in the "Pay to the Order of" line like a normal check. Chamber Checks come in increments of $10 and $25. If their total purchase is less than the full amount of the check, you give them change for the difference. You deposit the Chamber Check just as you would any other check. Money stays in Vestavia Hills! If you would like to participate, please
