1 About the Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE) Program The ACFRE Certification Process four sequential components complete each before moving on to next 1. Application 2. Written Examination 3. Portfolio 4. Oral Peer Review 2 years to complete Timing calendar begins when application accepted take written exam within 1 year 1

2 Cost $400 per component Portfolio & Oral fees paid together ($800) Any component re-do fee = $400 ACFRE Process Ifs Written Exam, Portfolio, & Oral Review may each be attempted 3 times One, one-year extension may be requested at any time Component 1: Application Application documents eligibility: * Employment / Experience * Education * Service to the profession / sector * Understanding of Ethics 2

3 Eligibility -- Works in the profession -- Holds CFRE or FAHP credential -- Adherence to the AFP Code of Ethics years full-time experience in fundraising -- BA / BS or additional five years of full-time experience in fundraising More Eligibility Within previous 5 years, 15 hours of: -- senior-level management courses -- senior-level leadership courses Within previous 5 years, 10 hours of: -- senior-level ethics courses Still More Eligibility -- member of field-related professional organization -- volunteer service to not-for-profit sector Note: ALL eligibility requirements must be met before submitting application 3

4 Component 2: Written Examination Prospect Identification Cultivation Solicitation Recognition Gift Management Management Advancing Philanthropy Advancing the Profession Written Examination Application approved; register for exam Can take exam up to three times Can arrange test location / date Component 3: Portfolio Materials developed by candidate * Planning Document * Case Statement * Professional Competencies (2 each): Writing; Creativity; Management; Teaching/Training 4

5 Portfolio Single 3-ring binder, max. 3 wide Audio/video o.k. if fit in 3 binder Portfolio Piece ID Form summarizes development, use, results, & ethical implications Portfolio Pass written exam before submit Portfolio May resubmit Portfolio three times Portfolio Each portfolio is judged on Its own merits, without regard to apparent or intentional similarity to that of any other candidate. 5

6 Component 4: Oral Peer Review 3-hour oral exam administered by a threemember panel of ACFREs held at IHQ, International Conference, or Leadership Academy Oral Review 4 General Questions minutes prep time 4 Specialty questions -- 2 questions in each of 2 areas selected by the candidate -- no prep time Expected responses: -- global -- specific Oral Review -- experiential -- theoretically-based 6

7 Oral Review -- knowledge / understanding of management & leadership principles -- problem-solving skills -- understanding of development process (planning, implementation, evaluation) -- ability to organize thoughts and articulate Oral Review -- understanding of fundraising ethics and ethical decision-making, based on AFP Code of Ethics Failure to meet this standard at any time during Oral Review will result in an automatic fail Oral Review Complete Portfolio component then register for Oral Review May attempt Oral Review three times 7
