3 GENERAL INFORMATION Rhodes University is committed to excellence in research and to developing and maintaining a culture of research. As a result Rhodes actively fosters postgraduate studies and the production of innovative and creative Master s and Doctoral graduates. The University has set itself a target of being 25% postgraduate in the long term. At present 23% of the Grahamstown campus student body are postgraduates. Minimum Requirements The usual requirement for the admission of research students to postgraduate degrees is at least a second class pass in a three or four year degree. Redress considerations, including the availability of funds for previously disadvantaged students, are also taken into account. Graduates from other institutions are usually accepted on the basis of their qualifications and the recommendation of referees. Applications are normally approved by Faculty Boards and Senate. Accommodation Housing for postgraduates is provided in postgraduate residences and in limited apartment accommodation close to the University. The Gavin Reilly Postgraduate Village provides secure cluster living conditions in a country setting. Support During the course of their studies research students are encouraged to resolve all problems or difficulties by liasing with their supervisor/s, HOD s or Deans. In addition, the Dean of Research convenes Postgraduate Forums for students to discuss their ideas and ways of enhancing their research. Funding Funding for postgraduate study is available through scholarships, bursaries and University Council loans and is administered through the office of the Dean of Research by a Postgraduate Financial Aid Administrator. To attract high quality postgraduate students, the University has committed funds to establish two open scholarship schemes, the Henderson Scholarships and the Rhodes University Scholarships, in addition to externally funded Mellon Scholarships, SASOL Scholarships, Atlantic Philanthropies and Allan Gray Scholarships, which are specifically for black postgraduates and women. The value of these scholarships varies between R for, R for Master s studies and R for Doctoral studies. Approximately R4,5 million per annum is being made available to fund new scholarships and for the renewal of existing scholarships. The majority of the bursaries offered are available mainly to South African citizens. However, the University s merit award scheme is available to all full-time registered students regardless of nationality. Those students who obtain a first class pass at third-year level and register for, a first class and register for Master s, or a first class 1

4 Master s and register for a, automatically qualify for such awards. The degree Scholarship is to the value of half the tuition fee, whilst the Master s and degree Scholarships are valued at R In addition the top 11 graduates also receive additional funding ranging from R5 000 to R8 000, whilst the top five graduates automatically qualify for awards ranging from R3 000 to R External scholarships are offered by organisations such as the NRF, the MRC, the WRC and Industry. A Rhodes University Council loan scheme is in place to assist with tuition costs. The University also provides funding to students through their departments in the form of Graduate Assistant Bursaries and student assistance grants in return for which bursars are required to assist with tutoring and demonstrating in the department. It is often necessary for research students to travel during the course of their studies to present papers at local conferences. Support for these activities can be requested from the Joint Research Council Student Travel fund administered by the Dean of Research. Overall, approximately 1000 awards each year are made to Rhodes postgraduate students (totalling R22.5 million). Types of Degrees The University awards post-graduate diploma s as well as Honour s, Master s and Doctoral degrees in a variety of fields. These degrees and diploma s can be completed either via coursework and mini-thesis, examination, research project or thesis, or by combination of these. In some cases, the final year of a four-year undergraduate course is equivalent to an degree. Master s degrees in certain disciplines are essentially professional degrees with a minimal research component while in others they are almost entirely research project based. Rhodes is also introducing research based Master s programmes for graduates targeting an industry-based career. These programmes will include training in technology and business skills and will be multi-disciplinary with a period of the training spent as an intern in industry. Most Doctoral courses or s require a thesis (often with fieldwork), written on any topic within the field of study, chosen by the candidate, and initially approved by the relevant Department. This approval is contingent on the availability of an appropriately qualified supervisor within the Department. Unless otherwise stated, the degree by thesis (with fieldwork) may be taken as Standard for both Master s and Doctoral degrees. For further information on any of the courses mentioned below, potential candidates are invited to contact the University or have a look at the University s website (http://www.rhodes.ac.za). 2
