1 2203 G 650 Winter: Writing for Publication: From Deadline to Headline. Online Office: Lawson Hall 3270 Instructor: Melanie Chambers Office hours: By appointment Course Description From Deadline to Headline is designed to teach students how to write for various forms of publication including news stories, profiles, and magazine feature articles. Students will learn the ability to communicate information, arguments, and analyses accurately and reliably, orally and in writing to a range of audiences. Students will develop skills in the research, writing, editing, formatting and marketing of materials for publication. Students will acquire the ability to develop story ideas, research, interview, write query letters, produce features, revise and edit, prepare and meet the requirements of specific genres and publications. Strong emphasis will be given to the practicalities of writing as a career, including getting started, working towards success (and coping with rejection) and learning how to manage the organizational side. Students will be encouraged to submit writing to publications specifically set up for this course and to outside publications when applicable. Online class work/participation 10% Due January 24 (week 3) 15% Due January 31 (week 4) 20% Due February 14 (week 6)/Feb 28 (week 7) 15% Due March 7 (Friday week 8); March 14 (week 9) 30% Due March 28 (week 11); April 4 (week 12) 10% (see note below) Submitting Assignments All assignments are to be typed and double-spaced, and must have your name, course name, the first page. Assignments (including drafts, where applicable) are due on the dates specified in the syllabus. Late papers will be penalized at 2.5% per day unless I have permitted an extension of the due date. Important: you are responsible for keeping a copy of all assignments you submit.

2 FIRST DRAFT DATE: In addition to your final drafts, complete preliminary drafts of Assignments 3, 4, and 5 must also be submitted through separate submission links. Again, submit only a single Word (.doc or.docx extension) file, titled to identify you as author. I will assess your draft for completeness, and forward it (via Sakai ) for comment (peer review) by another student and return (by that student) to you, also via Sakai . I will assign you an editing partner, to which you must edit and return the assignment to your partner and me on the following Wednesday. Drafts are always due Fridays. Attendance/Participation (Please note posting requirements) Obviously we do not meet formally as a class in a Distance Studies course. Therefore attendance and participation on the Discussion Board are intertwined. While Distance Studies classes are generally asynchronous, they are not correspondence or self-paced. You must attend class (defined as logging into our Sakai section) and participate by introducing yourself, and posting questions and thoughts during the first week, and by posting (by participating in a given week s set discussion topic) on at least three separate days in subsequent weeks as indicated on this syllabus. This means at least three separate posts per week (a week is defined as running from Monday to Sunday), at least one of which must be a new post. Extended absences, defined as a failure to post into the Sakai classroom for more than five consecutive days, must be coordinated with the instructor. Postings on the Discussion Board must have the following characteristics: Must contribute something meaningful to the Board; Must support your opinion with sufficient reasons or evidence; Must display good grammar and organization. Postings should not: Contain disrespectful, insulting, or offensive language; Be excessively long or excessively short; Be unrelated to the week s topic; Say things that do not contribute anything, e.g. I agree with you or nice comment. I will track your postings to the discussion Board on a weekly basis and assess each week s contribution on a 10-point scale, ultimately arriving at a cumulative grade out of 100 that will constitute your 10% Discussion Board Participation mark. Note that attendance as defined in this section is mandatory in this course. Failure to meet the minimum posting requirements for three weeks may result in your final grade in the course being reduced by 10%. Failure to meet the minimum posting requirements for four or more weeks will result in a failing grade for the course. Medical Accommodation Policy For UWO Policy on Accommodation For Medical Illness, see: (downloadable Student Medical Certificate (SMC): under the Medical Documentation heading) Students seeking academic accommodation on medical or other grounds for any missed tests, exams, participation components and/or assignments worth 10% or more of their final grade must apply to the Academic Counselling office of their home Faculty and provide documentation. Academic accommodation on medical grounds cannot be granted by the instructor or the Program in Writing, Rhetoric, and Professional Communication, and the Program requires students in these circumstances to follow the same procedure when seeking academic accommodation on non-medical (i.e. non-medical compassionate or other) grounds. Students seeking academic accommodation on medical grounds for any missed tests, exams, participation components and/or assignments worth less than 10% of their final grade must also apply to the Academic Counselling office of their home Faculty and provide documentation. Where in these circumstances the accommodation is being sought on non-medical grounds, students should consult in the first instance with their

3 instructor, who may elect to make a decision on the request directly, or refer the student to the Academic Counselling office of their home Faculty. Students should also note that individual instructors are not permitted to receive medical documentation directly from a student, whether in support of an application for accommodation on medical grounds, or for other reasons (e.g. to explain an absence from class which may result in a grade penalty under an Attendance policy in the course). Students who are in emotional/mental distress should refer to for a complete list of options about how to obtain help. Scholastic Offences Scholastic Offences are taken seriously and students are directed to read the appropriate policy, specifically, the definition of what constitutes a Scholastic Offence, at the following Web site: Students must write their essays and assignments in their own words. Whenever students take an idea, or a passage of text from another author, they must acknowledge their debt

4 both by using quotation marks where appropriate and by proper referencing such as footnotes or citations. Plagiarism is a major academic offence (see Scholastic Offence Policy as above). Plagiarized work will receive an F (ranging from 0 to 49) and may result in failure in the course as a whole.. All required papers may be subject to submission for textual similarity review to the commercial plagiarism detection software under license to the University for the detection of plagiarism. All papers submitted for such checking will be included as source documents in the reference database for the purpose of detecting plagiarism of papers subsequently submitted to the system. Use of the service is subject to the licensing agreement currently between The University of Western Ontario and Turnitin.com ( Please note that the above required statements do not rule out additional cautions by the instructor. Above all, every instance of egregious plagiarism "with intent to deceive" must be reported to the Writing Program Office, in order to determine the penalty with the authority of the Director of the Writing Program, and to check for previous offences. A second offence will result in more serious penalties at the Dean's level. *Some instructors use the "Turnitin" program, available through Weldon Library and WebCT, for on-line checks; others simply use the Google search engine. PREREQUISITES: The University Senate requires the following statement to appear on course outlines: Students are responsible for ensuring that their selection of courses is appropriate and accurately recorded and that all course prerequisites have been successfully completed, and that they are aware of any antirequisite course(s) that they have taken. If the student does not have the requisites for a course, the University reserves the right to remove the student from the course and to delete it from the student's record. This decision may not be appealed. A student will receive no adjustment to his or her fees in the event that he or she is dropped from a course for failing to have the necessary prerequisites. Writing for Publication 2203 Weekly Outline Lecture/week one: Discover magazine styles and choose a magazine group. Learn about the five major differences between journalism and academic writing. Discussion: Considering either Vanity Fair or Chatelaine, what impressions do you have of the writing style? What makes its tone and style different from academic writing? What magazines do you read and why? Reading: Choose either Vanity Fair or Chatelaine. Flip through the magazine online and answer the questions in this week s discussion. Lecture/week two: learn to write leads to a variety of story styles; using quotes Discussion: post a news or magazine lead dissect. Why does it pull you into the story and does it match what the story is about? Find a fresh quote. Ask your fellow students why it's compelling or not. Comment on each other`s rewrites: does the lead include enough details? Is there emotion and/or opinion in the story?

Discussion: Start thinking about what you would like to write for a feature. It takes some time to develop a good idea so let s start now. In three sentences, write your idea. Discussion: for the following story title, find five possible sources and explain their relevance to the story: is it factual information, colour and description, etc... Why or why not? (provide example) Reading: 21 Rules for Writing Stellar Query Letters (pdf File) Lecture/week nine: Feature writing Discussion: Update the class on the progress you ve made on your feature. Are you running into challenges getting it done? Post possible solutions to your challenge or that of a classmate. Reading: See sample feature articles posted for this week as well as the link to the following story. Lecture/week ten: markets online and learning to write for the internet Discussion: find two web sites that accept freelance writing. What type of stories do they accept? Do not include writer's guideline details; rather, include your opinion of the tone and style, length and details Reading: Lecture/week eleven: freelancers tool box and headlines

6 Discussion: Do you think your feature could be sold to a publication outside of this class? What publications do you have in mind and how do you plan to go about getting an editor s attention for it? Reading: writers web sites in powerpoint Lecture/week twelve: online ethics and copyright Discussion: Read the posted ethical situation you might find yourself in as a writer and decide what you would do in this scenario. In light of what you ve learned about copyright this week, do you feel any differently about downloading various materials without paying for them?
