2 Suzanne Oliver Business Analysis Certificate In my role as IT project manager, I have seen an increase in customer demand for more in-depth business analysis work, and I felt I needed more formal training this area. The UD Business Analysis Certificate provided me with the tools and techniques I needed to add structure to the entire business analysis process. The course also followed the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) standards, which helped me prepare for and pass the IIBA Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) certification. When I started the certificate program, my goal was to learn more about the field of business analysis. However, the instructor probably one of the best I have ever had provided encouragement, guidance and support toward gaining certification. His knowledge of business analysis, combined with his ability to promote teamwork, provide guidance and support, and add an element of humor, helped me get through this challenging course. I believe there is a growing demand for the business analysis skill set, and the CBAP certification helped to solidify my career in this field. This is my second continuing education course at UD. A couple of years ago I completed the Project Management Certificate course, which I would also highly recommend. The instructors, coursework and location are excellent! 7 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 5 Return to college, boost your career You may have decided you need to add a credential to your resume, or you might be thinking of a college degree to boost your career. The research would back you up. Statistics show that earnings consistently increase with level of education. On average, workers over 25 years old with bachelor's degrees earn an astonishing 70% more than their counterparts with high school diplomas. Presidential initiatives underscore the importance of higher education for individuals to succeed and compete. As emphasized in White House statements on education, Earning a postsecondary degree or credential is no longer just a pathway to opportunity for a talented few; rather, it is a prerequisite for the growing jobs of the new economy. For many individuals, completing a college degree they may have started earlier in life is an option well worth pursuing, and education researchers project dramatic growth in the number of individuals enrolling in college after the age of 25. In addition, people are turning to certificate programs to boost their earnings, add competencies to their resume and improve their career prospects. Professional development certificate programs also provide an excellent way to earn a credential or retool for a job change. Certificates are a homegrown American invention and are expanding rapidly in response to a wide range of educational and labor market demands, reported researchers at Georgetown University, further noting that the post-secondary certificate has become a cost-effective tool for increasing educational attainment and gainful employment in the U.S. If it's been a while since you were in school, you may be wondering if college is still right for you. 11 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 9 Olivia Gatewood Project Management Certificate I have learned over the years that knowledge is not power: the application of knowledge is truly where the power lies. I pursued the Project Management Certificate because many of my job functions aligned to the role of a project manager, and I wanted to gain project management tools to apply immediately in my current role. I have also taken numerous career assessments that all pointed me in the career field of project management. UD s Project Management Certificate provided convenience for me. The location is relatively close to my home and even closer to my work campus. I also enjoyed the fact that the classes are smaller and the instructors have the expertise in the field. It was important for me to earn the Project Management Professional (PMP) credential. It was a goal I set for myself, that I m elated to have accomplished. Olivia Gatewood is a project manager and a senior associate on the control officer team at JPMorgan Chase & Co. She completed the University of Delaware s Project Management Certificate and subsequently pursued and achieved the Project Management Institute s PMP (Project Management Professional) credential.

12 10 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Joshua S. Rudley Social Media Marketing Strategy Certificate As a marketing professional I know the impact that social media can have on an organization s success. I use social media to help market our nonprofit community center, and knew that obtaining UD s Social Media Marketing Strategy Certificate would enhance my knowledge and skills to have a greater impact on my organization and give myself the credibility to be trusted in managing all of the social media accounts and strategies throughout my organization. Partnering with a real business client as part of a diverse team of fellow students was a highlight of the program. We were able to learn by doing, and see the live results of our team s positive impact. Working with Girls On the Run for our class project, I had the opportunity to attend a Girls on the Run 5K event and lead my team of social marketers in the field as we snapped, tweeted, posted, and hashtagged our way to success. One of the program s best features was its instructors, top social media marketing professionals that live and breathe the material they teach. We were able to learn through their personal experiences, how to think and act like industry leaders. Joshua S. 19 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 17 Telehealth gains momentum in Delaware The advancements and continued development of medical and communications technology have had a profound impact on the practice of medicine and offer opportunities for improving the delivery and accessibility of health care in and across the many professions responsible for the wellbeing of Delawareans. Delaware is well-positioned to embrace efforts that will encourage health insurers and health care providers to support the use of telemedicine. Delaware House Bill No. 69 relating to telemedicine services An important milestone for telehealth initiatives in Delaware was reached with a new law requiring insurers to cover health care services delivered via telemedicine, making Delaware the 29th state to take this stance. The Telehealth in Delaware Conference was subsequently held last fall, bringing together state, regional and national experts to discuss the challenges and opportunities for telehealth initiatives in Delaware and the region. Offered through a partnership between Delaware Health and Social Services (DHSS), the Delaware Telehealth Coalition and the University of Delaware s Division of Professional and Continuing Studies, the conference explored telehealth s applicability to a wide variety of health care settings and specialties, including emergency care, psychiatric services, rural health care, occupational therapy, chronic disease care, dental care, aging in place, speech therapy and mental health services. Building on that momentum, the University of Delaware s new Advanced Telehealth Coordinator Certificate program is being launched in Fall 2016, aimed at professionals who wish to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to support and expand the use of telehealth applications within their health care organizations, and prepare for the continued growth of telehealth in Delaware and the region.
