Flood Management

Introduction This Quick Guide was prepared in an effort towards supplying valuable information in the event that your property is affected by a flood. Flood prone communities adopt ordinances and building codes that detail the rules and requirements for floodplain development. The City of Riverdale has developed an ordinances that adopt these principles and attempt to employ a pro-active approach towards reducing the damaging effects if this type of natural disaster occurs. This ordinance can be secured by viewing the City s [www.riverdalega.gov] gov] and by utilizing the Muni-Code web link which appears in the Government section of the City s website. The actual web link is entitled Chapter 38 Floods and appears as follows: [http://www.municode.com/resources/gateway.asp?pid com/resources/gateway asp?pid=11472&sid=10] 10]

Introduction In an addition, the City of Riverdale along with Clayton County Water Authority is enrolled in the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency s (FEMA) Flood Mitigation Program. Through this program the following services are available: Flood Plain Management Flood Hazard Mapping Flood Plain Insurance

Flood Plain Management Floodplain Management is the operation of a community program of corrective and preventative measures for reducing flood damage. These measures take a variety of forms and generally include requirements for zoning, subdivision i i or building, and special-purpose floodplain ordinances. A community's agreement to adopt and enforce floodplain management ordinances, y g g particularly with respect to new construction, is an important element in making flood insurance available to home and business owners. Currently over 20,100 communities voluntarily adopt and enforce local floodplain management ordinances that provide flood loss reduction building standards for new and existing development.

Flood Hazard Mapping The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency s (FEMA) maintains a division within the Agency devoted to all mapping functions which is related to flood activity Flood Plain information and mapping activities are frequently updated for the purposes of supplying the most current and accurate information. To view additional information regarding this topic, please utilize the following website: [http://www.fema.gov/plan/prevent/fhm/wn_main.shtm]

Flood Plain Insurance Flood insurance is designed to provide an alternative to disaster assistance to reduce the escalating costs of repairing damage to buildings and their contents caused by floods. Flood insurance is available to homeowners, renters, condo owners/renters, and commercial owners/renters. Costs vary depending on how much insurance is purchased, what it covers, and the property's flood risk. All policy forms provide coverage for buildings and contents. However, you might want to discuss insuring personal property with your agent, since contents coverage is optional. Typically, there's a 30-day waiting period from date of purchase before your policy goes into effect. A Flood Insurance policy can be purchased via an insurance agent or broker or through FEMA itself,. The website address is [http://www.floodsmart.gov/floodsmart/pages/residential_coverage/rc_overview.jsp]

Helpful Hints

If you possess flood insurance 1. Document the damage in written and pictorial form. 2. Contact and coordinate with your insurance agent to secure the services of a restoration ti service as soon as possible. Dry cleaning and decontamination ti activities iti are highly advisable. 3. If you utilize a septic tank, contact your insurance agent to ascertain whether or not your existing insurance policy covers repair expenses. 4. When selecting a repair contractor, seek multiple bids, contact the Better Business Bureau and check references where possible. Most importantly, select a contractor that possesses experience in water related home repairs.

If you do not possess flood insurance 1. Contact and contract the services of a reputable contractor, contact the Better Business Bureau and check other references where possible. Most importantly, select a contractor that possesses experience in water related home repairs 2. Discard anything wet. Remember these materials hold not only water, they also hold bacteria, fungus and mold. This is especially true of carpet and padding. 3. Get as much air into the house as soon as possible. Open widows. Use fans and dehumidifiers. Do Not use air-conditioning devices. 4. Speak to your home insurance agent to ascertain whether or not any provisions exists within your current insurance policy and whether or not the federal government will offer grants. For additional insurance information visit the following website: [www.glls.org].

Helpful Hints 1. Listen for news reports to learn whether the community s water supply is safe to drink. 2. Avoid floodwaters; water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines. 3. Be aware of areas where floodwaters have receded. Roads may have weakened and could collapse under the weight of a car. 4. Beware of hazards when entering and cleaning up your home. 5. Watch for snakes and other animals forced into your home.

Helpful Hints 6. Use flashlights and not candles or lanterns as an interior light source. 7. Use protective clothing, and cover up as much of your body parts as possible. 8. Throw away all food and can good items. 9. Clean and disinfect everything that got wet. Mud left from floodwater can contain sewage and chemicals.
