Page 2 Meet Our New Students Elizabeth Ritterbush I am from New Orleans, Louisiana and I received my B.A. in Psychology at Southeastern Louisiana University in I later went on to complete my M.A. with an Industrial/Organizational concentration at Southeastern Louisiana University in During that time, my primary research focus was on organizational structure and performance in health care. While I am still interested in organizational structure and performance, my current research at Auburn has evolved under the tutelage of Dr. Franco-Watkins to focus on personality and decision making. Sadie O Neill I grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and received an A.A. from the University of Florida, a B.A. in Psychology from Columbus State University, and a M.A. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of West Florida. My thesis was on Work-Life Balance Psychological Capital. I'm now working with Dr. Michel in the WLOE lab, and my research interests include positive organizational psychology and worklife balance. From Left: Sadie O Neill, Anna Lorys, Hairong Li, and Elizabeth Ritterbush Hairong Li I am from China, and received my B.A. in sociology and B.S. in psychology from Peking University. I was inspired to pursue a PhD in psychology in the U.S. Currently, I m a first year doctoral student supervised by Dr. Jinyan Fan. One of my research interests is organizational socialization. I also conduct research in positive organizational psychology. Last but not least, I m happy that I chose Auburn. The faculty and graduate students here are all warm-hearted and supportive! Anna Lorys I am from Atlanta, GA, and I graduated from the University of Georgia with a B. S. in Psychology. During my time there, I had time to work in multiple I/O labs and further my interest in this field. I am now working in the WLOE lab with Dr. Michel as a first-year doctoral student. I am interested in studying work-life balance and individual differences in roles within work and life.

Page 3 Peter Chen continues serving as Psychology Department Head, Editor for the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, and Associate Editor of Journal of Organizational Effectiveness: People and Performance. Peter collaborates with I/O faculty for the following initiatives. First, I/O faculty has overhauled I/O curriculum. The updated curriculum offers a broad range of core courses based on the SIOP doctoral training guideline. A second major line of effort is to develop an accelerated Bachelor and Master Program (ABM), majoring in I/O psychology. This program will allow students to apply as undergraduates in their junior year, then spend their senior year plus one additional year attending master-level classes. Upon completion of the program, students will receive a B.S. and M.S. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. The program is on track to begin accepting applications in 2017, pending on an approval. The third initiative is to update General Doctoral Exam tailored for I/O Psychology, which will be effective in Fall of Peter s lab is in the virtual field, and his current research focuses on the following grants conducted in Australia and Taiwan , Developing a Workplace Bullying Risk Audit Tool. 4 Page 4 Dr. Dan Svyantek SCHLEP Lab Systems, CHaos, LEadership, and Performance. Dan and his crew continues to push the limits of social science through innovative research, and provocative theory. 2015/2016 saw considerable turnover in Dan s Lab. Brandon Johnson successfully defended his dissertation in the fall of 2015 and accepted a human resources job with Tesla Motors in California. Alexa Doerr accepted a researcher position with the Society for Human Resource Management as she completes her dissertation on workplace safety. Consequently, Dan only had Yuan Yuan and Drew Bond for much of the year. Yuan is preparing for her General Doctoral Exams and continues to pursue interests in quantitative methods. Drew will defend his thesis on Emotional Intelligence in Military Leaders in Spring 2016 prior to his departure for a teaching assignment at the United States Military Academy, West Point. His study sought to explore differences between pre-career and mid-career military leaders using the Petrides and Furnham model of Trait Emotional Intelligence. Upcoming SCHLEP Lab projects include book chapters on academic bundling, nonselection bias, and autism in the workplace. Dan was also recently chosen as chair-elect of the Auburn University Senate. He is interested in social cognition and now focusing on his dissertation in decision making.

Page 6 Work-Life and Organizational Effectiveness Lab Insert picture here In addition to the growth seen in the lab and the commencement of new projects, Paige successfully proposed her thesis and began data collection on her newlydeveloped scale of work-life conflict. Additionally, there has been extensive work on two metaanalyses on challenge and hindrance stressors and work-life enrichment in the lab. Further information on the lab may be found at our website: jmichel/. April 2015 to 2016 was a year of growth for the WLOE lab with the addition of two new graduate students. Both Anna Lorys and Sadie O Neill joined the lab in the Fall of 2015 and have eagerly begun work on various projects within the lab. While Anna began work on her thesis concerning a scale development of work-life balance, Sadie began to conduct focus groups on barriers between multiple roles in the experience of professors, which will become a training program on work-life balance. Liz completed her masters at Southeastern Louisiana University, and successfully defended her thesis while completing her first semester in the I/O doctoral program. Liz is currently working on a personality and ethical decision making study and applied for a Deep South grant to study safety decision making in firefighters. LIDS CaBS 4 th graduate students Matt Davis and Marc Jackson study health-related decision making and they will complete their doctoral work this May and August, respectively. Matt is pursuing an academic career and Marc is pursuing an applied career while completing his work at the Army Research Institute at Fort Benning. Liz and Matt have assisted with the Air Force contract on Ethical Decision Making in Human-Computer system interactions. Tim Kroecker from the Air Force Research lab in Rome, NY and colleagues visited Auburn in support of this project. We are excited to continue this work with our collaboration in Computer Science, Levent Yilmaz, as we proceed to develop an ethical advisor software for human decision makers. Dr. Franco-Watkins will be part of symposium on working memory and decision making performance at SIOP this year. We look forward to have new members in the lab soon and continue to research decision making applications, especially for workplace and organizations.

Page 11 Alumni Spotlight: Kristin Cullen Tell us a little about yourself. What is your current position and what type of work are you doing? I am a Senior Research Scientist at the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL). I work in Research, Innovation, and Product Development. I m leading CCL s R&D efforts to use networks to better understand leadership and to enhance leadership development. In April, a special issue of the Leadership Quarterly on Collective and Network Approaches to Leadership that I guest edited will be released. In addition to conducting original research and publishing in academic journals, my work focuses on translating those insights into publications for practicing leaders and HR professionals, and developing leadership solutions that help improve organizational leadership capacity and organizational performance. What do you enjoy most about your work? I really love doing research ever since graduate school, and it s what I like most about my job. In my job I have many opportunities to work directly with the leaders and employees of many amazing organizations and these interactions help me to generate novel and practically useful research questions, which is critical for seeing what I m learning translated into practice. How would you describe your transition from graduate school to the real world?" My transition from graduate school to the real world was pretty smooth. In my time at Auburn I had the opportunity to work on several research grants and conduct independent research, so I was wellprepared for my new role. I had to get used to many, many meetings, a regular 8 to 5 schedule, and professional attire every day. However, I m currently working as a telecommuter so I do enjoy wearing my jeans most days like I did in grad school. What do you wish you had known before graduating from Auburn? What advice do you have for current I/O students? In graduate school I had many varied opportunities and I said yes to just about everything. It s important to have a breadth of experience and to find an area that you re passionate about. So try lots of different things and look for what you re passionate about. When you do, dig into it deeply. What I didn t expect is that while it is important to have broad competence, you also have to have a clear identity and focus to your work. Finding that will help others better understand the value you provide and will help you remain invested in your work. What is your favorite Auburn memory? I have many wonderful memories from my time at Auburn including playing PSYGO flag football, attending SIOP conferences and Auburn football games. But as sappy as it may seem my best memory is meeting my future husband. What can I say, he had me at War Eagle! Auburn Alums at Kristin and Houston s wedding

Page 12 Alumni Spotlight: Chris Winkelspecht Tell us a little about yourself. What is your current position and what type of work are you doing? My employer, Maritz, is a 125 year-old, still family-owned business. Originally a jeweler, the Maritz company owned one of the greatest inventories of watches in the US when the Great Depression struck. An innovative leader at the time oversaw the transformation of the company from B2C vendor to a B2B provider selling watches to large companies in bulk, at discount of course, to share as rewards for service anniversaries. This was the beginning of the employee recognition industry. Today, I oversee the strategic services the company wraps around their recognition and engagement platform. What do you enjoy most about your work? The service line I oversee is quite diverse - ranging from survey design and analysis, behavior modification interventions, change management, leadership & organization development strategy and tactics as well as a host of core business functions (budgeting, forecasting, market trend analysis, etc.). These activities call upon ALL of the skills and training I obtained in grad school. How would you describe your transition from graduate school to the real world?" In a few words a great adventure! I was married in June of 2006, moved to a new city and left my job at AUM s Center for Business in August of the same of year (I moved out of state and could no longer remain an employee of the University). I was confident in my employability and open to opportunities but didn t have one lined up. I wound up spending the first year doing contract work (before it was cool ; ) and then settling in a job I thought was a fit. It wasn t. It took me six months to realize the job wasn t what I thought it would be and another six months to find one I was confident would be. I learned a ton those first couple years in the real world and wouldn t change a thing. Having a goals and plans to achieve them are obviously great success factors but for some, like me, investing time to get a feel for your new world and where you best fit is a helpful step before setting and pursuing goals. What do you wish you had known before graduating from Auburn? The importance of effectively communicating YOUR ideas. The Scientist/Practitioner model needs to be a balance. You need to develop presentation skills through practice to be effective on the Practitioner side. What is your favorite Auburn memory? The first time I saw my wife! My good friend Scott Wheeler hosted a Tailgating Training party for new Psychology Ph.D. students the weekend before classes began. Cami was sitting out back in a folding chair I struck up a conversation we hit it off and I asked her to join my friends and me who were planning to see a band that evening. Everyone bailed and so Cami and I wound up going on our first date. Fourteen years later we re about to celebrate our ten year anniversary. What else would be interesting for your fellow alums to hear about? Since I moved to Auburn in 2000, I ve seen the Tigers play a live game every year. The streak was set to end in 2013 as my son was born on October 14th. A week before the last game of the season, Cami surprised me with a ticket and trip to see the Iron Bowl. Instead of breaking my streak I was there for the Kick Six! My in-laws live in Auburn and so I m fortunate to continue the tradition of attending a game each season. I m blessed in many ways and having the opportunity to keep connected to Auburn is one I value greatly.
