1 THE HOSPITAL The Rivendell Young Persons Unit at the Priory Hospital Altrincham Individual care Innovative services Positive outcomes
2 About the Rivendell Unit Our specialist team of clinicians work with young people to provide individually tailored care programmes, which address the physical symptoms of the eating disorder as well as any related psychological issues which may have contributed to its onset. We use creative and expressive approaches that enable the young person to overcome their illness and lead a happy, fulfilled life that is built on a healthy attitude towards food. Who do we treat? Our multidisciplinary team provide treatment for any young person aged up to 18 years of age with a diagnosed eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder, as well as those with an unspecified or atypical eating disorder. We also accept patients who have been detained under the Mental Health Act (1983) who may require naso-gastric feeding and monitoring. About our treatment programmes Our multidisciplinary service provides oneto-one and group therapies for the young person in addition to a comprehensive range of creative and educational groups which address key psychological issues such as body image and self esteem. Seamless transition between higher and lower dependency treatments offer the young person the best opportunity to achieve their treatment outcomes with the assurance of greater levels of care and support when needed. We work in close collaboration with the referring clinician or commissioner, as well as families and schools, to guarantee a transparent process and early visibility of the young person s progression throughout each treatment phase.
3 Care and support at every step of the way We know how important it is for every young person to receive a holistic approach to their wellbeing. Our specialist teams work with the young person, their family or carer and their referring GP or commissioner to develop a Care Programme Approach (CPA). This ensures treatment objectives are regularly agreed and reviewed, right from admission to the return home and recovery period beyond. Outreach support service Environment Set within extensive grounds and woodland, Rivendell Unit, is able to care for 14 young people within its dedicated, open inpatient adolescent ward that forms part of the Priory Hospital Altrincham. The safety and wellbeing of every patient is our utmost priority, and our specialist clinical teams work hard to provide a relaxed and homely environment for young people so that they can pursue as many of their normal hobbies and interests as possible whilst undergoing treatment. In addition to therapeutic gardens, kitchen facilities and relaxation programmes, we work with the young person s school or college to provide a comprehensive educational programme with accredited onsite assessment facilities. This enables the young person to continue with their academic studies as seamlessly as possible. To ensure the young person is able to successfully reintegrate into family and social life, our eating disorder nurses and therapists work with the young person and their family to provide a dedicated outreach support service. The service addresses areas of acute difficulty such as supervised family meals or food shopping, and aims to encourage independence and confidence for the young person. Specialist treatment programmes Intensive outpatient programme Every programme also includes: This 12 week programme offers a structured and holistic approach to treatment for young people aged up to 18 who may have: Physical monitoring, for example weight, bloods, physical observations and height A supported meal and snack recently developed an eating disorder One-to-one or group work with a dietician rapidly declining eating behaviours One-to-one nursing review failed to achieve continued weight gain in the community Therapy groups shown signs of relapsing in their condition Family feedback The programme consists of three pathways, with varying levels of medical, nursing and therapy treatment to reflect the requirements of each young person. Pathway 1 Day care once a week One-to-one and group family therapy Risk assessment Weekly ward round review Six-weekly Care Programme Approach (CPA) review The young people who have had inpatient care may step down to the intensive outpatient programme where clinically indicated. Pathway 2 Day care once a week, plus outreach support Pathway 3 Day care twice a week, plus outreach support
4 Working in partnership with the NHS We are proud of our reputation as trusted partners of local health authorities across the country and work hard to develop transparent, structured pricing plans for referring commissioners. For more information on our eating disorder programmes, please contact the admissions team at the Priory Hospital Altrincham. Priory s outcomes: our patients success In order to ensure our patients receive the very best treatment throughout every stage of their care, we regularly monitor their physical and mental health condition using a range of outcome metrics1. These reflect an average length of stay that is well below the national average2. 95% of our younger patients rated the approachability of their Priory healthcare professional as good, very good or excellent Every member of staff who I came into contact with individually gave me huge support during my stay % improve their attitude to diet, shape and weight 84% have improved mental wellbeing Whilst I accepted the Eating Disorders Unit boundaries, I felt very much treated as an individual Based on the Priory Group outcome data and patient satisfaction results, 2010/11 Eating Disorders in the UK: service distribution, service development and training CR170 (CR87 revised) 2012 Payment options: getting the right help when you need it most Choosing to self-fund treatment Our patients have the convenience of being able to book appointments at a time to suit them, with the assurance that our specialist clinical teams will be able to deliver the right care with the best possible outcomes. Patients usually need a GP referral prior to commencing treatment, and will be assessed by a consultant psychiatrist to determine the best treatment plan. Using private medical insurance Patients with private medical insurance will be assured to know that the Priory Group are registered and approved providers for all of the UK s leading private medical insurance schemes. Patients must obtain a GP referral before undergoing treatment at any Priory hospital and are requested to provide their insurance policy details at the time of booking their initial consultation so that pre-authorisation can be agreed with the insurance provider. Different policies cover different levels of care, so for any queries, it is advised that patients and enquirers contact their insurer.
