1 MBA in Nonprofit Management M A N A G E MENT 405 Thursdays 4:00 6:30 PM F A L L 2009 SEME S T E R CL A S S SY L L A B U S Instructor: Mike Hoff is currently President of his own company specializing exclusively in consultation to nonprofits. He is the former Director of Consulting and Training Services at the Center for Nonprofit Management, and has served as the Executive Director of two nonprofit organizations. Mike has also managed Organization and Management Development functions within three Fortune 500 companies and his expertise includes board and staff development, strategic planning, change management, team development and performance evaluation. He was a member of the faculty at California State University, Long Beach for five years and is a past member of the extension faculty at the University of California, Irvine. Course Description: The course is designed to examine strategic planning as a tool for organizational change, sustainability, and growth. The student will be exposed to methods of organizational assessment, strategic planning and program evaluation. Students will gain an understanding of the practical applications undertaken in the strategic planning process. Methodology will include development of a SWOT analysis, identification of strategic issues, and formation of a situational analysis. The course examines goals-based planning, the most common method of strategic planning. A second part of the course will focus on program evaluation and students will develop a deeper understanding of the planning and implementation facets of program evaluation.
