Teaching and learning Literacies and Key Competencies Reading and interpreting print was the appropriate mode of literacy for an age in which the primary source of information was books and print media, whilst critical multimedia literacy entails reading and interpreting a plethora of discourse, images, spectacle, narratives and the forms and genres of global media culture. Kahn and Kellner Reconstructing techno-literacy in Defining Technological Literacy, ed John Dakers, 2006 The New Zealand Curriculum Key Competencies 3
Learning materials and resources Digital Learning Objects hundreds of learning objects and digital resources for students part of The Federation initiative LeadSpace a dedicated website for shoo leaders supporting admin, management and professional development TKI (Te Kete Ipurangi and associated websites) quality assured educational material via a bilingual website Learning materials and resources 2 Electronic Storybooks high-interest electronic storybooks for students who are not proficient readers, with notes for teachers e-asttle (assessment tools for teaching and learning) a CD-based tool for teachers to assess literacy and numeracy referenced to the national curriculum Software for Learning access to information and advice about a range of software for teachers and school leaders 4
Infrastructure for learning Digital Opportunities supporting school use of ICTs through partnerships between govt, schools, businesses and communities School Network Infrastructure development of infrastructure standards, network upgrade programmes and broadband connectivity Managed Internet Services subsidised internet service solutions to help schools protect their systems ICT Helpdesk for Schools free-phone, independent ICT advice and technical support Infrastructure for learning 2 Laptops for Principals and Teachers laptops on lease to eligible teachers and principals e-admin help with decisions about student management systems and other admin software Software Agreements covering a range of Microsoft, Apple, Novell and other software at no cost to schools 5
Infrastructure for learning 2 Learning Power Recycled Computers access to low-cost, warranted, computers via the Computer Access NZ Trust Computers in Homes access for students in selected communities through a 2020 Trust initiative Virtual Learning Network Infrastructure access to a bridge for quality video/audio conferencing Infrastructure for learning Virtual Learning Network NCEA Level 1-3, 163 classes, 1200 students, enrolled in programmes currently offered via video conference by NZ educators in/by schools, polytechnics & universities 6
Infrastructure for learning Virtual Learning Network e-mentoring Music The change in their confidence, technique and general willingness to try new things was a huge transformation from week one. One of the fantastic outcomes from this is that Amuri are now going to start a school choir and these students will be the driving force behind it. This is a great outcome for the project. I think this woodwind trial has sent a strong message out that in the future no child in a rural NZ school that is connected by video conferencing should miss out on the opportunity to learn to play. This I feel has enormous bearings on the teaching of instrumental teaching in NZ. 7
21st Century Education integrates technologies engaging students in ways not previously possible, creating new learning and teaching possibilities, enhancing achievement and extending interactions with local and global communities The only way to predict the future is to build it Douglas Adams 8
