There are helpful descriptions of what each job entails and any qualifications you might need. 8 Use Kudos Kudos is a career matching software program to find out what jobs your skills and interests are best suited to. Kudos may be available through your school, college or training provider. It is also available in some and Connexions centres. Get some relevant work experience Improve your prospects through school work experience, a Saturday or holiday job or by taking on some voluntary work. Attend options events and open days Remember to ask what previous learners have gone on to do after finishing their course. 9 Apply right now Your step-by-step guide to applying 4 Come for an interview When we receive your application, we ll write inviting you for an interview. For some arts-based courses, this may include an audition. In most cases, you ll also take an online screening assessment of your maths and English skills to confirm you ve selected the right course. Decide on your career pathway 1 Research your options. Check out Career Coach on our website. Attend an information evening, open day or taster. Still unsure? Contact Learner Services on for advice and guidance. Accept your offer 5 of a place Once you ve been interviewed, we ll write to let you know the outcome. If you ve been offered a place, it could be conditional on exam results such as GCSEs. Once you have a conditional offer, you will be enrolled at the College. You will need to get in touch with us to accept or confirm your offer. 2 Submit your application There s no deadline for applications but the sooner you apply online, the sooner you ll secure your place. Visit derbycollege.com to apply direct. Look up your course an application form is on every course page. If you have any problems submitting your form electronically, contact us straight away. If you are unable to apply online, visit Learner Services at any of our campuses who will help you complete your application form. 6 Attend our Welcome Day During August you will receive a welcome pack containing full details about your enrolment. On GCSE results day, we hold a special event to give you further advice based on your results. You will be invited to a Welcome Day at College in late August/early September. During Welcome Day, you will be introduced to the College by our Chief Executive and current learners, while finalising your course plans with teaching staff. Benefit from dedicated assistance 3 Once you ve applied, you ll be allocated a Learner Services representative. They will act as your dedicated adviser, ensuring your application is processed and your interview with the College is arranged. Become part of 7 the College You will complete the enrolment process and sign the Learner Agreement. The first two weeks of term are classed as an induction, including an introduction to your course. You ll receive a copy of the Learner Handbook, an ID card, a Derby College address, and access to our online learning space, Moodle and My Day. Taster days If you re in Year 11, you can book a place on one of our action-packed taster days. It s a chance to learn more about our courses and to enjoy some practical hands-on skills from working with farm animals to testing your navigation skills, from trying automotive circuitry to building a Scalextric car, from working with a hair stylist to sports skills drills. Roundhouse Johnson Building Motor Vehicle Studies Please note if you are interested in Motor Vehicle Studies, you will need to walk directly to the Johnson Building. This will be signposted. Parking When travelling to the Roundhouse campus, please use public transport where possible. Given its location, it has minimal parking facilities and visitors are advised to park elsewhere as we can only accommodate a small number of vehicles. At the time of this prospectus going to print, there is also a Pay and Display car park within a very short walking distance. 10

You will also receive training in CV writing and interview skills, and an awareness of what to expect in your first job. The aim is to ensure that you are 100% prepared for the world of work and understand how to behave, think and succeed in a work environment. 13 Employment and Skills Academies Our Employment and Skills Academies build bridges to help you make a smooth transition from education to employment. Underpinned by strong employer engagement, they enable you to take part in an enhanced programme of industry-specific activities which will prepare you for the world of work. Run in association with leading employers, the Academies offer you the chance of mentoring by industry experts, going behind-the-scenes on visits to local companies, hearing from specialist speakers, taking part in employer-led projects based on real-life scenarios, and undertaking internships and work experience. Looking for an apprenticeship? If you want the chance to earn while you learn, an apprenticeship could be the ideal choice. You ll receive on-the-job training, gain a respected qualification and prepare for a successful career. We can help you find an apprenticeship in a wide range of vocational areas. See our A-Z course guide starting on page 21 for full details of all the apprenticeships available in our different subject areas. We also offer an Apprenticeship Recruitment Service free of charge, which will match you with an employer who could potentially have a vacancy for you. 14 Apply Now derbycollege.com Skills for success Whatever career route you take, some skills will be invaluable throughout your working life such as communication, enterprise and leadership. All our courses help you develop these broader qualities which will serve you well in the future. Coaching for success Your personal coach will play a vital role in helping you make the most of your time in College. They will assist you in developing your personal and employability skills and make sure you are receiving any support you need. Part of their work is to deliver the weekly Coaching for Success programme. This will complement your course by focussing on your personal effectiveness, giving you time to reflect on your progress and helping you to plan your next steps. English and Maths No matter what subject you are studying, skills in English and maths are essential to help you progress in your learning, your employment and your everyday life. They will give you the confidence and ability to succeed no matter where life takes you in future. If you don t already have a grade C or above in GCSE English and Maths or equivalent qualifications you will continue studying these subjects as part of most courses at Derby College. Community action As part of your learning experience, you will regularly take part in rewarding initiatives which support the wellbeing of the wider community. Many of our course enrichment projects involve collaborations with local organisations, enabling you to gain meaningful practical experience while developing attributes in citizenship and teamwork. From creating tactile art for people with dementia to revamping local sports facilities, our learners show their commitment to community action. That s not forgetting the fundraising activities undertaken by our teams for vital causes such as Comic Relief and Wear it Pink Day. It all helps strengthen the College s role as a good neighbour. 14

15 National Citizen Service Derby College has been running National Citizen Service (NCS) since 2012, bringing together more than 1,000 Year 11 and 12 learners from different backgrounds to develop new skills and make a difference within their local communities. We have joined forces with other colleges, universities, businesses and community groups to run this programme, which concentrates on the personal and social development of young people giving them lifelong skills such as teamwork, leadership and budgeting. Working in a team, our participants have the chance to take part in challenging outdoor activities such as caving and abseiling, along with a residential experience at the University of Derby focussing on employability and understanding their community. They then design and deliver their own social action project to improve the community in which they live. Entrepreneurs at Derby College We deliver a range of activities at the College to help you develop entrepreneurial skills both for your own commercial business development or to support your community. During the academic year, you can access: Entrepreneur cafés where you can speak to current business and community leaders about their experiences Inspirational lectures from entrepreneurs Young Enterprise Workshops The 10 challenge, competitions and much more. Alongside all these exciting opportunities, you can also take part in our entrepreneurs lounge. But at Derby College there s always someone happy to give you support and advice. We have all the answers Here are some of the frequently asked questions from our new learners and their parents. Q Do you provide any support to learners when they are nearing the end of their programme? Q How do you help your learners keep on track so that they don t fall behind? Q How do you ensure your learners are on the right career pathway? A You ll receive information, advice and guidance throughout the recruitment journey to ensure you embark on the right pathway at the right time for you. You ll be allocated a personal coach who will keep an eye on your progress and support you all the way. If your circumstances change for any reason, you ll be able to agree an alternative learning programme with the help of your personal coach. A Yes, we provide a range of support to ensure your transition to the next stage of your life is smooth whether it s into a job or further study. As you come towards the end of your course, our dedicated careers team will give you advice about how to progress, covering everything from apprenticeships to university applications. Our REED NCFE service will also give you support in finding sustainable employment. A Your personal coach will agree an Individual Learning Plan with you, which will include targets and milestones. They will monitor your progress to ensure your learning stays on track. In addition, our team of intervention support officers can help you with targeted support to meet your specific needs. Q How do you help your learners prepare for the world of work? A We are very proud of our track record in equipping learners with the skills, confidence and attitude they need to hit the ground running in employment. We ensure that, wherever possible, our courses include valuable work experience, as well as instilling the behaviours and qualities that will make you ready to progress into work. Employers have told us that although qualifications and technical competence are important they place equal value on a raft of wider essential capabilities and attributes. These include literacy and numeracy, creativity, communication skills, teamwork, enterprise and environmental responsibility. You ll find that all these feature in your studies. 16
