The Lions finished 2015 with a 12-5 overall record and a 5-2 mark in Ivy League play, good for a second place finish. RIDER S STATUS The Broncs opened 2015 last weekend with a pair of shutout victories. Rider topped Lehigh, 3-0, before edging out Georgetown, 1-0. Carlie Spader has two of the team s four tallies while starting goalkeeper Joelle Prettyman has had to make just three stops in her pair of clean-sheets. UCONN S STATUS The defending National Champion and preseason No. 1 Huskies picked up right where they left off, topping Northwestern and Northeastern to kick off tehir season. UConn has now won 16 in a row, dating back to Charolotte Veitner has four goals already, while Nina Klein has stopped 10-of- 11 shots. SERIES HISTORY... RIDER Columbia and Rider have alternated wins and losses in their previous six meetings. The squads last met in 2012, with the Lions picking up a 3-2 win behind 10 saves from Kimberly Pianucci. A LOOK BACK... UCONN The Huskies took the only previous meeting between the schools, 4-0, in Storrs last September. UConn scored in the 10th minute and took a three-goal lead into the half to go on for the win. LIONS IN SEASON OPENERS Columbia improved to 10-9 in season openers after winning its 2014 debut, 3-1, against LaSalle. In home debuts, the Lions are 13-6, and have come away victorious in five-straight of their first contests at the Baker Athletics Complex. new era After spending three years as an assistant coach for Columbia, two-time Olympian Caroline Nichols was elevated to head coach in May. Nichols becomes just the fourth coach in program history. A pivotal piece of U.S. National Team s backfield, she totaled 165 impressive caps to her name in seven years on the squad. home sweet home Columbia will look to continue its home success from 2014 after posting an 8-1 record at the Baker Athletics Complex, which tied the program record for most home wins in a season. Columbia went a perfect 8-0 at home in 2007 and was 7-3 in th game As Columbia field hockey enters its 20th year, the Lions are eight games shy of their 300th contest. The landmark game is slated for October 3 at Cornell. DOHERTY EARNS TWO OSEASON HONORS Sophomore back Maeve Doherty kept busy this summer, playing at the Young Women s National Championship after strong performances at High Performance training sites and was named to the U.S. National Indoor Team for Doherty previously played for the National Indoor Squad last December, starting all four games in the 4-Nations Tournament in Canada. BATTLE TESTED The Lions schedule will be full of tough tests which includes three teams ranked in the preseason NHCA Poll. Columbia faces off against defending NCAA Champion and preseason No. 1 UConn in its opening weekend before No. 19 Michigan State comes to town on September 13. The Lions also take on No. 15 Princeton during Ivy League play. REIBOTT RETURNS Christina reibott returns for her senior campaign where she became just the second Lion to earn All-America honors and the first to become Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year. reibott was the national leader in assists per game (1.24), set single-season program records for points (41) and assists (21) and became Columbia s all-time leader in assists in just three seasons. RUESTER CROWS Junior forward Katie Ruesterholz has posted a pair of 10 goal seasons in her first two seasons with Columbia and her 20 tallies put her fifth on the all-time goal chart. She becomes the fourth coach in program history. We are thrilled to have Caroline Nichols as a coach and mentor for our field hockey studentathletes, Senior Associate Athletics Director/ Senior Women s Administrator Jacqueline Blackett said. Caroline s experience as a player at the national and international level, coupled with her ability to teach the game, makes her an excellent choice to lead our Columbia field hockey program. During her time as an assistant, Nichols worked with the Columbia backfield. The Lions defense has seen players such as Bridget DeSandis, Katie DeSandis and Lauren Skudalski earn All-Ivy League and All-Region honors. As a team, the Lions have ranked in the top-15 in defensive saves in each of Nichols three seasons with the program. I am thrilled for this opportunity to lead the Columbia ield Hockey program, Nichols said. I want to thank Director of Athletics Peter Pilling, Jackie Blackett, and the search committee for their support throughout this process. I am excited to continue to drive the standard of Columbia field hockey forward. With our returning players, incoming class, and alumnae support there is no limit to what we can achieve. Nichols wrapped up a brilliant seven-year international field hockey career in the summer of A pivotal piece of Team USA s backfield, Nichols compiled a total of 165 impressive caps to her name. A solid force on penalty corners and penalty strokes, her skillset was greatly utilized most recently at the 2014 Champions Challenge and Hockey World Cup where the United States made an impressive fourth place finish. Olympics team, the 2008 Olympic Qualifier team and the 2010 World Cup Qualifier Team. She earned a gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games when the U.S. defeated topranked Argentina in the Championship game. In 2006, she was named to the USA World Cup Training Squad and was a member of the Netherlands Tour team in She competed with the 2012 London Olympics team in June 2012 and was re-selected for the National Squad in June of Nichols, who was an assistant coach at Iowa in 2010, has worked with the USA ield Hockey utures program since She has been a certified site director and head coach since 2008 and the Regional Coaching Director for San Diego, Calif., since Nichols had an outstanding collegiate playing career at Old Dominion as a fouryear letterwinner from She was a national all-academic team selection and an all-conference honoree from As a junior, she was named a NHCA second team All-South Region selection and was named to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) all-tournament team. In 2006, Nichols was recognized as a NHCA first team All-American and an NHCA first team All-South Region honoree. Additionally, she was named the 2006 CAA Player of the Year and CAA Defender of the Year, marking the first time in CAA history someone swept both honors in the same season.
