4 FOOTBALL PROGRAM 13/16 & 16/25 years old T he program is very simple and consists of 3 points: PRACTICE, PRACTICE and PRACTICE There is no secret : if you work hard, you will progress more than if you work at only 60% capacity! Quite simply, we work on the fundamentals of the game over and over : tactics, learning how to play together, and also physical training our students must be in tip-top physical condition. Practice, physical and mental preparation are made for improving your game. Therefore, at the end of the day, you must play matches; that s why we offer our players to be part of the Dinnington / FM Sports United Football Club 2 hours per day from Monday to Friday 1/2h to 1h physical preparation per day 5 days a week Games on Wednesdays and Sundays Our students will be part of FM SPORTS UNITED Fundamentals, tactics, mental preparation, physical preparation according the age of our students, video analysis. 6 4 INTENSIVE FOOTBALL 16/25 years old UE players only ur fulltime football programme offers an intense football academy experience for O players, only from Europe (visa reason), who wish to concentrate on football intensively. For example: if they have already gained good educational qualifications, or, if they want a break from education to pursue their sporting goals, or, for other reasons like for to discover talented footballers, following a period of intensive coaching designed to improve every individual s game and showcase that talent to industry scouts, recruitment managers and Academy Managers and Coaches. The football programme we offer is a collaboration between our head coaches from FM Sports & Esprit as we share the same point of view and philosophy of the sport coaching. Tailored Approach It is not just about the amount of training, but it is about the right sort of training and the proper management of each player s development: that is the key. 7 FOOTBALL PROGRAM 14/21 years old 2 weeks in Barcelona included in our price during the 2 week Spring break There s nothing like being in the country to see how things work! We know that spending 2 weeks in Barcelona is an eye-opener as our players will have a better idea of the Spanish game (speed and lot of passes for instance) and a better grasp of Spain as well. The plane tickets and the 2 week camp in Barcelona is included in our price for the one year programme only. Holidays: The Year Long Football COLLEGE program is 34 weeks of accommodation, football training and academic study consisting of three academic terms with 4 holidays. During the holidays all services are suspended and students normally take the opportunity to return home for rest and recuperation except for Easter holiday where we bring them to Barcelona. Students who wish to stay in England during the break are required to put the request in writing and if the host family agrees to the wish an additional fee will be required for host family stay only. FOOTBALL CAMP 13/17 years old The best way to test our Football Academy Intensive Football: 5 Hours Football practice & Physical prep per day 5 days a week plus one match versus local team per fortnight. 9 OUR STAFF Rob Worthington Coach Former Mr Universe Six times Mr Britain 11 years experience in USA as a personal fitness trainer Club Director of Gold s Gym Atlanta Former competitive strongman Medical staff Steve Collins Academy Physiotherapist Steve is a fully qualified, State Registered Physiotherapist with the Health Professionals Council (HPC), and is a Member of the Federation of Holistic Sports Therapists. He also lectures part-time at a local College on sports massage and the treatment of sports injuries. Steve has considerable experience and expertise in professional and semiprofessional sport, most recently with the Middlesbrough FC Academy and previously with the England national football team for players with learning disabilities. O ur Academy has a permanent Physiotherapist in charge of our students. As football is a sport with obvious risks of injury, we have a competent medical staff in place to react with the appropriate people to resolve the problem of injury. Experience tells us to look after any injury however small, and we prefer to check with the professionals (physio, xray or scan) to make sure that we get to the bottom of every injury. At each of our Sunday s games, our team (FM United) has the opportunity to have an assistant Physiotherapist on the field. 8
10 Football + Academic English School GCSE at Birkdale School 14/16 years old irkdale is a typical private day-school with an atmosphere which we love : mix of B old-fashioned discipline (uniform) with a very modern and open-minded teaching approach. The sport spirit belongs to the philosophy of this school where the sports facilities in and out of the main campus are excellent. Our goals To pass the GCSE exams To improve the student s Football level. Curriculum A ll the boys follow a wide range of academically challenging subjects which extend well beyond the National Curriculum requirements. Intellectual curiosity is encouraged at all ages. Small class sizes at GCSE of 20 pupils maximum and in the Sixth Form of 15 pupils, ensure that each have the guidance and encouragement needed to help them achieve their personal best academically. Music is one of the best specialities of this school. We encourage pupils to take part in this programme because this is for us as important for the development of the pupils as the sport. The Football programme will be supervised by Phil Wymer. According to the age, footballers will practice either in the school or with the pupils of Hillsborough 9
11 Football + Academic English School: A Levels at Birkdale School 16/17 years old Our goals at Birkdale To succeed academically To give to each of the foreign students a real British experience To have the opportunity to get a scholarship to an American University depending on the level of football and schools results. Within the first 4 weeks of study, we may identify students who could follow a higher course of study and may be allowed to change programme. The A Level programme needs an important home work, therefore the number of sport sessions will be in proportion of the school level of each student (between one and three sessions per week) WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY A LEVELS? GO TO UNIVERSITY Three A levels ==> University I PASSED MY IELTS: 1. Secondary School Programme A LEVELS (15/18 years old) A-Levels are completed over two years. First year: AS Level, Second year : A2, with a national examination at the end of each year. Our College allows students (subject to their academic level) to follow A levels in main subjects like Maths, Biology, English language, Media Studies, Business Studies, PE (physical education), Media Studies, Psychology, History, Chemistry, Information Technology, Graphic Design. This is the most direct route for the University program. Our goal is that our students get a scholarship in an American University thanks to their football level and their school results. FM SPORTS COLLEGE helps you to get a SCHOLARSHIP to an American University Students are encouraged to take 3 subjects at A level. 12 Football + English Programme at Hillsborough College 16/21 years old The new building of Hillsborough college offers great facilities to our students : Light classrooms, extra large computer rooms and library, excellent cafeteria (very important for the moral and the preparation of our athletes!) ENGLISH COURSES ( EFL) GENERAL ENGLISH 20 hours per week T he best way to get the basics and start speaking English well enough to continue further study, and also to understand the football coach better! The English Department is accredited by the British Council which ensures a very high level of teaching. All skills are developed; speaking, listening, reading and writing. On arrival, students English level is tested using a placement test. The student is then placed into the appropriate class. The teachers use a communicative method of teaching which encourages students to use the language as much as possible. At the end of their course, students may have the opportunity to take either a Trinity examination or a Cambridge examination, depending on their period of study and their level of English. No required entry level all levels of English accepted. Students sit a placement test in English on arrival in order to determine which level they will follow. 20 hours per week 5 levels of English from beginner to advanced. Groups have an average of 15 students. The General English programme focuses on the four major language skills : Reading : To develop vocabulary, to understand syntax, to become familiar with phrasal verbs and grammatical patterns Writing : To develop written skills, and to work on correct spelling Listening : To become familiar with the sounds specific to the English language, and to become accustomed to different accents, to reduce the time between hearing the word and understanding the same word! Speaking : To work on pronunciation, fluidity and spontaneity of expression. A course book is provided each term by the College. We advise all students to arrive with a dictionary and a grammar reference book. Students have daily homework to complete and benefit from continuous assessment and advice from their teacher. The teacher will take the decision to move a student to a higher group as he progresses. IELTS preparation is available to students depending on their level. The IELTS is needed for students applying for Scholarship in American universities. The IELTS exam can be taken locally for an extra fee. 11
13 Football + English Programme at Hillsborough College 16/21 years old BTEC (level 1,2,3) SPORT COACHING or BUSINESS A BTEC qualification is another way to access the University program. The BTEC level 3 is considered the equivalent of an A level and accepted by universities. BTEC qualification has no exams, it is all coursework. The BTEC we offer is in Sport (see below). The BTEC (Business and Technology Educational Council) is a vocational diploma that covers : Technical and tactical skills in sport, body in action, training and fitness, fitness testing, sport and exercise, nutrition, health and safety, principles of coaching. The students have 1h30 of English tuition a day 5 days per week, and 3 hours session of BTEC preparation 4 days per week. The English exam is taken at the end of the academic year; the BTEC is continual assessment. WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY BTEC? BTEC Level 3 = one A Level Three A levels => University 1. For students from the ages of years, we can offer a 1 year programme combining the BTEC level 2 in sport with an ESOL diploma. (a recognized English qualification). Or the BTEC level 2 with a GCSE course. (Entry level : pre-intermediate English level with good written skills) 2. For students from the ages of years, according the academic level of the student we can offer a one or two year-programme combining the BTEC level 3 in sport with A levels. The BTEC level 3 award counts as one A level and the students choose one or two other A levels along with this. BTEC level A level allow entry to a 2 year Foundation Degree at College or University. BTEC level A levels allow for entry directly to university in the UK or America. 14 Football + Academic English School at Hillsborough College 18/21 years old International Foundation Diploma in BUSINESS. This is an excellent programme for our footballers whishing to optimise football & studies. You must have a good standard of English minimum Cambridge First Certificate or an IELTS score of 5.5 (in all parts), at least18 years of age. This is a one year Advanced level course that develops the knowledge and skills required to be successful in Business and higher education in the UK. You will study a wide range of business subjects and develop your study skills over the duration of the course. In addition you will have the opportunity to further improve your English reading, writing and listening skills and improve your IELTS score. Course Content The programme of study contains English s a Foreign Language and a variety of business related subjects such as:. Numeracy and statistics. Business economics. IT/computing/e-business. Organisation structures. Personal development. Marketing. Business communications. Legal aspects of business A research project.. Business planning. Finance. Study skills Cours e structure The course starts at the beginning of September with a week s orientation and induction and continues until the beginning of July. All classes are taught in English by specialists and all subjects are compulsory. You will spend 2 ½ to 3 ½ days per week in College depending on your needs. Assessment All units will be set and assessed internally using a range of methods. You will need to achieve 60 credits to pass the course, 45 at level 3 (A Level standard) and 15 at Level 2 (GCSE Standard). Students will be registered with the Open College Network and Credits will be awarded for the successful completion of units. The Access to Higher Education Diploma will be awarded to successful students; this is a recognised qualification for those who may wish to apply to another Further Education or Higher Education (University) institution. Progression Upon successful completion of the course, students may apply to a University of their choice for either a HND or BA Degree. Alternatively, students may apply to a range of Higher Education courses within the Sheffield College, including the Foundation Degree in Business, Management and Enterprise. Expectations and commitment You must have enthusiasm and a commitment to study and maintain a minimum of 85% attendance throughout the full duration of the course. Counselling and Guidance A range of support and guidance services are available in the college to meet both academic and personal needs. Your subject and personal tutors will ensure you get a great deal of one to one support in addition to your classroom lectures.
