What is the Royal Greenwich UTC? University Technical Colleges offer a new path to successful careers, developing the next generation of industry leaders. Students start at Royal Greenwich UTC either at 14 or 16 years old. They learn professional, technical, practical and employability skills from industry experts alongside a traditional school curriculum that is designed to deliver more than just good qualifications. All students who complete Year 11 can advance to our post-16 programme where they will continue to work towards their A-levels and industry-related qualifications. A personalised learning programme is developed to suit individual talents, abilities and interests in order to achieve successful academic outcomes and secure future opportunities for employment or further study. Our close links with employers and University of Greenwich will ensure students exposure to the latest industrial and professional methods including traditional practices and cutting-edge technologies. We provide students with a taste of life in a grown-up education institution, the technical experience valued by employers and the personal skills to get ahead in life. The unique curriculum and culture at Royal Greenwich UTC helps to ensure that graduates are better equipped to enter the professional world, confident in their capabilities with the intellectual and practical abilities required to build a rewarding career. Being a part of the UTC has enabled me to work alongside TfI with real projects that I know will come to life. I enjoy attending the UTC because I know I am going to work with teachers who have had jobs in the field I plan on studying in the future. Lillian Okatako, Construction Student Opportunities don t happen you create them. UTC strives and perseveres to help you create these opportunities. Hamza El-Mhandi, Engineering Student The UTC is a brilliant school to attend because there are a lot of opportunities from building to boardroom projects. Adam Pryor, ICT Student 6 7
unique Curriculum Royal Greenwich UTC offers a highly specialised curriculum to help students achieve the best possible educational outcomes and career opportunities. Sponsors have played a key role in developing the Royal Greenwich UTC curriculum, ensuring that the mixture of courses students undertake will match their needs once they graduate. Employers have told us what they are looking for in their young employees and what they believe the future trends will be in their industries. We have created a school that makes our students more employable and better prepared to make a success of their chosen careers. The curriculum at Royal Greenwich UTC is driven by the business projects devised by the UTC s partners which students undertake in small teams. Students are divided into enterprise companies rather than houses and these companies take charge of their own projects, from conception to delivery, working in a business-like atmosphere and with commercial pressures. For example, students learn the core English curriculum to complete their GCSEs, but they also learn how to use their English skills to create a business presentation, produce sales material or create project reports. The connection is made between the classroom and the real-world in a distinctive and exciting way; this in turn motivates the students as they can see how and why their subjects are applied in a work environment. In practice, students learn the fundamentals through practical application. In addition to the academic element of the Royal Greenwich UTC curriculum, students also undertake practical coursework to work towards technical qualifications. The college specialises in providing students with the best opportunity to pursue a career in the engineering or construction industries, including the fields of architectural design, computing and electronics. Students can choose, through a mentoring process, the career path they want to pursue and personalise their coursework to work towards gaining the right qualifications. Academic, technical and practical coursework will be taught side-by-side so that students can stay motivated and focused on their goals throughout their time at Royal Greenwich UTC. I wanted an apprenticeship because after two years of taking A-levels, I knew university wasn t my chosen path and this two year Project Management apprenticeship has more to offer me in terms of career opportunities. Thanks to the theoretical and practical preparation the UTC has given me, I passed all stages with ease. Via regular sponsor projects at the UTC and at TfL sites, I met members of TfL, who supported and helped me through the process. This apprenticeship opens up many doors that will allow me to climb the managerial ladder at TfL. Daniel English, Former Engineering Student and a Head Boy from Royal Greenwich UTC and Current TfL Apprentice 8 9
Facilities Royal Greenwich UTC provides brand new facilities for students to engage them both in and out of the classroom. Over 10 million has been invested in the state-of-the-art facilities to ensure every part of the campus meets the needs of our students and supports them through their time with us. All rooms and areas have been equipped to a high standard so that students will be focused, motivated and enthusiastic whilst studying. Industry standard project zones have been installed to underline the Royal Greenwich UTC commitment to teaching a curriculum specialising in engineering and construction. Students gain hands-on experience to become familiar with the environment they will be working in after they graduate. A key feature of Royal Greenwich UTC is the innovative Apprenticeship Centre where students and employers meet and interact. It will be a place to discuss job opportunities and career paths with professionals and teaching staff. Facilities on offer at Royal Greenwich UTC: A large café Indoor and outdoor recreation areas Break-out zones and social areas Fitness suite Separate construction- and engineering-theory and project zones Two large activity studios Computer-aided manufacturing zones Computer-aided design Electronics zone Science laboratories Graphics and art studios Library/Learning Resource Centre Modern classrooms equipped with IT facilities Apprenticeship Centre 10 11
Student support A core part of the education provided at Royal Greenwich UTC is the extended and personalised enrichment programme that ensures our students will be confident, independent, creative, enterprising problem solvers and great communicators. Ongoing mentoring Every student at Royal Greenwich UTC meets once a month with their mentor to discuss progress on both academic and personal skills development, any issues they may have, and to set and adjust clear short and long term goals. When a student is in need of extra support, this is provided to them through personalised advice as part of their enrichment. For example, if a student wants to pursue a certain career path then they are counselled on the subjects they need to take and the qualifications they need to gain and introduced to a business mentor in the sector to guide their development. Below are some examples of how mentoring can help a student. Personal Academic Professional Helping a student build confidence and motivation. Helping a student overcome individual challenges which they may face outside Royal Greenwich UTC. Developing personal skills such as leadership, teamwork and independence. Working with a student to set achievable academic goals and then ensuring they are met through continuous consultation. Finding where students are struggling in their classes and working together to find solutions and improvement pathways. Meeting with employers and industry professionals to discuss project work and career pathways. Learning more about the opportunities that an industry or employer can provide after graduation or further studies at university or college. Discovering potential courses for further or higher education after graduation. A caring environment The philosophy and culture at Royal Greenwich UTC is to provide students with the best possible learning and personal development environment so that they can achieve their maximum potential. All staff at Royal Greenwich UTC take personal responsibility for providing a safe and nurturing place to learn and develop that is welcoming, supportive and inclusive. The environment is structured to ensure that our students are immersed in their specialism alongside their traditional learning needs and goals. Students are encouraged to make their voices heard. The UTC has an active student council that is linked to the Greenwich Young People s Council. The council is encouraged to give feedback and provide suggestions to the Royal Greenwich UTC governing body so that the UTC can continually improve and provide a better service to its students. We encourage students to work together with staff to create a culture of openness and respect. Out-of-classroom activities An important part of a student s development is their engagement in activities outside of the classroom. Students have access to an extracurricular enrichment programme where they can discover and try new activities and find new passions. On campus there is a café for students to use to catch up and socialise. There is also an outdoor area where students can relax and unwind. For the more fitness-orientated students we have a dedicated fitness suite as well as two large studios that can be used for activities such as sports, social clubs, drama and dance. The out-of-classroom activities at Royal Greenwich UTC encourage students to be active within their community, stay motivated in their studies and develop their teamwork and leadership skills. It is these qualities that employers look for when selecting candidates, providing a great platform for a brighter future
Pathways to success All students undertake academic coursework alongside learning technical skills to gain new qualifications. There are many options at Royal Greenwich UTC to help students achieve their goals. Academic coursework and technical qualifications In Years 10 and 11 students primarily work towards gaining their GCSE qualifications and take a range of technical and practical options available to them. This reflects a typical working day in business and uses the extended day to reduce the need for formal homework. The day is divided by breaks in the morning and afternoon with a lunch break in the middle of the day. The day finishes with a briefing period in which students can work together. *These subject offerings may change depending on government announcements and regulations and student numbers
Application Frequently asked questions Application forms for a place at Royal Greenwich UTC are available online at or by contacting info@greenwichutc.com. Applications for admission are made directly through Royal Greenwich UTC, either online or by filling out an application form. Entry points are Year 10 and Year 12. The UTC will admit 150 students to each of these year groups. Royal Greenwich UTC is a relatively new option for students entering Year 10 and Year 12. The UTC honours any advanced status students may have in mathematics and English, allowing students to take these subjects at the end of Year 10. Applications close at the end of October. All applicants will be contacted regarding the time and date of their ability banding test. Ability banding tests will be held early to mid-january. This test does not involve a pass or fail score, but aims to assess the applicant s educational needs. An equal number of students of all abilities will be offered a place at Royal Greenwich UTC. The first round of offers will be made in early December. The deadline for accepting offers is in January. Late applications can be considered. Please see the Royal Greenwich UTC admissions policy online at The UTC is a sub-regional provision that welcomes student applications of all abilities from south east and east London. We do not put restrictions on applications however please check our website for details on the admissions process. How will Royal Greenwich UTC deliver results when it is so new? Royal Greenwich UTC has adopted a clear curriculum framework designed to keep students focused and motivated. It has enthusiastic and committed sponsors with a direct interest in the success of its students. Every student is individually mentored and supported. Parents and students are regularly updated on academic results and progress. Why are the working days so long? Royal Greenwich UTC aims to get the most out of practical and theoretical classes; students are encouraged to practice new skills and study subjects in depth. This supports greater success in examinations, extend skills and allow time to develop employability skills that will ensure our students are well prepared for life after graduation. Why year olds? At 14 years old, students are getting ready to choose the pathway which they will follow for the rest of their lives. If they are passionate about engineering, construction and related industries then Royal Greenwich UTC could be a perfect option. By the time a student graduates at 19 years old they will be well-prepared for the challenges ahead. Are students of all abilities welcome? Yes! Applicants take an ability banding test which places them into one of three bands. An equal number of applicants from each band are then offered a place, ensuring that students of all abilities attend Royal Greenwich UTC. What are the fees and charges? Royal Greenwich UTC does not charge fees and the costs are no different to attending a state school. The only cost is clothing. All safety equipment for practical work is supplied. There is a café on campus where students can purchase cheap, healthy meals and snacks. Entitlement for free school meals will apply as normal. What is the dress code? All students are expected to wear business attire that would be acceptable in an office. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to be worn during practical and technical classes is provided. The UTC sometimes has a dress-down Friday whereby dress code rules are relaxed. For a complete guideline of the dress code please visit What is the typical size of a class? Royal Greenwich UTC is intended to be a small college and in its first year of operation we had 300 students, our full capacity in our second year is 600 students. Normal class sizes are 25 pupils or less. What do you mean by businesslike environment? Royal Greenwich UTC aims to give students a taste of the working world. The UTC will provide students with an environment where they can be more independent and accountable in their working arrangements. Business courtesies will apply so students are expected to be respectful of others and to work co-operatively through all tasks. Will students still have homework? Royal Greenwich UTC s longer working days greatly reduce the amount of homework as students will cover most of the necessary work while in class and will have the added bonus of being able to ask their teachers and mentors instantly for advice
