3 Fast Facts about the Technical College System of Georgia Record-setting college enrollment Enrollment at the 25 TCSG colleges grew by 30% between FY2008 and FY2011: a declining economy and growing student interest in technical education fueled the TCSG enrollment surge between FY08 and the all-time record in FY10. Slightly better economic conditions in led to a leveling in FY11: Year Students Annual Growth FY11 189, % FY10 190, % FY09 156,271 +7% FY08 145, Main Menu Enrollment Full Time Equivalent (FTE) 190, , , , , , ,271 97, ,013 72,037 69,277 67,311 70,796 77, Note: Does not include University System of Georgia colleges with technical divisions

4 3 Fast Facts about the Technical College System of Georgia Main Menu One-third more students contributed to 1.5 million additional credit hours: TCSG students received almost 4.7 million credit hours of instruction in FY11, up from 3.2 million hours in FY08. That s a 50% increase in instruction hours in just three years. The recession has been a factor in enrollment: large numbers of unemployed and underemployed men and women have enrolled in the TCSG colleges to train for new, in-demand careers. As a result, there s been a corresponding increase in the number of older students at TCSG colleges: Age FY08 FY11 % Increase Under 21 41,459 45, % ,649 46, % ,976 28, % ,144 20, % ,807 16, % Over 40 21,955 31, % More high school grads are making the TCSG a first choice: in a 2009 report from the Georgia Governor s Office of Student Achievement, TCSG colleges ranked among the top 10 most popular post-secondary choices for high school graduates in 165 state school systems, and a technical college education was the first choice for graduates in 62 of those school systems. TCSG programs allow younger students to attend high school and college together: last year, 5,433 Georgia high school students took classes at TCSG colleges through dual and joint enrollment programs. They earn high school and technical college credits at the same time, and most of the costs are paid for by the state. 6 5 Fast Facts about the Technical College System of Georgia Smart decisions lead to improved results TCSG college tuition is affordable Main Menu Between 2009 and 2011 the TCSG reduced 33 colleges to 25 by merging 15 of its colleges into seven (combined colleges by order of merger): 1. Chattahoochee Technical College (Chattahoochee Tech, N. Metro Tech, Appalachian Tech) 2. Georgia Northwestern Technical College (Coosa Valley Tech, Northwestern Tech) 3. Southeastern Technical College (Southeastern Tech, Swainsboro Tech) 4. Southern Crescent Technical College (Griffin Tech, Flint River Tech) 5. West Georgia Technical College (West Georgia Tech, West Central Tech) 6. Wiregrass Georgia Technical College (Valdosta Tech, East Central Tech) 7. Oconee Fall Line Technical College (Sandersville Tech, Heart of Georgia Tech) The TCSG college mergers make good education and business sense: each merger saved Georgia at least $500,000 annually on administrative costs while increasing student access to a wider range of learning opportunities. No colleges were closed and all of the pre-merger campuses remain vitally important to the students, businesses and communities that they serve. TCSG colleges converted from quarters to semesters in Fall 2011: the TCSG is bringing Georgia closer to the goal of seamless education with a new calendar and semester credit hour alignment that makes it easier for students to transfer to other Georgia colleges and universities. Today, more than 80% of all the U.S. colleges and universities are on semesters. Semesters provide added opportunities: TCSG students now have more time to master course material and they can delve more deeply into course content. They also gain more skills from internships, clinicals and other forms of hands-on learning. Semester calendar alignment also enhances dual and joint enrollment opportunities for high school students looking to jump start their college education. TCSG is bargain when it comes to a quality college education: the cost for a standard semester credit hour at a TCSG college is $75, which is among the lowest in the southeast. The average tuition for a full semester course load is $1,125. Grants make a TCSG education even more affordable: Georgia s HOPE grant and scholarship and the federal Pell grant will pay for most of a TCSG education; the number of TCSG students using HOPE (mostly in grants) or Pell, grew substantially between FY08 and FY11. Many TCSG students are eligible to receive both HOPE and Pell. FY08 FY11 % Increase Pell recipients* 46, , % HOPE recipients* 106, , % *numbers may be duplicated by students who receive both HOPE and Pell

7 Main Menu 2012 Only one quarter of HOPE dollars were used by TCSG students in FY11: while 55% of all HOPE recipients were TCSG students, only 28% of the HOPE funds went to TCSG students. FY 2011 HOPE Students FY 2011 HOPE Dollars TCSG 55.5% USG 38.5% TCSG 28% USG 65% Private 6% Private 7% TCSG offers in-demand programs, real careers TCSG colleges offer small classes, hands-on experience, more instructor attention: each TCSG college offers small student-to-teacher ratios and the learning is hands-on using state-of the-art equipment and real-world settings. TCSG programs supply the workforce for Georgia s strategic industries: Georgia s technical colleges offer programs related to the six strategic industries that the Commission for a New Georgia identified as vital to Georgia s competitive place in the global economy: aerospace, healthcare, life sciences including biotechnology, agribusiness, energy and the environment, and logistics and transportation. Two in five TCSG students are enrolled in strategic industry programs: 40% of TCSG students are enrolled in programs related to careers in Georgia s strategic industries. Healthcare is top among TCSG students: programs related to the vital healthcare sector are the number one choice for TCSG students. TCSG graduates are headed to the workforce: Last year, 35,034 TCSG students graduated with either technical certificates of credit, diplomas or associate degrees. TCSG grads are helping to bridge the nation s skills gap and filling jobs that require 21st Century skills and knowledge: 6

9 Main Menu 2012 The nation s best workforce training program Quick Start is Georgia s internationally-acclaimed program dedicated to providing customized workforce training free-of-charge to qualified new, expanding and existing businesses. Since 1967, the TCSG s Quick Start program has developed training systems for a wide range of state, national and international companies that have either relocated or expanded their operations in Georgia. Quick Start is the best workforce training program in the nation: Quick Start has consistently ranked at the top among all the states in workforce training over the last 10 years. In FY11, executives from companies such as King s Hawaiian, Toyo Tire, Firth Rixson, Kia, NCR and others cited Quick Start as one of Georgia s most unique assets for economic development. Quick Start attracts international businesses: 30% of Quick Start s projects in FY11 were with international companies. Business and industry employees trained by Quick Start in FY11: 98,544 employees Jobs either created or saved in Georgia through Quick Start in FY11: 13,658 jobs 8 Global companies talk about Quick Start Quick Start was a key to Toyo deciding to locate in Georgia. There isn t anything I ve seen in the country like Quick Start. When I told the company everything Quick Start had done, the chairman said, Build your building. And do it in Rockmart. Quick Start was a major factor in our decision to come to Georgia. The state of Georgia may not realize the jewel they have in Quick Start. It is a differentiator.
