General Framework This course prepares students with a comprehensive introduction to effective management principles and conduct. It not only aims at providing students with an introduction to contemporary management concepts and skills, it also encourages students to put these concepts and skills into practice. Through the course, students are expected to improve their skills to manage their study and personal lives. In addition, they will be equipped with management competence and understanding of managerial ethics for their future career. Also prepare students on how to handle change and how to innovate and act entrepreneurially. The course aims to provide students with an understanding of change and entrepreneurship within organizations, and to develop an active approach in dealing with external and internal change as well as in seizing entrepreneurial opportunities.
2 C. Course Intentions On completion of this course, students will be able to: Develop knowledge of fundamental management concepts and SKILLS and learn from real managers how to apply them. Identify the internal and external factors and forces of the organization that managers must confront in their daily work. Examine the functions of management: such as planning, organizing, leading, controlling, and decision making. Identify the key competencies needed to be an effective manager. Be creative and be able to propose pertinent and innovative business ideas. Improve their ability to present analyses of issues and organizational problems in a concise, accurate, clear and interesting manner. D. Teaching Methodology Students should actively engage in the learning process and in putting concepts learnt into practice. The major learning modes of this course are: Action learning: Students are encouraged to learn actively and cooperatively in teams. Students in groups of four to five should undertake an action learning management consulting project. Lectures: Sessions will involve lectures, case studies, discussions and debates, and presentations of related topics and current issues related to course contents. E. Evaluation Course grades will be determined according to the following schedule: Midterm 2 20% Presentations 30% Exam (Final Paper) 30% Class participation 20% Considerations: To have the right to final qualification the student should comply with an 80% of minimum assistance to classes.
3 Administrative Matters Members of a team should attend to each activity. The absences to presentations or to a client visit will be evaluated with note 1. The visits to the client and the presentations are on formal dress code. The presentations should be prepared in PowerPoint or something innovative and is responsibility of the student to be assured that the necessary equipment is in the class room. Delays to any activity are NOT accepted. *Note on Class Participation and Attendance. Class participation is a significant component of your final grade. Students are expected to come to class fully prepared to discuss the topics assigned for the day. Obviously, students who are not present cannot participate in class, and must therefore demonstrate their preparedness in other ways. If you are unable to attend class for any reason, you are expected to call and notify me of your absence prior to class and to prepare a two-page memorandum summarizing the day's material for submission prior to the next class. The participation grade awarded for the missed class will be based upon the quality of the memo. If a satisfactory memo is not received in a timely fashion, the student will receive no participation credit for the missed class.
