4 Artstrek THE Summer Theatre School for Teens The world of theatre is yours to explore this summer in RDC s state-of-the-art performing arts facilities. Work with a team of talented instructors, create alongside other young artists and discover the tools theatre professionals use to shape stories on stage. Acting, voice, movement, directing, design, sound/music, creation and collaboration are all part of a mix that includes stage time along with studio instruction. At Artstrek, our focus is on the learning, exploration and process of theatre not simply the rehearsal of lines and blocking of scenes. For more than 55 years, Artstrek has been welcoming any and all Alberta teens passionate about theatre and enthusiastic about learning. Artstrek is the reason for smiles, tears of joy, and enough to get me, a seventeen year old, out of bed each morning at seven am. 4

Artstrek enthusiastically presents, for its 2016 play of study... Instructors Theatre Alberta recruits leading theatre educators and working professionals from across Alberta to teach at Artstrek. Our instructors bring an extensive practical and academic base of knowledge to the program and will connect participants directly to the theatre scene in Alberta. 6 July July Teen Film Camps THE Film Camps for Teens RDC Teen Film Camps are the first film camps of their kind! This is your opportunity to jump into the world of film. Join others and be immersed in a practical, hands-on experience exploring films and filmmaking. Spend a week shooting, acting, directing, editing and trying different crew positions to create a visual story. Filmmaking is all about collaboration you will work directly with some of Alberta s finest actors, filmmakers and instructors as you transform your ideas into film. Evenings will be filled with guest presentations and special screenings. The camp exposed me to a different culture. I always thought, This is a neat idea but it might just be a hobby for me. After coming here, I m like, I want this to be my life. 6

7 Teen Film Camp Week years old Learn the basic techniques used in the motion picture industry and spend the week shooting and editing your short films. Get hands-on, practical experience in specialized workshops that focus on acting, directing, camera, lighting techniques, editing, post-production, equipment operation, producing and sound recording. Under the guidance of film pros, you will collaborate on film projects, critique dailies and watch selected screenings of pertinent films. In addition to making short films, you will learn about career opportunities for filmmakers and the business of movie making. Week 1 includes: Set Etiquette & Safety basic theory of set etiquette and safety, stressing the importance of communication and teamwork. Acting extensive workshops in acting and audition techniques for the big screen. Directing preparation, rehearsals, script breakdown and shot lists. Production Managing/Assistant Directing organizing and scheduling, securing locations, equipment requirements and ensuring production runs smoothly. Camera hands-on camera operation, shooting formats, lenses, exposure and lighting using professional, cutting-edge industry equipment. Editing/Continuity non-linear editing, picture and sound editing, transitions and effects, color correction and final output. Art Direction/Art Department learn about what makes a good movie look like a great movie. Sound recording formats, microphones, boom operation, monitoring, recording levels, dialogue, room tone, microphone placement and sound FX. July Course #299 $729 + GST July Extra Overnight Course #1680 $75 + GST Teen Film Camp Week years old In Week 2, you will discover what making a movie is really like. This jam-packed week takes the form of a professional film shoot with a 2K-camera package and 5.1 sound mixing post facility. You and your team will have creative control on a real set with the added advantage of having film pros working nearby to assist and provide guidance on development, production, postproduction and the realities of the industry. Expand your skills by using the concepts introduced in Week 1 and delve further into specific aspects of the moviemaking machine. Learn how to prepare a shooting script, scout a location, cast, rehearse, block, shoot and edit a short film. 8 Game Design Camps THE Video Game Design Camps for Teens If you dream of working in the world of gaming, the Game Design Camps are a must! These unique overnight camps provide an opportunity to explore your passion for video game design. Work with a team of professional programmers and designers as you build your own video game. Spend your free time hanging out with friends in the dorms, challenging others to console and computer gaming tournaments and finalizing components of your team s game. It s amazing how much we got to use the equipment. I loved it. 8

9 The learning was thorough, the instructors were encouraging and the toolset was relatively easy to use. July July Game Design Camp Week years old Learn the fundamental ins and outs of writing and designing games using Project Spark. This handson, practical workshop includes story and character development, production, strategy and level designs, scripting, animation, interfaces, quality assurance as well as programing in computer software. You ll get to keep the game you designed so you can continue developing it when you get home. Be prepared to concentrate and have fun! July Course #1331 $729 + GST July Extra Overnight Course #1681 $75 + GST Game Design Camp Week years old Are you ready to level up everything you learned in Week 1? Spend another week with our industry pros to expand on skills in story and character development, scripts, graphics and animations with Unity. Throughout the process, you ll be encouraged to share your ideas but also challenged to focus on mechanics (the rules, challenges and interactions that make your video game fun to play). I was expecting good camps, but when I got here it was way better than I ever imagined. And it kept getting better and better, every day. 10 THE Summer Music Experience! MusiCamp Alberta is a provincial overnight summer music workshop. MusiCamp Alberta faculty comprises world-class performers and teachers drawn from professional ensembles who act as role models by teaching artistry, discipline and an appreciation of music. Our faculty and staff strive to motivate you and share their joy of accomplishments in music. We maintain an atmosphere where musical creativity is encouraged and we recognize the importance of each student. MusiCamp Alberta offers musical instruction second to none and a summer artistic and personal transformation that will last a lifetime. Practice time, recitals, master classes, evening activities, performances and organized, supervised recreation complete the camp experience. Included are dances, skit nights, dorm activities and campfires. Our team of trained supervisors will ensure you are safe and engaged at all times. Peterkin Symphonic Band Recommended if you have completed Grade 10 or higher with at least three years experience on your instrument. Included are full band rehearsals, small ensembles, private lessons, practice time, a variety of musicianship and option classes and faculty concerts. July 24 August 6 Course #138 $ GST Francis E. Dunnigan Concert Band Recommended if you are in Grades 8, 9 or 10 with at least two years experience on your instrument. Included are full band rehearsals, small ensembles, private lessons, practice time, musicianship, option classes and faculty concerts. July Course #1644 $695 + GST Jazz Band Workshop Dive into the world of jazz music that includes improvisation, jazz listening, style, phrasing, big band charts, chord reading and soloing. This unique approach to learning the jazz method will be clear and inclusive. The workshop is perfect if you have little or no jazz experience, or if you are an advanced player wanting to build confidence in jazz skills. July 31 August 6 Course #1645 $695 + GST MusiCamp Alberta Mixed Chorus If you are a singer between the ages of 11 16, this is THE summer choir experience. Included are full choir rehearsals, private coaching, movement classes, musicianship classes and faculty concerts. The focus will be on vocal production, developing musicianship and ensemble and solo singing. Repertoire from many choral styles will be included. August 7 13 Course #1646 $695 + GST Musical Theatre Recommended if you are in Grades 7 12 and want to develop skills in musical theatre. Become the next triple threat as you learn vocal technique, performance ability and choreography all with popular musical excerpts. August 7 13 Course #985 $695 + GST Facility MusiCamp Alberta summer music workshops are held in the Arts Centre, a stunning performing arts facility.you will live on campus in residence facilities consisting of apartment-style accommodations. Housing is arranged by age, gender and program so you will room with other members of your ensemble. Scholarship and Bursary Opportunities Many schools, music parent societies, festivals and service organizations provide financial assistance for students interested in continuing their musical training. Outstanding MusiCamper Scholarship During each week of MusiCamp, one camper who demonstrates leadership, musicianship, progress and enthusiasm will be selected to receive a scholarship to return to MusiCamp the following summer. How Much Is It? Fees include registration, tuition, accommodation, meals, a t-shirt, lanyard and recreation. An administration fee of $30 will be charged on all cancellations. No refunds will be issued after June 24,

12 THE Visual Arts Workshop for Teens Make Art! Make Friends! Make a Difference! For teens aged years, SummerScapes is the only overnight visual arts workshop of its kind in Alberta. Immerse yourself in creating art and tell your story through drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking. Work with some of Alberta s finest artists and educators as they guide you through the process of making art. Get motivated and challenged as you learn fundamental skills and concepts used in creating visual art. You will learn techniques and use materials not normally available in traditional art programs. We all learned more than just techniques in painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture. We were also given an insight into what being an artist could feel like. 12

13 I took this camp because I wanted to surround myself with my passion and meet people that felt the same about making art as I do. August 7 13 Draw What is it that all artists have in common? They all draw! Drawing is the medium that connects all artistic practices. Explore a variety of media including charcoal, ink, form, line, texture and tone. Observational drawing skills will be stressed. Paint Colour, technique, tools and materials learn the stuff you need to get your ideas on canvas. Seize the paint palette, experimenting with pieces in oil, acrylic and watercolour. Sculpt Learn structural principles to create new, original works of art. Both realistic and abstract sculpture may be included, using a variety of materials from bronze to metal, clay, found objects or cast plaster. Print Explore the unique processes that allow you to merge drawing, painting and printmaking into rich works of art. Experiment with various printing processes including linoleum cuts, mono-prints, wood cuts and etchings. Program Check-In & Exhibition Check-in for SummerScapes: Sunday, August 7 from 3:00 pm 4:00 pm at the RDC Residence Common Building. The program will end with a student exhibition on Saturday, August 13 at 10:00 am in the Centre for Visual Arts (Room 2901) at RDC. Student Scholarships A number of visual arts organizations, schools and service clubs sponsor students to attend SummerScapes. RDC would be pleased to reserve a spot if you are interested in sponsoring a student to attend SummerScapes. How Much Does it Cost? The fee of $525 + GST includes tuition, supplies, accommodation, food and a T-shirt. Options Keep your creativity flowing! Every evening will be a new adventure the art doesn t stop at 4:00 pm. 14 July Animation Camp NEW! Tell stories through the principles of animation using Maya, the industry standard for high-end 3D computer animation, effects and modeling. You will progress through basic motion and rendering exercises and finish with a collection of short animations (including sound) of your own design by the end of the week. Included will be the basics of movement, timing, weight and character development, as well as story telling, project planning and problem solving. July Course #1679 $729 + GST Program Check-In Check-in for Animation Camp: Sunday, July 17 between 3:00 4:00 pm Program Screening Each week of the Film, Game Design and Animation Camps will end with a final screening of projects to show parents and friends. Student screenings will take place on Saturday, July 16 and July 23 at 10:00 am in the Margaret Parsons Theatre at RDC. Confirmation packages with additional camp information will be sent to you with receipt of payment. Facility Learn the art of animation, filmmaking and game design at RDC with a soundstage, large, well-lit classrooms and smaller, specialized rooms for breakaway sessions. How Much Is It? 15 Good to Know Our overnight camps allow students the opportunity to stay on campus while attending camp. Waiver Within two weeks of registering, you will receive a welcome package and a mandatory waiver form. The waiver will collect all information required to attend camp. This form must be signed and submitted for your child to participate in the camp. If a medical condition requires special attention or caution (such as nut or bee allergies), please notify the Camp Coordinator prior to the camp start date. College-Style Eating We want the best for our students and we know proper nutrition is vital to learning success and general wellbeing. As part of the full camp experience, you will eat in the college cafeteria, buffet-style. We ve got you covered for breakfast, lunch and dinner all meals are included in your tuition price. You re welcome to pack extra snacks, purchase additional munchies from on-campus vendors or bring along a refillable water bottle. Dietary restrictions? Vegan? Vegetarian? Gluten-free? Don t worry let us know of any special dietary needs and we ll do our very best to accommodate you. Accomodation While at camp, you will live on campus in our residence facilities consisting of apartmentstyle accommodations. Each suite contains four single bedrooms, a bath and a kitchen/living room. You will have your own individual bedroom with a locking door. Housing is arranged by age, gender and program. You will be safe and supervised at all times, including night supervision. Tax Credit Parents can claim money spent on Fine Arts programs up to a maximum of $500 of the cost.
