3 Cmmn Fraud Schemes Credit Card (CC) Fraud CC numbers are btained by varius means such as: Access/skimming devices: These are purchased via the Internet n illegal websites. CC inf can be accessed by emplyees such as bank emplyees, medical facility emplyees, even gvernment emplyees, phishing s, cmputer hacking, applicatins, and data breaches. Plastic cards with magnetic strips can be re-encded with cmprmised CC numbers and persnal infrmatin. If suspect(s) are unable t re-encde magnetic strip, the CC numbers can be embssed n a plastic card, usually with a bank emblem n it. CC must then be manually entered, which many businesses will nt d. This methd is nt as cmmn anymre, but it still happens. CC number is used t make purchases via the Internet

7 Cmmn Fraud Schemes Persnal Infrmatin is used t apply fr a CC, phne service, lans, r t take ver persnal accunts, etc. Persnal Infrmatin generally includes any r all f the fllwing: name, Address date f birth scial security number DL number Any identifier assigned t an individual.

8 Accunt Takever Occurs when an unauthrized subject (may r may nt be a suspect) is added t the accunt via the internet r telephne. Infrmatin such as accunt phne number and address, usually a drp address, may be changed n the accunt. Savings and ther accunts at the same bank that may r may nt be linked are cmprmised and the mney is transferred int the initial cmprmised accunt. A new debit card r checkbk assigned t the unauthrized subject is btained, mainly by being mailed t the drp address. ATM withdrawals and/r purchases are made with the new debit card until accunt is wiped ut r the fraud is caught. Mney rders may be purchased due t daily withdrawal limits at ATM.

Checks can be cunterfeited and signature frged. Cunterfeit checks are then made payable t a mule wh enters a bank r check cashing stre t cash the check. Suspects are usually waiting utside fr the mule t walk ut with the mney. If the suspect(s) see law enfrcement arriving, they quickly leave, leaving the mule behind t get arrested.

Yu can always lk up the number f the cmpany and call them back yurself t verify. D NOT believe the cntact inf they give yu. File yur incme taxes as early as pssible.
