The blue ribbon The blue ribbon has been the national symbol for child abuse prevention since the observance began in One grandmother, Bonnie Finney in Norfolk, Virginia, tied a ribbon to the antenna of her van in memory of her grandson, who had been killed at the hands of his mother s boyfriend. The blue symbolizes the bruises both obvious and hidden that abused children suffer. Each April, PFSA distributes thousands of blue ribbon pins across PA. PA Family Support Alliance (PFSA) Programs Training for professionals Mandated reporter training program provides face to face and web based training and education for professionals in several formats. Advocacy for legislative and systems change regarding reporting child abuse. 13

PA Family Support Alliance (PFSA) Programs Support for families PFSA affiliated programs provide education and support for parents/caregivers, with training, resources and technical assistance from PFSA Publications on a variety of child welfare topics for parents and professionals PA Family Support Alliance (PFSA) Programs Education for communities The Front Porch Project primary prevention program for the general public. Based on the belief that ordinary people can and should be more aware of how to help protect children in their communities. Provides strategies for helping and prepares citizens for intervention with families. 14

PFSA sponsors awareness and prevention events statewide Legislative breakfast Opportunity to thank legislators who support child welfare reforms and educate them about child abuse prevention. Keynote speaker addresses big picture. This year s event Wednesday, April 2 in Harrisburg Sen.Michael O Pake Memorial Award for Media Public Service PFSA sponsors awareness and prevention events statewide Painting for Prevention Since 2008, 19 collaborative murals have been created in communities across the state. Local stakeholders design and create the artwork as an ongoing prevention message. This year s events will be April 17 in Sunbury and April 26 in Philadelphia. 15

PFSA participates in a variety of events in April Project Child Conference Bethlehem, PA PA Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services conference State College, PA Adams County Child Abuse Prevention Conference Gettysburg, PA National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect New Orleans, LA What can you do to prevent child abuse? Wear your blue ribbon every day in April (Child Abuse Prevention Month). When people notice your blue ribbon, talk about the many ways families receive help and support to prevent child abuse. Distribute blue ribbon pins to others. Attend a Front Porch Project training in your community. Learn what to do and how to step in to help a child. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper to discuss the problem and prevention of child abuse. 18

What can you do to prevent child abuse? Know how to recognize and report child abuse. Learn about the child welfare system. Contact elected officials and request that they support programs that strengthen families; remember their responses next time you vote. Ask the groups you belong to clubs, churches, recreational facilities to provide good child care so more families can participate. Reach out to a child. A word of encouragement, a friendly smile and a compliment are important to a child. We can prevent child abuse in Pennsylvania. When people hear what others are doing to create positive, healthy communities for our kids, their immediate response is I can do that! As we expand our actions and influence one little step at a time, we will be contributing to a quiet revolution that will restore the type of culture that is healthy for our kids, and hence, healthy for us all.
