3 LIBERAL STUDIES REQUIREMENTS (5 unit hours) English 105 or equivalent with a B or above. If you don t receive a B, you may complete an additional writing course, at the 200 level or above with at least a B to meet the requirement. MAT 110, 114 or acceptable equivalent with at least a C Cultural Understanding 6 credit hours Social and Political Worlds 6 credit hours (ECO 284 or 285 will fulfill) (GSP 240 or 241 will fulfill) Science/Lab Sciences 7 credit hours Aesthetic & Humanistic Inquiry 6 credit hours Liberal Studies Elective credit hours (ESE 04 will fulfill) 4 Diversity 6 unit hours (NAU Diversity requirement may be met in Liberal Studies, major, minor, or as an elective) US/Ethnic (HIS 29, HIS 96, and HIS 81) Global Awareness (HIS 102 will fulfill) We strongly recommend taking courses in liberal studies that help build your knowledge in the social sciences for teaching social studies in secondary schools. We also recommend to build communication skills, e.g. communications; theatre; psychology, etc. CST 111, 14, 15, 151, 271, 21, 2 are especially recommended. 4 ADMISSION INTO THE PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION TEACHER PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS Applications to the Professional Education Unit at NAU are submitted between February 1-15 and September 1-15 of each year. Students are required to apply at least one semester before curriculum and methods education courses (History 0: Teaching and Learning History and Geography and History 06: Practicum in the Schools, etc.) are planned (generally applications are done at the end of the sophomore year). To apply to the Teacher Education Program, visit: For information, go to CAL Student Services Office, Riles Building (#15), Room 200, (928) : Resources/Teacher- Education- Program/ To apply you must meet the following: REQUIREMENT 0 semester units of course work completed at time of application and they must include the following ENG 105 or equivalent with a minimum cumulative GPA of.0 MAT 110, 114 or acceptable equivalent with at least a C EDF 200 Intro to Education or acceptable equivalent with at least a C Cumulative.0 in all History and Social Science Courses (e.g. POS, GSP, ECO) Cumulative 2.5 GPA in Liberal Studies courses Cumulative 2.5 GPA in all courses History and Social Studies Education Declared major Admission to Northern Arizona University A copy of fingerprint clearance card You must have a fingerprint clearance card to do go into the schools (beginning in History 206). It takes 5-18 weeks to get one. You can do this by going to the police department anywhere in Arizona (it must be done in Arizona). Available on the history website Completed and fulfilled successfully ADDITIONAL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS REQUIREMENT Completed a minimum of 120 credit hours required for graduation Completed and fulfilled successfully GPA of.0 in History and Social Studies content course work. Grade point average of at least 2.5 in your entire Northern Arizona University course work in order to graduate. This requirement applies to all B.S.Ed. majors at Northern Arizona University. SIGNATURE ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENT Candidates in the History/Social Studies Education program are required to demonstrate content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and skills, and professional knowledge to be eligible to enter student teaching or internship placements. Content, pedagogical, and professional knowledge and skills are demonstrated through candidate performance on key assessments embedded in the HIS 0, HIS 40, BME 47, EPS 25, and ECI 495C courses.
