Sport, Health and Exercise Science at Hull This rapidly growing department specialises in sport and exercise science courses and the interface of these with athletes and coaches as well as an exercising population. Benefiting from rising numbers of staff, along with expanding facilities and state-of-the-art equipment, we have been able to offer well-resourced and comprehensive degree courses. These courses reflect the latest developments within the sport, health and leisure industries. A centre of excellence for the region The Department of Sport, Health and Exercise Science has teamed up with the newly established Hull York Medical School (HYMS) to develop a centre for sporting and scientific excellence. A state-of-the-art Health and Human Performance Laboratory has recently been built to provide support for sportsmen, sportswomen, their coaches and their fitness advisers, and for the study of the sport and exercise sciences in the broadest sense. The laboratory already offers a full range of sport science support, including fitness and performance profiling, biomechanical analysis, lifestyle and psychological counselling, performance analysis, rehabilitation and other medical support, and various coach education programmes. Recognised quality Our degrees are certified and approved by the country s leading national bodies in the discipline. Skills Active and Sports Coach UK, for example, endorse our degree in Sports Coaching and Performance, while our Sport Rehabilitation programme is accredited by the British Association of Sports Rehabilitators and Trainers. Supporting local sport We aim to provide sport science support to local performers, including those involved in the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme, both at the elite level and for those aspiring to elite performance. This support is delivered both at our sport science laboratories and at local sporting clubs. The department has forged a number of productive links with local professional sports clubs, including Hull City Football Club and Hull Kingston Rovers Rugby League Club. The department also strives to develop community links through coach education programmes offered within local facilities. We enjoy links with Local Authority Sports Development units in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire, and with the Humber Sports Partnership (our local County Sports Partnership), as well as relationships with a range of governing bodies and private providers including the Rugby Football Union, the Rugby Football League, the East Riding County Football Association and First Step Sports, plus a range of local school partnerships. These links with sporting clubs and associations provide our students with additional scope to develop practical skills and to gain experience of working as a sport scientist, sports coach or sports rehabilitator. Sport, health and exercise science 1
Measuring excellence Our Exercise Physiology Research Laboratory boasts a wide range of high-spec equipment, including automated spectrophotometers, micro-plate readers, a haematology analyser, blood lactate and glucose analysers and a blood gas/electrolyte analyser. The lab s treadmill is capable of speeds up to 40 km/h with 30% incline. Such equipment is an absolute necessity when working with elite athletes as we frequently do.
Our students can benefit by participating in research projects carried out by staff. Providing an opportunity to learn more advanced lab skills and to see the steps involved in the research process, this is invaluable when it comes to the undergraduate dissertation in the third year.

Our courses reflect the latest developments within the sport, health and leisure industries. University learning is consolidated by a minimum of 400 hours of clinical placement in the work environment for example with sport clubs, private practitioners and in occupational health. Inclusive learning ensures that there is close personal contact between staff and students. Lectures are supported by tutorials, seminars and practical sessions which utilise dedicated facilities such as the sport rehabilitation suite and sport injury clinic together with the excellent on-site sporting facilities. BSc Sports Coaching and Performance The BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Performance programme is specifically designed for those wanting to pursue a career in the coaching of children, adolescents or adults across all levels of abilities. This course may also be of interest to those wishing to pursue a career in the teaching of Physical Education. In 2011, the course was professionally accredited by Sports Coach UK and Skills Active. It is one of the first higher education courses in the UK to have met these industry standards. The programme principally seeks to develop theoretically informed and critically self-reflective coaching practitioners. While the course focuses on the study of sports coaching, graduates also acquire a range of leadership, communication, data handling and critical thinking skills that are beneficial in a wide range of professional careers. The modules on this programme are delivered by experts within the field of sports science and coaching. 13 I like the fact that studying gives me a break from playing and vice versa. I love playing rugby, but I know that it s not for ever and I knew even at school that I d need a career when my playing days were over. I really love my course too. The lecturers and other students are like one big family, and I enjoy the hands-on nature of my studies. I also believe that my degree could work well with my rugby career I could provide sports rehab support for the club on days when I m not playing or training. Juggling a degree and a burgeoning playing career requires discipline and understanding from both sides. Thankfully, Hull FC and the University have been brilliantly supportive. The club has been happy for me to come to university for classes on the days I need to, even if there s a clash with a training session; and the University allowed me an extension on my work when I was chosen to play for the first team. 14 Some of our areas of study Sport, Health and Exercise Psychology The modules that make up this strand examine the contribution that psychology can make to our understanding of sport/exercise participation and performance, and to our understanding of human cognition and behaviour in sport. They focus on the psychology in sport psychology and offer an in-depth understanding of the athlete and exerciser. Anatomy and Human Physiology These units aim to introduce the basic anatomy of joints and muscles, and include consideration of the physiology of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, kidney and fluid balance and the nervous system. Second- and third-year modules examine such topics as the biochemistry of exercise and the mechanisms that control energy metabolism. Research Methods These modules aim, first, to develop an understanding of research design, methodology and analysis using qualitative and quantitative approaches. They include work in both experimental and descriptive methodologies and involve the application of statistical tests and forms of survey method with real data. Later modules provide the skills to conduct empirical studies of individuals and groups. Introduction to Coaching Pedagogy explores the teaching and learning process in sport an issue that is fundamental to coaching success, whether in elite or recreational, adult or junior, settings and examines the complex nature of pedagogical practice in coaching. As well as analysing different theoretical positions, you will apply this knowledge in a practical coaching setting and reflect on your own learning and development as a coach. Analysis of Human Movement The biomechanics thread running through Years 1, 2 and 3 introduces you to the analysis of human movement in sport and health. The first module considers the application of functional anatomy to movement analysis. In Years 2 and 3 a fuller understanding of movement technique analysis is developed in various sports, and performance factors are examined using film and force analysis. In Year 3, you also have the option of conducting biomechanical analysis of movement from a clinical perspective. Students are able to register for a variety of coaching award courses. 12 Sport, health and exercise science
Sports and Exercise Nutrition introduces the six nutritional classes and their role in both resting and exercise states, trains you to use computerised dietary analysis and gives you the opportunity to investigate dietary manipulation for sporting performance. Health and Exercise-Related Fitness introduces you to the theory and principles of training as well as identifying specific training regimes to meet the specific components of fitness. You will investigate the structuring of training to meet both short- and long-term goals. The final-year dissertation provides an opportunity to investigate any aspect of sport and exercise science. Electrotherapy aims to give students a basic understanding of the rationale underlying the use and application of all forms of electrotherapy, including current knowledge with respect to the healing process at the cellular level. Dissertation This provides the opportunity to investigate any aspect of sport and exercise science. You are given guidance by a personal supervisor who has expertise within the relevant discipline, but you retain considerable autonomy over the work you produce. Some students are able to publish their work in international journals. Sports governing body coaching award courses Students can register for a variety of coaching award courses in their own time. These are likely to run in the evenings and at weekends and may entail payment of a fee. In addition students will be able to access generic coaching courses in areas such as child protection and safeguarding, first aid and equity in your coaching. Sport, health and exercise science 13

What our students say Individual support One of the second- or third-year students helped us get settled. Because there are relatively few sport, health and exercise science students, we get individual attention and are not treated as simply a number. At Hull we can also get some of the best careers guidance in the country. On-site facilities At Hull the sports facilities, sport science laboratories, lecture rooms, library, Computer Centre and students union building are all on site and within a short walk of one another. Teaching excellence The Sport, Health and Exercise Science staff inspire you in your studies and challenge you to do your best. 16 Sport, health and exercise science
