4 Business development: The financial position remained solid in the first quarter. The performance will continue to recover depending on the progress of the projects in the course of the financial year. No major receipt of orders was reported in the first quarter of The total order backlog nevertheless remains still at a high level. In addition, there are some interesting project enquiries in each of the segments. However, whether they will crystallize into solid project implementations remains to be seen over the course of the year. The after-sales sector also continues to show a constant order development. The current major projects Göss and Argent are being processed according to plan and will result in corresponding revenue. Due to orders for materials expenditure in the first quarter was disproportionately high and the result was correspondingly negative. On-going improvements will emerge here as project progress continues. The positive contribution from participation in VTU in addition to interest income and taxes is reflected in the net result for the period. The payments in advance received in the previous year for the new orders led to an exceptionally positive operating cash flow in the last quarter of Due to orders of materials and project expenses, these payments however have been reduced again, which is why the operating cash flow in the first quarter of this year is negative. As in the past, BDI shows a very strong equity base, which has increased compared to the first quarter of the previous year by 7% to EUR 50.4 million. At 130 the number of employees is on a par with the previous year. Fortunately, BDI achieved the highest price per share of EUR twice in this quarter. Throughout the rest of the reporting period the share price predominantly developed at a higher level than in the same period last year. During this reporting period, UIC GmbH has opened the renovated, state-of-the-art research centre. The utilization of the extended testing capacities is satisfyingly positive. In the field of algae production in the life science sector, the industrial plant in Hartberg is currently in the basic engineering phase. The preparations for starting the construction this year are underway. Page 4
5 Outlook: There are no changes in the outlook compared to the situation at the end of the year The economic environment remains challenging. It is difficult to forecast the future development of the oil price. Until further notice we are anticipating a sustained low level but foresee a significant recovery in the long term. The on-going migration issue and the upcoming presidential election in the United States are dominating the current political conditions. Unfortunately, progress on implementing the positive results of the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris 2015 at national level is very slow. Despite the persistently low interest rates, willingness to invest in our industry is suffering is characterized by processing the two major biodiesel orders in the UK and the start-up of the biogas reference plant in Göss. Using the expertise in spent grain fermentation gained during the real operation of the Göss plant, we intend to focus our biogas activities more on the brewery sector. The life science division will also undergo dramatic development. Construction of the algae industrial plant is due to start in the second half of the year. So far, the sales offices in Turkey and France have not brought the desired success. Economic and political uncertainties are increasing in Turkey, the initial enthusiasm for renewable projects has evaporated almost entirely. We therefore intend to centralize the sales of biogas and will close both branches to reduce costs. The major biodiesel projects in Amsterdam and Croatia continue to be on hold. Currently, BDI does not expect any short-term revenues from these two projects. Page 5
