1 Eight page special edition GOING GLOBAL Edition 2013 IDP Education is proud to be here at Going Global Andrew Thompson Chief Executive Officer IDP Education Pty Ltd In line with this year s conference theme, Global education: knowledge-based economies for 21st century nations, Going Global provides us with an opportunity to share knowledge gained from our four decades of experience in international education. From our beginnings in 1969 as an aid organisation offering development assistance to South East Asian universities, we have grown into a multi-faceted education company, driven by our belief that learning and educational achievement is the best way to make a difference to the lives of young people. We are now a world leader in international student placement and each year we assist around 20,000 students gain entry into quality educational institutions in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. With 500 highly trained education counsellors based in 31 countries, we pride ourselves on placing students in the right country, right institution and right course that will maximise their opportunity to achieve their education goals. As a co-owner of IELTS, IDP Education is at the forefront of language assessment. Back in the 1980s when IDP Education was co-developing a new English language test (IELTS) with University of Cambridge ESOL and British Council, our aim was to develop a test to measure the English language skills of students entering universities in English speaking countries. A more general version of IELTS was developed soon after to meet the demand of knowledge economies for a test to measure the English language skills of people in the workplace or in more vocational training settings. Over the last twelve months both our student placement and IELTS businesses have experienced substantial growth in demand the Middle East, and we have responded by opening new IELTS test centres in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Libya, Jordan, Oman, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. For some time we ve provided IELTS testing for students and workers in Kuwait, Iran and Qatar. Today IDP s aim is to give people a greater choice of IELTS test centres, and, for those people also seeking to study abroad, we also offer our one-stop study abroad services. Last year we opened student placement offices in Egypt and Jordan, which presented new opportunities for us to promote IDP s services to a broader demographic of students looking to pursue an international education. During Going Global, representatives from IDP s Middle East team will be available for meetings at the IDP Education booth. I encourage you to stop by the IDP booth to discuss our recent activity and any possible opportunities for our organisations to work together for the benefit of tomorrow s international students.
