2 Five Campuses (Milano, Brescia, Piacenza-Cremona, Roma and Campobasso), 14 Colleges, 72 Three- Year Major Tracks (as established by a recent decree), 7 Graduate Level Degrees, 54 Specializations, 47 Master Tracks, and 59 Postgraduate Specialization Courses: such are the basic numbers characterizing the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Catholic University of the Sacred Heart), founded in 1921 by Father Agostino Gemelli and legally recognized by the Italian State on October 2 nd, During the University's distinguished history, there have been six University Presidents since Father Gemelli: Prof. Francesco Vito, Prof. Ezio Franceschini, Prof. Giuseppe Lazzati, Prof. Adriano Bausola, Prof. Sergio Zaninelli, and the current acting President Prof. Lorenzo Ornaghi. The Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is the most comprehensive and complete university in Italy among the universities awarding legally recognized degrees (Italian State Universities included). Our network of Cultural Development Centres extends as far as the Italian islands, making our University definitely national, with the value added of having it recognized by the international scientific community as well. At present the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is the largest non-state University in Europe as well as the widest Catholic University in the world. Thanks to its prestigious Faculties, the Università Cattolica excels in the diverse and articulate study opportunities that it offers, both in the humanities and in the scientific fields. Through the courses offered which are well combined with intensive research programmes, our University values and promotes an interdisciplinary approach that helps students gain scientific knowledge in a responsible and autonomous fashion. Our extensive research programmes are planned and carried out in close connection with the educational activities promoted by our 16 Internal Colleges, 64 Departments and 72 Research Centres. Their common goal is the understanding and studying of those topics that have proved vital to the wellness of each human being: the new frontiers of economics; bioethics; environmental recuperation; developments in the judicial fields; family dynamics; major mass phenomena; the evolution of political systems; new horizons in medicine; technological applications of physics and mathematics; and the most recent discoveries in environmental research. Opportunities for academic development and growth do not by any means end with the confirmation of degrees. Rather, they are continually enhanced through further chances available to alumni already entrenched in their own professional careers, by keeping them in contact with the more than 40,000 enrolled Cattolica students through extra curricular and postgraduate activities. The attention given to each individual student and his/her specific interests starts with enrollment and continues throughout and beyond the completion of a diploma or degree. In fact, if we manage - as we actually do to establish a strong tie between the university and the professional world, that is due exactly to the many services offered by the Università Cattolica, such as orientation activities; specialized tutoring labs specifically designed to accompany and guide students during their academic paths, internships and stages, study abroad and Erasmus programmes in European and non-european Countries; and job-placement services which help students select a future career. 4 THE AGOSTINO GEMELLI FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY The "Agostino Gemelli" Faculty of Medicine and Surgery was inaugurated in Rome on November 5 th, 1961 under the University First President Professor Francesco Vito. Also in attendance were the then Pontiff, Pope John XXIII, and the then Milan Archbishop, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini, who subsequently was to be elected Pontiff himself too as Pope Paul VI. Three years later, on July 10 th 1964, the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore became the first Italian University not only to introduce an enrollment cap, but also to open its own working hospital divisions managed under the name of the Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli ( A. Gemelli University Polyclinic & Teaching Hospital). Located at the feet of Monte Mario Hill, the Campus was built following strict Anglo-Saxon canons on land donated in 1934 by Pope Pious XI to the Istituto Giuseppe Toniolo di Studi Superiori ( Giuseppe Toniolo Institute for Higher Studies), an Institution which is the founder as well as the guarantor for the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. Those beautiful 37 hectars, situated next to the Parco Regionale del Pineto, are home to dormitories, libraries, specially equipped classrooms, a Church, sport and recreational facilities, and other student services. The "Istituti Biologici (Biological Institutes) is a big building where main student offices, teaching rooms for 1 st Cycle Medical Studies as well as Basic Science Institutes and the Aula Magna are located. The Campus includes the Residenza Sanitaria Protetta (Protected Health Residence), inaugurated in the jubilee year 2000, a modern and comfortable 43 room-hotel comprising a hemodialisys centre. A. 6 THE A. GEMELLI TEACHING HOSPITAL For over the last 40 years the Agostino Gemelli University Polyclinic (Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli ), a 1850-bed hospital, has been achieving a more and more increasing relevance both on a national and an international scale. At present, it serves as Teaching Hospital for the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. It owes its name to the University founder, the Franciscan Friar Father Agostino Gemelli. Construction began in 1959 on the hill of Monte Mario, then the Hospital opened its doors in July It provides free medical assistance as part of the Italian National Health System as well as paid-for "private" assistance in hotel-style wards. Besides, it includes facilities for Basic and Clinical Research, on-site Student Residences, three Canteens, three Cafeterias, one Restaurant, one Bookshop, and two Medical Libraries. At the Hospital it is carried out undergraduate and postgraduate education in: Medicine and Surgery; Nursing Sciences; Physiotherapy, and a great variety of other clinical subjects. Apart from Student Residences, the Hospital consists of the combined "Institute of Infectious Diseases" (Istituto di Clinica delle Malattie Infettive) & "Centre for the Medicine of Aging" (Centro di Medicina dell Invecchiamento), and of the main Hospital building (the "Polyclinic"), which was significantly expanded in recent years by the addition of a new wing where the Emergency Department & First Aid Post (DEA) as well as most operating theatres were transferred. Buildings are surrounded by parking lots and meadows. The original manorial villa erected long before the site was chosen to have the Hospital built in it and previously used as a convent - now serves as the Institute of Bioethics, as well as the main University Church. The A. Gemelli Hospital entered a worldwide spotlight during the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, who was rushed there to receive emergency surgery after the failed assassination attempt that he suffered in 1981, subsequently returning there several times up to a few weeks before his death in Another famous expatient of our Hospital is Georg Ratzinger, the elder brother of the current Pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI. 17 THE CONTINUING EDUCATION DEPARTMENT A NETWORK FOR CULTURE AND PROFESSIONS Today Continuing Education is seen as an integral part of the mission of major academic institutions in the Country. Incited by the increasing demand, many areas of society are placing on the need for increased knowledge and training. The Università Cattolica has been operating in this field since 1954, when its founder Father Agostino Gemelli promoted a residential Cultural Centre in Passo della Mendola. Then, in 1969 it was set up a real and proper structure which, being dedicated to professional training, over the years has developed a series of probably unique initiatives in the panorama of Italian universities. Today, the activities promoted by the Continuing Education Department of the Università Cattolica seize new opportunities created by technology and university development, offering them both to a general and a specific public such as students; newly graduates; professionals; teachers; social, health, and agricultural workers; volunteers; administrative and public officers; and bankers and IT technicians. THE UNIVERSITY FOURTEEEN FACULTIES AND THEIR SCIENTIFIC DEPARTMENTS Courses, Seminars and Conferences held by the Continuing Education Department contain development, research and didactics processes which evolve in the fourteen Faculties of our University, respecting the prestigious, dynamic characteristics for which it is well known and appreciated both in Italy and in the rest of the world. All Courses are guaranteed by the Professors who are in charge of the various Scientific Departments. A WIDESPREAD PRESENCE The Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is the only University in Italy which owns sites in five different cities (Milan, Rome, Brescia, Piacenza-Cremona and Campobasso) as well as thirteen Cultural Centres. Such an intricate network allows the Continuing Education Department to operate from anyone of the above-mentioned sites. CULTURAL CENTRES The Cultural Centres located in Acireale (CT), Benevento, Cemmo delle Vallecamonica (BS), Cosenza, Domodossola (VB), Lecce, Lucca, Monticello Brianza (LC), Ragusa, Sarzana (SP), Sestri Levante (GE), Taranto and Verona bear great importance. According to their own specifications, they encourage the scientific and cultural development of local communities and fully integrate themselves within the institutional network of the University. Thanks to those Cultural Centres students tangibly experience their own training programmes by linking up to the central site and interacting with it and its teachers through the support of local tutors. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AT THE SERVICE OF TRAINING The Continuing Education Department can count on the scientific richness of Faculties, Departments, Institutes, Research Centres and the University's Distant Learning Centre (Cep@d), as well as on the collaboration and partnership with State and private Bodies. PERMANENT AND DISTANCE LEARNING CENTRE (CEP@D) Cep@d operates in all the Università Cattolica sites. Its main objectives are: adapting technology to new in-class and distance learning methods; setting up new training projects for the university and the general market; and devising teaching methods for e-learning. Cep@d services are available both to the niversity - for adaptation to new technological developments and distance learning - and to the external market, offering its know-how and support or partnership in technological application to departments or institutions for planning and managing training programmes. 17

18 COURSES FOR TOP PROFESSIONALS The Continuing Education programmes of the Università Cattolica are specifically designed around various training needs and offer a complete and profitable induction course to the world of work as well as the chance to specialize in one s own profession. Courses on how to pass professional examinations such as qualifying examinations to become lawyers, notaries, barristers, etc. have been particularly popular in recent years. TUTORING One of the main attractions of the Università Cattolica Continuing Education Department is the presence of tutors whose task is to aid didactic development initiatives and insertion into the university environment. CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMMES IN ALL SUBJECTS The Continuing Education Department promotes courses, conferences, seminars, workshops, round tables and study days. Such initiatives are planned and held in collaboration with ministries, local authorities, health authorities, regional school authorities, companies, banks, cultural centres, editing houses, professional associations, and training centres. Courses focus on the following vocational and non vocational areas: Agri-Food Science Art, Theatre and Communications Banking and Finance Foreign Languages and Literatures Preparatory Courses for State Examinations Economics and Administration Law Information and Communication Technologies; New Technologies Education; Pedagogy Psychology Public Administration Health Social Services; Voluntary Services; Ethics Techno-Scientific Issues Humanities. 18

EDUCatt reserves rooms at different prices according to students income (for Exchange-students there is a special fare fascia B, i.e. 5,95-9,68 /day depending on whether the room is single or double as well as on the type of residence). However, the availability of places depends on the direct exchange with other Italian students leaving on an Erasmus programme during the same period. For this reason, all incoming EC students must submit their requests for accommodation at least 6 months before date of arrival. Address: L.go F. Vito, 1. Tel Office hours a.m. (Monday - Friday) Normally, during the week EDUCatt residences and affiliated ones admit arriving students in the morning and in the afternoon. Those who arrive in Rome outside reception hours or on weekends can ask the International Office for a list of cheap first - night places to stay (Servizi Didattici ed Accademici, - Tel ). Alternatively, private accommodation can be organized (average cost for a single room in Rome is 400/450 per month). Incoming students can ask the International Office for help, but they have to be flexible. The person in charge will try to find accommodation through different channels (student associations, contacts, etc.). Sometimes it is necessary for the student to arrange his/her private accommodation upon arrival; in this case, an inexpensive hotel in the University vicinities is suggested for the first few days. Internet Points All guest students have free access to the Internet Service from Monday to Friday (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.). Internet Point is at the Faculty of Economics, 2 nd floor.
