2 Professional Experience Strategic Communications Designed and executed critical/high-stakes, strategic communications campaigns targeting national, state and regional audiences, which included: identifying target audiences; developing and delivering effective messages to varying targets; media relations; crisis preparedness/management and public relations. Elevated Jim Hoffa to the national media s most covered spokesman of the American labor movement upon his election as Teamster president (following false portrayals of him as being tainted by mafia corruption as he campaigned for office). Directed coalition efforts and strategic communications elevating the national consciousness of the negative effects of trade on living standards through activities involving the 1999 World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting in Seattle. Created strategic messaging to raise the story line of the Teamsters labor contract covering 15,000 members who hauled new automobiles between production plants and dealerships to Reuters list of Top World Stories of the day. Developed and executed coordinated strategic communications programs to win public policy outcomes on issues including taxation, economic development, trade, education, transportation, environmental concerns, alcohol distribution and other issues. Strategic and Labor Leadership Bargained for multi-million dollar contracts effecting tens of thousands of employees across the US for national companies including UPS, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, MillerCoors, Anheuser-Busch, Danaher, BE Aerospace, Screen Gems Studios, YRC Transportation, Allied Automotive Group and other firms. Served as a team leader negotiating a multi-billion dollar collective bargaining agreement with Anheuser-Busch, setting compensation, healthcare, and retirement benefits for nearly 8,000 production employees at 12 locations across the US. Developed and led successful stakeholder engagement and mediation processes to resolve conflicts; settle and avoid strikes; and achieve mutually beneficial decisions, often finding common ground for parties engaged in complex circumstances, including UPS, Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors, Coke, Pepsi, Yellow Freight and Roadway Trucking.

3 Facilitated establishment of Project RISE, an anti-corruption program for the Teamsters that empowered former U.S. Justice Department organized crime fighters to investigate and rid the union of mob influence. Planned conferences and meetings designed to engage audiences, as large as thousands of participants, and motivated them to action on lobbying priorities and PAC giving. Directed major polling and stakeholder engagement programs to leverage positive results on policy issues including taxation, trade, education and other issues. Lobbying Coordinated strategic, integrated communications campaigns for national legislative and policy efforts, enhancing the union s powerful lobbying capacity. Initiated a state government program acquiring $8.5 million in funds during its first year to elevate 28,000 NC public school district employees above poverty wages (while securing the committed support of the Governor along with Senate and House leaders). Secured Governor s support for leveraging a national financial institution to supply more than $1 Billion in financing to a transportation firm under bankruptcy. Worked with Governor and company to establish on-site workplace skills training program for BE Aerospace that secured more than 100 manufacturing jobs for community. Achieved passage of labor-sponsored legislation in the NC General Assembly, at a time when the legislative majority is hostile to labor. Directed successful grassroots and grasstops lobbying campaigns on behalf of community, organization and coalition efforts to bring stakeholders together to impact policy. Successfully lobbied congress, state legislatures, and local governments, to influence bill and ordinance drafting as well as legislative developments on a wide range of issues. Political Action Helped establish the Obama campaign advance presence in NC during the state s critical 2008 primary contest, and provided strategic advice and support to the campaign through the general election and the 2012 efforts.

4 Established Obama 2008 voter outreach and GOTV command center in Charlotte and supplied personnel to critical voter outreach project that achieved direct contact with one in ten of all voters in the state. Established and supplied personnel to Obama 2012 Greensboro voter outreach and GOTV command center that made direct contact with more than 350,000 voters in the Piedmont Triad region of NC. Facilitated relationship building and communication between the Obama campaigns and various elected officials, interest groups, non-profits and community organizations. Developed and implemented a political action program (recognized by the Teamsters international headquarters as one of the top three programs of the union s 530 local affiliates) to build strategic relationships and align with legislative leaders and staff in order to create opportunities and support for vital initiatives. Partnered with business, donor and coalition partners in executing an independent expenditure program for legislative and judicial candidates. Served as spokesperson for campaign in Pennsylvania s 4th congressional district, garnering endorsement of candidate by all four major newspapers in the district. Established and executed strategic communications, direct mail, media relations and voter outreach efforts for state and local candidates. Guided strategic planning and execution of successful voter outreach efforts for local bond campaigns. Coalition Building Initiated creation of a 501(C)(4) table, representing a broad cross-section of progressive donors, business interests, community and non-profit groups including education, environment, women s assemblies, faith communities, civil rights, trial lawyers, consumer advocate, labor and other activists. (The group evolved into America Votes NC, an entity that raised $1.8 million in the 2012 election cycle.) Built powerful and diverse coalitions between government, corporate and stakeholder groups as well as international partnerships to positively impact contract negotiations and public policy decisions. Partnered with NC coalition groups in battling the Amendment 1 constitutional revision that narrowed LGBT rights and restricted civil unions by defining marriage as only occurring between a man and a woman.

5 Government Service Appointed by governor as one of five commissioners setting policy for the NC Employment Security Commission, which oversees the state s unemployment compensation system. Served, as an appointee of the Governor, on the NC Workforce Development Board, which plans and directs policy for training the state s emerging workforce. Provided communications, planning and public relations support to Inaugural Committee of President George H.W. Bush. Community Leadership Served as president of the board of trustees of Unity In Greensboro while increasing attendance and charitable giving among congregants at a time when the church operated without a minister, following her retirement. Recent Employment History International Representative, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Duties included providing representation and strategic support to the union s international headquarters, with a primary focus on contract negotiations, strategic communications and lobbying on important public policy issues. Legislative and Communications Director, Teamsters Local 391, Duties included strategic guidance for one of the largest Teamster affiliates on the East Coast, with specific focus in the areas of program development and member engagement involving legislative initiatives, issue advocacy and political campaigns, including independent expenditure programs. Communications Director, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Directed all public relations for the 1.4 million-member International Brotherhood of Teamsters, including: research, message development, strategic media relations and outreach, crisis communication, and public policy issues management. Consulting, CR Communications, Served business and labor clients with communications, media relations and collateral needs.
