Update on Online Duke Projects: Academic Year Lynne O Brien and Quentin Ruiz- Esparza Last Updated: April 12, 2016 Over the academic year, Online Duke and its partners in the Center for Information Technology, the Office of Information Technology, and Duke University Libraries have supported faculty experimentation with online learning. This brief highlights faculty projects over the past 9 months and planned projects in the near future. Summary of the Past 9 Months (July 2015 March 2016) Planning online education projects with a global focus Provost Sally Kornbluth, the Office of Global Strategy and Programs, and Online Duke invited faculty members to apply for support to use online technologies to add a global component to their teaching ( 2015/). We received 37 brief statements of interest and asked nine of those to develop full proposals. The six shown below were awarded funding and staff support. Project Instructor(s) Dept. Description Global Health Research Design and Methods Eric Green Global Health Creating online modules for use in Duke global health courses, DGHI global partner sites. Possible link to DGHI certificate program. Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Queen Utley- Smith Nursing Creating online course that will be used by Duke and DKU students. Advanced Global Health Epidemiology Joseph Egger Global Health Creating online modules for use in Duke global health courses, DGHI global partner sites. Possible link to DGHI certificate program. Global Environmental Health Problems: Principles and Case Studies Junfeng Zhang Environ. Sciences & Policy Creating online course for environment and global health students at Duke, DKU, and potentially Peking University Infectious Diseases Epidemiology in Global Settings Wendy O'Meara; Matthew Rubach; Gayani Tillekeratne Global Health; Medicine Revising online course for MScGH students at Duke and DKU, as well as learners at DGHI African partner sites. The Art and Archaeology of Ancient Athens Sheila Dillon Art, Art History & Visual Studies Developing online modules and student engagement activities to link students at Duke and a Greek university. 1
We offered consulting, training and planning assistance for an additional 15 projects without requiring full proposals. Of those 15: 1 received a Center for Instructional Technology (CIT) Jump Start grant. 1 was funded by Trinity College. 1 became a test project for Duke Extend (the Duke pilot project using Open edx). 2 were connected to staff in OIT s media support group or other non- CIT resources. 3 did not want any assistance if they did not get full funding. 7 are still open and awaiting follow up meetings. The proposals received showed significant interest across campus in using online technologies to facilitate discussions and activities with external experts or classes. Another noticeable trend was the desire to share Duke education and research with international groups. Developing Coursera Specializations Won 2 Coursera RFPs. Duke won two awards in response to Coursera Requests for Proposals for Specializations in areas of high demand by learners. Coursera and Google provided Duke with production funding for a Java Programming Specialization. Coursera provided Duke with an advance on production costs for an Excel to MySQL Specialization. Strong demand for Specializations. This infographic provides a snapshot of enrollments in and components of two new Specializations we created in the fall: Both Specializations have had strong enrollments, received very positive student reviews and generated revenue beyond costs. The Excel to MySQL Specialization has been one of the top- enrolled Specializations across Coursera. Excel to MySQL: Analytic Techniques for Business Daniel Egger and Jana Schaich- Borg mysql Duke s New Specializations in Java Programming: An Introduction to Software Owen Astrachan, Robert Duvall, Drew Hilton, Susan Rodger java Business Metrics for Data- Driven Companies Mastering Data Analysis in Excel Data Visualization and Communication with Tableau Managing Big Data with MySQL Capstone project - Increasing Real Estate Management Profits: Harnessing Data Analytics Programming and the Web for Beginners Java Programming: Solving Problems with Software Java Programming: Arrays, Lists, and Structured Data Java Programming: Principles of Software Design Capstone project - Java Programming: a DIY version of Netflix and Amazon recommendation engines 2
Innovating with Coursera. Duke faculty have experimented with new features on Coursera, from automated cohorts (where a new cohort of students starts the course every 2-4 weeks) to a pilot project where students can pay for tutoring. Financial aid. Anyone can access the materials in the Specialization courses for free. To receive grades on work and a certificate, individuals must pay a course fee or apply to Coursera for financial aid. Twenty- nine percent of students in the Excel to MySQL specialization and 41% of students in the Java Programming specialization received financial aid from Coursera. Creating Open Online Courses Online Duke worked with faculty to develop 4 new Coursera courses. Coursera Course Instructor Dept. Description Oil & Gas Industry Operations and Markets Lincoln Pratson Earth & Ocean Sciences First of two courses that provide a technical, business and societal understanding of the world s current energy system. Learners completed creative assignments and collective art projects. Held online and in- person events for discussion on socially engaged art. Planned use in campus course. Supporting Innovation in Campus Courses and Programs Online Duke worked with faculty and campus programs to create and revise online learning resources for Duke campus students. Project Instructor(s) Dept. Nurse as Scholar Course Redesign Social Entrepreneurship Online Modules Anthony Dren; Sophia Smith Catherine Clark Nursing Fuqua Online Duke and its partners evaluated this online nursing course and developed recommendations for improving the user experience and engagement. Online Duke and its partners gave pedagogical, ed tech, and assessment consulting for building online modules for entrepreneurs in Africa and South Asia. 3
Converting Session- Based Coursera Courses to On- Demand In Fall 2015, Coursera announced that it is closing its session- based platform by April After April, all courses will use the on- demand platform. For Duke faculty who want to move their courses to Coursera s new platform, Duke is converting (and in some cases revising) the earlier version. Online Duke completed 3 on- demand conversions this year, and has begun to test and evaluate Duke Extend as an alternative for session- based courses. Duke s Introduction to Human Physiology and Challenges of Global Health courses were moved to an on- demand format last year. Coursera Course moved on- demand Instructor(s) Dept. Online Duke has an additional 30 educational projects in development that will launch between April 2016 and January Data Science Specialization (5 courses). Mine Çetinkaya- Rundel, working with colleagues in the Department of Statistical Science, will convert her 10- week MOOC into three shorter MOOCs, develop a fourth course on Bayesian Statistics (a specific field for which Duke is well- known), and create a capstone project. The Specialization will start in April New Coursera Courses. Duke is helping faculty develop 5 new Coursera courses: New Online Courses for 2016 Coursera Course Instructor Dept. Duke is converting 12 existing online courses to the new on- demand platform, including revising Walter Sinnott- Armstrong s and Ram Neta s 12- week MOOC, Think Again: How to Reason and Argue, into 4 shorter courses and transforming Emma Rasiel s Behavioral Finance course into a Coursera course. 5
Organic Chemistry Modules. Online Duke is collaborating with the Department of Chemistry to complete the faculty s online modules on organic chemistry, which will be used to provide Duke students standardized course lessons that they can study at- their- own- pace. Online Modules for Global Health Course. Online Duke is providing post- production support for DGHI faculty creating videos for an online course. Online Duke will also help the faculty evaluate and revise this course in a separate project (see Infectious Diseases course project on page 1). 6 Global Online Education Projects. Duke will support 6 new online education projects that were selected through the CFP for Global Online Education projects, described on page 1.
