It examines human resources functions, including: job descriptions and specifications, recruitment and hiring, orientation and training programs, compensation and benefits, labor relations, and managing human resources in a global environment. Students will learn the details of human resources management in hospitality by studying chapters, completing related assignments and quizzes, and participating in online discussions. COURSE GOALS: After reading and studying the text, participating in lectures, and analyzing case studies, students who have successfully completed the course should be able to: 1. Describe the theoretical aspects and practical applications of human resources leadership and supervision in the hospitality industry; 2. Identify the functions of hospitality human resources leadership and supervision; and 3. Recognize the main elements of supervision in the hospitality industry. COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course is designed to educate students who are majoring in hospitality and earning a hospitality management degree about the importance of the human resources department in the hospitality industry. The competencies acquired include a detailed learning of the various natures of the human resources functions and their relationship to supervision within the hospitality industry. This course also continues to expose students to the University Core, which includes the Pillars of Intellectual Engagement. The Pillars of Intellectual Engagement express the qualities every student graduating from USFSM should be able to demonstrate - they are critical thinking, communication, ethics, leadership, community engagement, and diversity. BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT MISSION STATEMENT: The Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management in the College of Hospitality and Technology Leadership at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee prepares graduates for global leadership positions in the hospitality industry through foundational knowledge of hospitality operations and experiences that develop critical thinkers who promote diversity, ethical responsibility, lifelong learning, and community engagement. BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES (PLOs): 1. Identify and apply business concepts and skills relevant to the operational areas of hospitality management. 2. Describe the relationship between human resources managers and operations managers in the hospitality industry; (Aligns with PLOs 1, 2, 3,4, & 5) TEXT AND MATERIALS: The required textbook for this course is: Raymond A. Noe, John R. Hollenbeck, Barry Gerhart, and Patrick M. Wright Fundamentals of Human Resource Management, 5 th Edition, McGraw-Hill. ISBN: A copy of this textbook is on reserve in the Information Commons for students to borrow for up to 3 days throughout the semester. A suggested supplemental textbook for this course is: John R. Walker and Jack E. Miller Supervision in the Hospitality Industry, John Wiley & Sons, Inc. ISBN: Canvas USE: You must have an active Canvas account and it must be active before the first day of class. The class syllabus, materials, assignments, and quizzes are posted in Canvas, an online course management system. In this class Canvas will be used to administer the course, including: announcements, grading, lectures, discussion boards, assignments, and quizzes. It is your responsibility to complete all work and to check for any class announcements by utilizing the Canvas course site. Information on how to use Canvas is available at: Other sources for assistance are the toll-free hotline, (866) or the live online help site: The course structure in Canvas is by Modules (accessed on the left side of the course). You should begin the course with the Getting Started module for information about the course, the syllabus, the course calendar, and various USFSM services available to you. There is a module for each week of the semester that will contain the lecture slides, assignments, and quizzes for that particular week. For example, the Week 1 module has the lecture slides on Chapter 1, the video introduction assignment, the Taj Mahal case study assignment, and Quiz #1 on the syllabus. Weekly modules will become available ten (10) days prior to the module due date at EST. For example, the Week 2 module will open on January 15, 2016 at EST and the assignments and quizzes are due January 25, 2016 at EST. The exception will be for Week 1, which will be due Tuesday, January 19 th at EST due to the holiday on Monday, January 18th. WORKING WITH TECHNOLOGY: Please note that due to the online nature of the class, we will be utilizing technology. Therefore, it is very important for you to know that you cannot rely on technology to function properly all of the time. To prevent any problems, always complete and submit your assignments well before they are due. If you leave these to the last minute, problems may arise such as an Internet connection going down, website not working, etc. and these are not excuses for not completing the work. In addition, the instructor will use the class list from time to time to communicate with you outside of class. Therefore, it is critical for you to check your USF Account on a daily basis. 3 A GUIDE TO NETIQUETTE 1) Act Professionally When You Communicate When you are interacting in an electronic environment as a member of a class, you are subject to the same rules of courtesy and conduct that you would find in any face-to-face environment. Please treat your instructors and fellow students with respect and in a professional manner. Address others respectfully; do not use hey. If it is an instructor, the use of Professor or Dr. as appropriate before the instructor s last name should be followed. For fellow classmates, the use of their first names is appropriate. Proofread and check the spelling. While online communication is more relaxed, it is not careless communication. Doing a quick proof of your work before you send it may alleviate the need to clarify your posting and save you some time and potential embarrassment. Be aware of copyright and fair use law; do not plagiarize and cite your information. Do not use abbreviations, emojis, or shorthand (for example the use of u instead of you ) as you would in texting. Respect others' thoughts and ideas. Be constructive in challenging different views and explain where you disagree and why within the rules of "netiquette." Be clear with your words. It is easy for someone to misinterpret your meaning. Remember that they cannot see your expressions or hear the tone of your voice. Be careful when using sarcasm and humor. Without face-to-face communications your comments may be misinterpreted (remember that the majority of what is communicated is through non-verbal means and this is missing with written communication). 2) Appropriate use of and Discussion Boards You are expected to communicate in a professional manner. communication should be courteous and respectful in manner and tone. Do not send s that are casual or demanding. Please include the course number (HFT 4221) in the subject line of the . Please use a proper greeting in your . For example, Dear Dr. Gordon for your professor and a first name for your classmates. Use the subject line effectively by using meaningful subject titles. Do not send chain mail and/or spam to others. Please do not expect an immediate response via (typical response time will be within two business days). If your question is sent at the last minute (e.g. shortly before an assignment is due) it may not be possible to send you a response before the due time. Remember that on the discussion boards you are writing to a group. Discussion board communication should be courteous and respectful in manner and tone. Group and discussion board posts are public conversations; therefore do not post anything personal. If you need to reply or respond to only one person, please do so privately. Any personal issues, related to the course, or confidential issues, should be directly communicated to the course instructor. Such items should not be posted on the public course discussion forum. 4 GRADING, EVALUATION AND ATTENDANCE POLICIES: Grades are issued based on the total grades earned for discussion board posts, assignments, and quizzes. Grades will not be negotiated or curved. This means you should invest time in preparing for and submitting your best effort on all assigned work. Since this is an upper-level college course, you are expected to write in a scholarly manner using proper grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. Research sources are to be properly cited using APA format. Specific instructions for each assignment will be posted on Canvas. Discussion posts and responses, assignments, and quizzes submitted late will receive no credit. The tables below show the percentage worth of each course component towards your final grade and the grade cutoffs that will be used for this course. For weeks 2, 4, 7, 11, and 14, a question will be posted on the course discussion board on Canvas. Each student must post one (1) answer to the question and at least one (1) substantive comment on two (2) other students posts for a minimum total of three (3) posts for those weeks, each of which will be worth 20 points. Please ensure you maintain professionalism and respect for the class in your videos and discussion board posts and responses just as you would in a face-to-face classroom. See the section regarding netiquette on pages 2 and 3 of the syllabus for more information. Interview Assignment 50 points For week 6, there is an interview assignment to complete, which is worth 50 points. This assignment involves partnering with another student in the class. The assignment requires face-to-face interaction, which may be conducted in person or by using video conferencing technology such as FaceTime, Skype, Google Hangout, or another video conferencing technology of your choice. While the assignment requires partnership, each student must complete his/her own assignment and submit it via the assignment on Canvas. Each student will assume the role of the interviewer and the interviewee, so the interview will be conducted twice so that everyone experiences both roles. Instructions for the assignment and the word document to complete may be found in the assignment on Canvas. Pairs will be assigned if students do not self-select. Partner Assignments 50 points For week 3, there is an ethical assignment to complete, which is worth 25 points. This assignment will be done in pairs (if there is an odd number of students in the class one group may be a group of three). Ideally the assignment should involve some face-to-face interaction, which can be conducted in person or by using video conferencing technology. However, for the purpose of this assignment, it is not required. The assignment will be submitted as a group assignment, though, so it is necessary for students to work together to complete the assignment. The assignment is the completion of the Thinking Ethically assignment in Chapter 13 on page 92. USFSM HFT Syllabus Page 4

5 For week 9, there is a small research assignment to complete, which is worth 25 points. This assignment will be done in pairs (if there is an odd number of students in the class one group may be a group of three). Ideally the assignment should involve some face-to-face interaction, which can be conducted in person or by using video conferencing technology. However, for the purpose of this assignment, it is not required. The assignment will be submitted as a group assignment, though, so it is necessary for students to work together to complete the assignment. The assignment is the completion of the Experiencing HR assignment in Chapter 10 on page 332. You may work with the same person for both assignments or you may work with different people. You will need to self-select into groups on Canvas for each assignment. Pairs will be assigned if students do not self-select. Case Studies 100 points For weeks 1, 5, 8, 12, and 15 there will be a case study to complete, each worth 20 points. The cases and questions come from the textbook at the end of the chapter for the week for which they are assigned. While you are required to address all of the questions asked in the case, your response should be structured as a one-page essay instead of answering each question separately. Your grade will be based on the content of your ideas, your communication through writing, your ability to critically analyze the problem and provide solutions, and the writing criteria of using proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure and citing any additional sources utilized by using APA format. You are strongly encouraged to visit the writing centers on either the Sarasota or Tampa campuses for help to improve your submissions. Please see the grading rubric for the case studies on Canvas. Team Project (Paper and Video Presentation) 250 points You will be working in pre-assigned teams to prepare a report on innovative recruiting methods for the Human Resources Management Team at The Resort at Longboat Key Club. Dr. Gordon will randomly assign students to teams. Details of the expected format will be provided on Canvas. A project idea outline is due on Monday, March 7 th at EST and is worth 10 points. A draft of the paper is due on Monday, April 11 th at EST and is worth 40 points. The final paper and video presentation are due on Monday, May 2, 2016 at EST and are each worth 100 points. Quizzes 425 points There will be a quiz every week (except weeks 10 and 15) for a total of fourteen (14) quizzes worth. Quiz #1 is on the syllabus and will be worth 22 points. Quizzes #2 - #13 will be worth 31 points each and will include true/false, multiple-choice, and short-answer questions based on the textbook chapters and PowerPoint lectures. You will have one attempt and 45 minutes to complete each of the quizzes. You may refer to the PowerPoint lectures, the textbook, and your notes, but as the quizzes are timed, this may preclude you from completing the entire quiz. Therefore, you are strongly advised to BE PREPARED before you take each quiz in order to minimize referencing PowerPoint lectures, the textbook, and your notes. Late Work Late work will not be accepted. The availability of each discussion board, case study, quiz, and exam will be made available ten (10) days prior to the due date and will expire at EST the Monday following the week of the assignment. For example, all required work for week one (1) is due at EST on January 18, Please plan accordingly and work ahead if needed. Computer glitches, Internet problems, working from a different time zone, traveling, not being able to access a computer, etc. are NOT excuses for not completing work on time. Disputing a Grade Each student has 48 hours after receiving a grade to dispute the actual grade. Therefore, it is not acceptable to wait until March to dispute a grade from February. Any changes to the schedule will be announced in class or through Canvas. **NOTE: The last day to drop the course with a W is Saturday, March 26, 2016 (fees may apply). USFSM HFT Syllabus Page 5

6 USFSM AND USF SYSTEM POLICIES Policies are available in the USFSM Catalog and at regulationspolicies.usf.edu. A. Academic Dishonesty: The University considers any form of plagiarism or cheating on exams, projects, or papers to be unacceptable behavior. Please review the USF System Regulation USF3.027 Academic Integrity of Students and the USF System Regulation USF Student Code of Conduct. B. Academic Disruption: The University does not tolerate behavior that disrupts the learning process. Please review USF System Regulation USF3.025 Disruption of Academic Policy. C. Contingency Plans: In the event of an emergency, it may be necessary for USFSM to suspend normal operations. During this time, USFSM may opt to continue delivery of instruction through methods that include but are not limited to: Canvas, online conferencing/collaboration tools, messaging, and/or an alternate schedule. It is the responsibility of the student to monitor Canvas for each of their classes for course specific communication, as well as the USFSM website, their student account, and MoBull messages for important general information. The USF hotline at 1 (800) is updated with pre-recorded information during an emergency. See the Campus Police Website for further information. D. Disabilities Accommodation: Students are responsible for registering with the Office of Students with Disabilities Services (SDS) in order to receive academic accommodations. Reasonable notice must be given to the SDS office (typically 5 working days) for accommodations to be arranged. Fire Alarm Instructions: At the beginning of each semester please note the emergency exit maps posted in each classroom. These signs are marked with the primary evacuation route (red) and secondary evacuation route (orange) in case the building needs to be evacuated. See Emergency Evacuation Procedures. F. Religious Observances: USFSM recognizes the right of students and faculty to observe major religious holidays. Students who anticipate the necessity of being absent from class for a major religious observance must provide notice of the date(s) to the instructor, in writing, by the second week of classes. Instructors canceling class for a religious observance should have this stated in the syllabus with an appropriate alternative assignment. G. Protection of Students Against Discrimination and Harassment: 1. Sexual Misconduct/Sexual Harassment Reporting: USFSM is committed to providing an environment free from sex discrimination, including sexual harassment and sexual violence (USF System Policy 0-004). 2. Other Types of Discrimination and Harassment: USFSM also is committed to providing an environment free from discrimination and harassment based on race, color, marital status, sex, religion, national origin, disability, age, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, or veteran status (USF System Policy 0-007). The Counseling and Wellness Center is a confidential resource where you can talk about incidents of discrimination and harassment, including sexual harassment, gender-based crimes, sexual assault, stalking, and domestic/relationship violence. This confidential resource can help you without having to report your situation to either the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (OSSR) or the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Equal Opportunity (DIEO), unless you request that they make a report. Please be aware that in compliance with Title IX and under the USF System Policy, educators must report incidents of discrimination and harassment, including sexual harassment, gender-based crimes, sexual assault, stalking, and domestic/relationship violence. If a student discloses any of these situations in class, in papers, or to a faculty member personally, he or she is required to report it to OSSR or DIEO for investigation. Students who are victims or who have knowledge of such discrimination or harassment are encouraged to report it to either OSSR or DIEO.
