Casa d arte Futurista Depero Rovereto 2 mart.trento.it/casadepero In the heart of medieval Rovereto, the Casa d Arte Futurista Depero, the branch of the Mart, is the only museum founded by a Futurist. Known as La Casa del Mago (The Magician s House), after Fortunato Depero, it exhibits about 3,000 objects bequeathed by the artist to the town, including paintings, drawings, tarsia in cloth and buxus, collages, posters and flyers, furniture, toys and objects of applied art. Galleria Civica di Trento Trento 3 mart.trento.it/galleriacivica The doors open again at the Galleria Civica di Trento, with enriched collections and the expertise of the Mart. Experimentation, innovation, 19 th and 20 th century art up to the contemporary period, restyled and reinterpreted through projects, ideas, visions and international modern forms of expression. Galleria Civica Segantini Arco 4 museoaltogarda.it An entire space is dedicated to the artist Giovanni Segantini of Arco, with an exhibition tour that complements the activities of the MAG, Museo Alta Garda, ( page 18) illustrating and paying tribute to the work, biography, photos and words of Segantini. The Galleria Civica Segantini has also set up educational workshops for schools. 5
8 Sacred art Stone worked by skilled stonemasons shows evidence of early Christianity in the Alps, and enormous medieval and late medieval frescoes by dynasties of itinerant painters. Not to mention the large cycles that teach followers precepts and biblical passages or represent the particularly important moments of a community. Museums, churches, capitals, monasteries, chapels and tabernacles offer an extraordinary heritage of sacred art just waiting to be discovered, always with something new. The close relationship is shown between religion and man, as well as the work of extraordinary artists.
10 Museo Diocesano Tridentino Trento 5 museodiocesanotridentino.it The museum is situated in the ancient and central Palazzo Pretorio, the residence of the Prince Bishop from the Late Middle Ages. Today, it houses a precious exhibition of furniture, sculptures, paintings, Flemish tapestries, as well as traces of the Council of Trent. Do not miss the guided tour of the adjoining Torre di Piazza, the archaeological sites of Porta Veronensis, the Early Christian Basilica of San Vigilio and Palazzo Libera at Villa Lagarina. 11 Santuario di San Romedio Coredo 6 visitvaldinon.it Religion, art and legend are brought together in one place, surrounded by the powers of nature. On the rocky outcrop that houses the tomb of San Romedio, over the centuries, three small churches, two chapels and seven shrines of the Passion, connected by a flight of 131 steps, have all nestled. According to legend, children baptized in the river died because of a dragon until Saint Colomban killed it. 9

15 Museo Civico di Rovereto Rovereto 9 museocivico.rovereto.tn.it Paolo Orsi and Federico Halberr, born in 1851, were two of the greatest Italian archaeologists in the late 19 th century. Today, thanks to the Fondazione Museo Civico di Rovereto, the museum still has the dual role of preserving and enhancing the historical collections, as well as promoting the most advanced technological innovation. The many initiatives include the Rassegna Internazionale del Cinema Archeologico ( page 55). Museo Geologico delle Dolomiti Predazzo 10 muse.it The museum, nestled in the alpine landscape, offers over 100 years of history. It especially focuses on the geology of the Dolomites with special reference to the Valle di Fassa and Val di Fiemme, which it presents with extensive collections of samples. A permanent workshop with the evocative name of INvento focuses on educational and creative activities for children. Museo delle Palafitte del lago di Ledro Molina di Ledro 14 palafitteledro.it The museum, situated on the banks of Lake Ledro, houses many objects and utensils of the Bronze Age that help to explain life as it was 4,000 years ago and the everyday life of the nearby pile-dwelling village. Near the museum, the reconstruction of a pile-dwelling village can be seen, which is a popular setting for many educational and informative activities concerning ancient history. 21 Museo delle Palafitte di Fiavé Fiavé 15 trentinocultura.net/archeologia.asp An outstanding point of reference for discovering the history of the oldest farming communities in Europe. The excavations have thrown light on various types of housing that date back from 3800 BC to the last centuries of the second millenium BC. Everything is enhanced with videos, settings and reconstructions. Area Archeologica Acqua Fredda Passo del Redebus 16 trentinocultura.net/archeologia.asp Situated at an altitude of almost 1,500 metres, this archaeological site at Passo del Redebus, where the Pinè plateau meets the Valle dei Mòcheni, is where one of the most important prehistoric foundaries in the Alps can be found. Dating back to the late Bronze Age, it has nine smelting furnaces for copper working. 19
22 The Great War Hundreds of kilometres of mule tracks and trenches, dozens of strongholds and forts, posts, tunnels and barracks at the extreme altitudes of perennial glaciers, war cemeteries, large and small museums coordinated by the Trentino Grande Guerra network (trentinograndeguerra.it), as well as multimedia installations offering first-hand experience of the everyday life of soldiers. The Great War deeply left its mark on Trentino. Today, this province is a true open-air museum with its restorations and renovations that have transformed a unique historic heritage into an immense opportunity to understand, learn and reflect.
24 Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra Rovereto 17 museodellaguerra.it One of the most important in Italy, the museum exhibits weapons, uniforms, photos, paintings, documents and relics of the First World War, with a large space dedicated to artillery. Featuring an archive and a library, it promotes studies, research and temporary exhibitions, as well as educational workshops. On the occasion of the centenary of the Great War, the museum is collaborating with the Mart to set up the exhibition entitled La guerra che verrà non è la prima. Grande guerra ( page 4). Museo dell Aeronautica Gianni Caproni Trento 18 museocaproni.it Founded in the early 20 th century by the aviation pioneer Gianni Caproni of Trentino, the museum exhibits a permanent collection of historic aircraft, an extensive collection of documents, relics, as well as graphic, photographic and technological materials by well-known designers and Italian aviators. 25 Campana dei caduti Rovereto 19 fondazioneoperacampana.it The Bell of Peace, forged from the cannons of the First World War, was commissioned by the priest Don Antonio Rossaro after the war. It is the largest tolling bell in the world. Thanks to the Fondazione Campana dei Caduti, it is a place for reflection and projects focused on interaction between peoples. Every evening, the bell tolls a hundred times to send peace throughout the world. 26 Gallerie di Piedicastello Trento 21 museostorico.it The Gallerie, one white and one black, are two former road tunnels, dug under the Doss Trento, and the Mausoleum of Cesare Battisti. A surface area covering over 6,000 square metres has become an innovative and original exhibition centre run by the Fondazione Museo storico del Trentino. Forte Belvedere Gschwent Lavarone 22 fortebelvedere.org Built between 1908 and 1912 on a spur overlooking the Val d Astico, the fort had the role of preventing attempts to break through the Italian front and withstand heavy bombings. It had large storage depots, an aqueduct and a power station. Inside, visitors can find an attractive modern museum tour with a series of interactive installations, created by Studio Azzurro. 27 Forte Larino Lardaro 23 visitchiese.it L-shaped Fort Larino has a moat, a fortified courtyard, cannon holes, rifle slits and an attractive granite structure, all restored due to a successful renovation project. It was built in early 1860 to defend the road from Brescia. Forte Corno Praso 24 visitchiese.it The fort is one of the defence posts of the Valle del Chiese. It acted as a rampart with Forte Carriola and was part of the barrage of Lardaro. Built with rotating steel domes and armour for cannons, it was disarmed before the war. It has now been restored and recovered. 25
28 Forte cadine - Bus de Vela Trento 25 museostorico.it The road barricade, a bold and imposing building in pink limestone was one of the first permanent Austrian forts to defend Trento. The exhibition area inside has several multi-media installations and explanatory panels offering visitors the coordinates of the Great War and a complete overview of the fortification system of Trentino. Forte Strino Vermiglio 26 sulletraccedellagrandeguerra.it Built in the 19 th century, between 1860 and 1861, Forte Strino guarded the road from Vermiglio to Passo del Tonale. Disarmed during the Great War because it was inadequate, the fort was then seriously damaged by collectors of scrap weaponry. Today, thanks to a restoration project, it is an educational venue and exhibition area. 26
29 Forte Pozzacchio Pozzacchio - Trambileno 27 trentinograndeguerra.it The fort is a remarkable example of military engineering, carved into the rock. In a certain sense, it is unique and the forerunner of the Second World War underground bunkers. The fort, still incomplete when the war broke out, was intended to prevent any advance of Italian forces from the Pian delle Fugazze. Forte Nago Nago Torbole 28 gardatrentino.it The fort, situated to the south of the village of Nago, along the old road to Torbole, on a rocky spur jutting out towards Lake Garda, was built with two floors and a double line of cannon posts It now houses a restaurant. 27

The museum is situated in the ancient Prepositura Agostiniana in San Michele all Adige. It offers visitors an opportunity to be immersed in the lifestyles of the alpine peoples, to explore their work, art and crafts, as well as their cultural and religious forms of expression. 30
33 Ecomuseo Judicaria Ponte Arche 30 dolomiti-garda.it This ecomuseum covers a land rich in history, culture and traditions, with ancient farming villages, some belonging to I Borghi più belli d Italia (The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy) club. They are testimony of prehistoric settlements and castles; a land characterised by Mediterranean and alpine nature. Ecomuseo della Val di Peio Piccolo Mondo Alpino Celentino di Peio 31 linumpeio.it This ecomuseum is known as the Piccolo Mondo Alpino but not by chance, as it is situated in a valley surrounded by a mountain range called the Gruppo Ortles Cevedale in the Stelvio National Park. Seven villages have their own identities. The last Caseificio Turnario (cheese factory) of Trentino can still be found here. Ecomuseo del Vanoi Canal San Bovo 32 ecomuseo.vanoi.it Seven themes allow visitors to discover the rural and mountain identity of this very special remnant of Trentino: its water, religious traditions, subsistence farming, grass, wood, stone and war. Visitors can find much evidence of the First World War and an attractive exhibition tour at the Museo della Grande Guerra in Caoria. 31
34 Ecomuseo del Lagorai Telve Valsugana 33 ecomuseolagorai.eu The Lagorai is, perhaps, still the most mysterious mountain range in Trentino. The ecomuseum is situated on its southern side, covering an area that includes the municipalities of Carzano, Telve, Telve di Sopra and Torcegno. Here there are not only meadows and pastures but also valuable crops and the WWF Oasis of Valtrigona. Ecomuseo del Tesino Terra di viaggiatori Pieve Tesino 34 The identity of this land appears to be closely linked to travel: the area includes part of the Via Claudia Augusta Altinate Roman road. The local inhabitants made travelling their work by becoming renowned pedlars who travelled on foot throughout Europe. Here you can visit the Casa Museo di Alcide De Gasperi. 32
35 Ecomuseo della Valsugana Strigno 35 ecovalsugana.net The ecomuseum covers the eastern area of the Valsugana. Its identity is enhanced with a series of tours that draw on family histories and the testimony of the relationship between man and the local area. These include the Rava aqueduct, the Valsugana railway line and forest management. Ecomuseo dell Argentario Civezzano 36 ecoarge.net The ecomuseum, established to promote the Monte Calisio area near Trento, offers tours and informative materials for discovering local history, silver mining, the landscape and human activities. 33
36 Ecomuseo della Valle del Chiese Condino 37 ecomuseovalledelchiese.it The ecomuseum is situated in south-western Trentino along the ancient route that connects Lombardy to the alpine world of Trentino. Armies, traders and itinerant painters and artists have all taken this route. The ecomuseum explains all this to visitors along the routes entitled: History and Art, Nature and Flavours. 37 Istituto Culturale Mòcheno Bernstoler Kulturinstitut Palù del Fersina 39 bernstol.it Founded to enhance and promote the culture and language of the German-speaking community of the Mòcheni, the institute is responsible for historical and ethnographic research, setting up temporary exhibitions and managing the museums in the local area. It promotes the use of the spoken and written Mòcheno language in all fields of society. Centro Documentazione Luserna dokumentationszentrum Lusèrn Luserna 40 lusern.it The Documentation Centre preserves the history and culture of the Cimbri community of Luserna. Every year, the centre successfully organises and promotes important exhibitions, research, conferences and publications. One of the subjects examined is the Great War, which severely affected the Cimbri people and their land. 35
38 Castles Whichever direction you take to arrive in Trentino, you will find a castle to welcome you. Imposing crenellated walls, high and sometimes daring locations, square shapes blending in with elegant Renaissance lines. Castles are testimony of a land used as a crossroads for travel, the essential link between kingdoms, worlds and cultures. They have changed over time from mainly military use to centres of power, and later residences. Today, they are treasure troves of objets d art, weapons and furnishings that recount the history and atmospheres of bygone eras.
40 Castello del Buonconsiglio Trento 41 buonconsiglio.it Founded in the mid-13 th century as a military fort, the castle gradually expanded and became a noble residence and home to the Prince Bishops of Trento. Its decorations, architecture and extraordinary frescoes are of great interest. Today, it is the most important historical and artistic monument in Trentino and a major museum. Castel Thun Vigo di Ton 42 castelthun.it An elegant example of the civil and military castle architecture of Trentino, Castel Thun is highly important as a splendid noble residence, which has preserved its original atmosphere and furnishings, and because its history is linked to the entire region and its name to the oldest and most prestigious families in Central Europe. 41 Castel Beseno Besenello 43 buonconsiglio.it Castel Beseno is the largest fortified complex in Trentino. Of medieval origin, it was used for defence due to its strategic position and its solid walls. This genuine floating ship, overlooking the Vallagarina, is a now museum that hosts cultural events and historical re-enactments. Castello di Stenico Stenico 44 castelstenico.it Perched on a rock overlooking the Giudicarie region, the castle looks austere and impressive. It had the task of guarding this area of Trentino for the Prince Bishops, but it soon became a noble residence. Its interior houses sculpted decorations, fine frescoes, refined furniture and utensil collections. 39
42 Castello di Rovereto Rovereto 45 museodellaguerra.it The castle, which houses the Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra ( page 22), owes its current appearance to the alterations made by the Venetians. Since spring 2014, its recently restored towers and underground passages host an important collection of modern-age weaponry. Castello di Avio Sabbionara d Avio 46 fondoambiente.it Castello di Avio, a splendid medieval fort, is immediately visible when you arrive in Trentino from the south. Built by the Castelbarco family ten centuries ago, it has imposing walls, towers, a baronial mansion and an impressive keep. Its interior houses fine 14 th century frescoes showing scenes with knights and a court. 40
43 Castel Toblino Sarche 47 casteltoblino.com Echoes of fairies and ancient legends of prohibited love still resound in this charming 16 th century stronghold surrounded by the waters of the lake of the same name. Currently, the castle is privately owned and houses a restaurant. Castel Drena Drena 48 comune.drena.tn.it A medieval fort with a tower almost 30 metres high overlooks the road that connected the Sarca plain to the Valle di Cavedine, the only negotiable pass. Strongly contended, it changed hands from the Sejano lords to the Counts of Arco. The castle, now restored and refurbished, was destroyed in 1703 by French troops. Castello di Arco Arco 49 comune.arco.tn.it Perched at the top of an impressive rocky crag, the castle overlooks the town, and the Sarca plain. Inside, visitors can find the prison of stone, the great tower, the barbican and a splendid cycle of 14 th century secular frescoes depicting characters and scenes of court life. Rocca di Riva Riva del Garda 50 museoaltogarda.it Austere, yet elegant, Rocca di Riva is a rare example of a medieval fort situated in a town. Overlooking Lake Garda with its quadrangular plan, tall corner towers and entrance bridge, it houses the MAG ( page 18) which includes historical and archaeological testimony, as well as an extensive picture gallery. 41
44 Castello di Pergine Pergine Valsugana 51 castelpergine.it Situated overlooking the road leading to the Veneto plain, the castle appears to have always been a fort, but its current structure was built towards the 13 th century and it became the property of the dukes of Austria. Today, it is a hotel and restaurant, offering a glimpse of its boundary walls, keep, towers and residential buildings dating back to the Renaissance period. 42 Castello di San Giovanni Bondone 52 visitchiese.it The attractive castle is situated on a rocky spur overlooking Lake Idro. It is one of the historic mansions belonging to the Lodrón family, which up to the 13 th century mainly oversaw its military function, adapting its appearance over time.
