Date of production of specification September 2004 Updated for CF February Date of programme review 2016/ Educational aims of the programme The primary aims of the programme are to: provide learners with the range of skills required for the effective practice of medical ultrasound within their chosen field(s) of expertise further develop the student s ability to appraise and critically evaluate research findings to the benefit of diagnostic ultrasound. extend the students' critical evaluation, communication and self-management skills to a level appropriate for healthcare practitioners working in the field of ultrasound. equip the student with knowledge and skills to actively participate in appropriate clinical audit, research and development offer a forum for the exchange of information and ideas among participants with the intention of broadening their experience and enhancing their ability to work within the healthcare team.

Educational objectives of the programme/programme outcomes The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding and skills in the following areas: Generic objectives for all awards Knowledge and understanding The programme provides a knowledge and understanding of the following: 1. An in depth knowledge of the science of ultrasound underpinning clinical practice. 2. Advanced knowledge and understanding in practical, analytical and interpretative approaches to ultrasound. 3. The justification of the value, efficacy and appropriateness of ultrasound practice. 4. The professional, ethical and legal responsibilities of ultrasound professionals. 5. The principles, theories and concepts of ultrasound and the ways in which these are applied in practice. 6. The communication patterns and information needs of different user communities and the design of appropriate solutions to meet these needs. 7. Understand ethical issues and manage and resolve ethical dilemmas Knowledge and understanding are acquired through formal lectures, tutor-led and student-led seminars, tutorials, practical workshops, use of a variety of information and communication technologies and reading and reflection and other independent learning activities. These teaching and learning methods are designed to foster the ability of students to become effective ultrasound professionals. To do so they must understand and apply professional principles and standards, to be able to think and act independently, and begin to identify their continuing professional development needs. Assessment: Points 1-7 are formatively and summatively assessed by a number of methods including in-class activities, coursework assignments, and written examinations Intellectual skills: 8. Application of professional, practical and theoretical skills appropriate to the clinical situation 9. Critical appraisal of the available technology and associated parameters. 10. Evaluation and reflection on own practice 11. Analysis and evaluation of information and evidence for safe ultrasound practice 12. Able to engage with peers through reflecting on own and others practice in order to improve own/others practice. Skills and other attributes Skills are learnt through a series of keynote lectures, practical demonstrations, video case studies & scenarios plus clinical placement experience. Assessment: Points 8-12 are formatively and summatively assessed by a number of methods including group presentations, coursework assignments and reflective diaries

4 Practical Skills: 13. Acquire practical clinical skills in order to become a safe, competent practitioner. 14. Safe and appropriate operation of the technology available 15. Critical evaluation of the organization in terms of the patient care and the quality of service provided. Clinical practice is undertaken in a department where a supervisor/mentor guides the student through the attainment of the required practical skills. This learning experience is supplement by practical tutorials on the simulators. Assessment: Points are assessed through course work and the development of the critical portfolio. Point 13 is assessed through formative and summative evaluation of ultrasound competency. Generic/transferable skills: 16. Structure and communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing; 17. Assessment Points are tested and evaluated through assessed coursework and formative assessments. Activities include self assessment, workshops, report writing, oral presentations, proposal construction and writing and group projects. Additional objectives for Postgraduate Diploma The programme provides a knowledge and understanding of the following: 22. A critical understanding of the wider application of research methods to ultrasound. 23. Mastery of a range of clinical techniques within ultrasound 24. Advanced skills in giving and receiving constructive feedback. Knowledge and understanding are acquired through formal lectures, tutor-led and student-led seminars, tutorials, practical workshops, use of a variety of information and communication technologies and reading and reflection and other independent learning activities. Assessment: Points are assessed by coursework assignments and written examinations. Intellectual Skills: 25. The knowledge and skills to actively participate in appropriate clinical audit, research and development Skills are learnt through a series of keynote lectures, practical demonstrations, video case studies & scenarios plus clinical

Assessment: Point 25 is formatively and summatively assessed by a number of methods including group presentations, coursework assignments and reflective diaries Practical skills: 26. Critically evaluate literature to identify key themes, concepts and evidence of worth. 27. Acquire practical clinical skills in a second clinical area. Specific teaching and learning of methods used to enable outcomes to be achieved include: presentations and seminars, lectures, peer observation, simulation, mentoring and supervision, independent study, supervised projects. Compensation is permitted, but only within the assessments for an individual module provided no mark for any element of assessment falls below 45%, and not between modules. The percentage weighting for the calculation of merit and distinction will directly reflect the proportion of credits allocated to each module in relation to the overall credit taken within each programme/award, with classification thresholds set according to the core scheme as set out in the Credit Framework Regulations of King s College London.
