2 Cerritos College hosts middle school summer math/science academy Cerritos College hosted middle school students from the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District in a Summer Math/Science Academy from June 27 to 30. The college's award-winning teacher training program Teacher TRAC and Pathway Programs partnered with California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) and Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District to offer the Academy to address both math/science preparation and increase the pipeline of qualified math and science teachers and health professionals. For one week, 48 middle school GATE students in the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District attended the math and science curricular enrichment program. The students participated in hands-on, interactive, inquiry based activities which aimed to strengthen their preparations and motivation to continue pursuing a background in math and/or science. Lead professors for the Academy included teachers from the school district and Cerritos College faculty members. Two of the lead professors, Patty Buchanan and Tami Francis were Teacher TRAC graduates. The Academy also offered an invaluable professional development opportunity for pre-service teachers, local teachers, and college professors. Five Cerritos College prospective teachers participated as assistant professors in the Academy. They worked alongside lead professors and facilitated small group explorations and labs. During the workshops, the prospective teachers get the classroom experience and the opportunity to work with students from all backgrounds. Pamela Romero,11, said that she enjoys what she's learning. Even though this is the first time she's been exposed to physics, she said she is not intimidated by it, because the instructors teach through activities and experimentation. "This is nothing like what we learn in class," Romero said. "The teacher has us do workshops and experiments which help us learn and keeps our attention; it's fun." The summer enrichment program was funded by CSULB College of Education, Teacher TRAC and Pathway Programs to address the need to close the achievement gap in math and science by creating new credential pathways. -MORE- 2

3 Cerritos College partners with CSULB to provide dedicated, talented individuals to the field of K- 12 education. As a student in the integrated, standards-based Teacher TRAC / CSULB program, students can earn their bachelor's degree and multiple subject teaching credentials and complete their student teaching within four years. 4 Cerritos College Child Development Center receives a grant to plant fruit trees The fruit trees will teach children agriculture, nutrition, and science NORWALK, Calif. - July 12, Healthy living is taking root in the garden of the Child Development Center at Cerritos College. The Cerritos College Child Development Center is pleased to announce that it was awarded Jamba Juice's It's All About the Fruit grant from the National Gardening Association. The $500 award will be used to purchase and plant fruit trees at the center. The Center was one of 20 winners chosen from a pool of more than 500 applicants. The fruit trees will be incorporated into the already implemented garden curriculum such as watering, pruning, and feeding the trees, which will be part of the lessons children will engage in. When harvesting the fruit, it will be used in snacks and lunches for children. In 2009, the Child Development Center was nominated as an outdoor-classroom demonstration site by the Outdoor Classroom Project in Los Angeles County. The center serves as an example to other schools in Cerritos, Norwalk, and the surrounding communities to demonstrate the importance of investing in our environment. The children maintain and grow a vegetable garden, butterfly garden, herb garden and flower gardens. The children are able to see the sprouting of seeds, opening of buds and the growing and harvesting of the garden vegetables. At the end of the summer they enjoy eating the vegetables raw or through a variety of cooking experiences. The herbs are integrated into our children's meals. The center plans to invite faculty from the college's Science Department and master gardeners from the Fullerton Arboretum to come as guest speakers to provide expertise to the teachers and to further educate children about fruit trees and the maintenance. "The new addition of fruit trees to our center represents our commitment to preserving the integrity of the natural growth processes of living organisms, as well as fulfilling our roles as teachers to nurture and raise environmentally conscious individuals to ensure longevity and augmentation of our natural resources," said Debra Ward, director of the Child Development Center at Cerritos College. -MORE- 4

5 The Jamba Juice sponsored "It's All About the Fruit" tree grant award program was designed to provide grants to local schools to plant fruit trees as a fun, innovative way to promote nutrition education for young students. The program, administered by the National Gardening Association, addresses the need for students to learn about healthy lifestyle choices through fruit tree production and garden experiences. Through hand-on experiences with fruit production and maintenance of fruit trees over time, children gain valuable first-hand knowledge of growing their own food. -END- 5

6 Cerritos College offers day and evening ESL courses Orientation to be held July 18 WHAT: Cerritos College's Liberal Arts Division offers classes in English as a Second Language (ESL) with the start of the Fall semester on Monday, August 16, Classes are offered at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels, and are available for $36 per unit (most classes are three units). Several classes are offered during both the day and evening. Most classes meet twice a week and are available during both the 18-week session and the first and second 9-week sessions. ESL classes at Cerritos College offer: - Pronunciation - Oral communication - Speaking and listening - Grammar - Reading - Vocabulary - Writing and structure - American expressions and culture - Spelling - Editing The 18-Week Session runs from August 15 to December 16. The First 9-Week Session runs from August 15 to October 14. The Second 9-Week Session runs from October 17 to December 16. New student orientation will be held Monday, July 18. There are two sessions. The orientation will cover benefits of ESL credit classes and tips on becoming a successful language learner, U.S. college and classroom cultures and more. There will be drawings of ESL books. 7 Cerritos College to host 9/11 remembrance event Campus and community invited to memorialize 10th anniversary of national tragedy WHAT: The Associated Students of Cerritos College will host a 9/11 remembrance event "Celebrate America" on Monday, September 12, 2011 at 2 p.m. "Celebrate America" will feature bagpipes presentation, patriotic music, readings, and speakers. Community is invited to share memories of the tragedy that occurred ten years ago on September 11, 2001 by submitting the form. Selected comments will be shared at the event. The event also celebrates the anniversary of the United States Constitution and recognizes its importance in our nation's history. 8 Cerritos College administrator selected as fellow for national workforce development academy Belle Gomez, director of community advancement at Cerritos College, has been selected as one of 25 fellows for the Sector Skills Academy, a nation-wide operation that builds the skills of selected workforce leaders enabling them to take a sector approach to economic development. She will serve a oneyear term that runs until Gomez will participate in peer and classroom learning, site visits, and workshops, during which they will be encouraged to acquire new skills, engage in experiential learning, connect with peers, and build relationships with mentors and leaders. "This will be an opportunity to connect to a nationwide peer group and the college would benefit from this program," said Gomez. The 25 fellows represents state and local public agencies, community-based nonprofits, and community colleges and is helping prepare un- and under-employed individuals for jobs in a wide range of sectors, including health care, hospitality, manufacturing, renewable energy and energy efficiency, construction and logistics. The Academy, jointly operated by the Aspen Institute's Workforce Strategies Initiative and Public/Private Ventures, provides emerging leaders in the sectoral workforce development field with a unique professional development opportunity. 9 Cerritos College to present seminars on careers in technology Areas covered in workshops include composites, engineering and welding WHAT: Cerritos College will host a series of seminars on technology careers. The seminars provide participants with a better understanding of composites, engineering and welding and current opportunities within these industries. Participants will have an opportunity to meet the lead instructors with industry experience. Each seminar will cover: - Hands-on projects or demonstrations in the covered area - Information on additional courses and a training roadmap to achieve your educational goals - Information on how to obtain industry recognized certificates and/or certifications - information on relevant industries (aerospace, automotive, medical and manufacturing) to pursue a job Concepts covered in each seminar: Composites - Various fiber reinforcements - Fabrication of composite structures - Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) - Vacuum bagging processes Engineering - Design software to construct a bridge - Solder equipment to make an electronic printed circuit board - Predict deflection on beams - Program a robot to go through a maze Welding - Shielded metal arc welding - Gas metal arc welding - Cutting processes - Fabrication equipment Who Should Attend? The Technology Career Series is designed for career and workforce managers & counselors, business managers, students, and those in the field of design & analysis, manufacturing & fabricating, composite material, research, and testing & inspection looking to improve their skill sets.
