4 ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY The Association of Records Managers and Administrators The Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA) was estab lished in 1956 as the American Records Management Association and within a few years assumed leadership in the field of records and information management. In 1975, this organization merged forces with another group of professionals in the field, the Association of Records Executives and Administrators. The resulting organization was the Association of Records Managers and Administra tors. Today, ARMA has a membership of over 4,000 men and whomen who partici pate in the activities of more than sixty chapters in the United States and Canada. The major purposes and aims of ARMA are: (1) to promote a scientific interest in records and information management, (2) to enlarge the views and scope of service of those interested in records and information management, (3) to coordinate research and provide a source of records"and information management expertise, and (4) to develop and promulgate standards for those engaged in the records and information management field. Files management, forms management, reports management, and micrographics are but a few of the traditionally recognized records and information manage ment functions toward which ARMA has directed its attention. More recent trends in information management, such as word processing and automated infor mation systems, have been added, as they became part of the modern business environment. Recently, ARMA has established Industry Action Committees, for records management professionals who deal with specialized records in such pro fessional fields as engineering, architecture, and the nuclear industry, among others. New areas of interest continue to be explored. The Greater Seattle Chapter Growing steadily since its inception in 1964, ARMA's Greater Seattle Chapter currently has more than one hundred members, representing business, government, and educational and religious organizations. Monthly Chapter dinner meetings, the work of several standing and temporary committees, par ticipation in the biennial Region X seminars, and the presentation of a very successful biennial Greater Seattle Chapter seminar comprise the Chapter's major activities. In addition, the Greater Seattle Chapter has given and sponsored numerous workshops and seminars, and in 1974 hosted the associa tion's annual national conference. The Chapter's concern with enhancing the educational experience of records management professionals has extended to subsidy programs that support its own members' attendance at various national and local workshops and conferences, support of the scholarship program at Western Washington University, Bellingham, and the early support of the International Records Management Federation. The focus of the Chapter's monthly meetings is

5 a minute presentation, followed by a question-and-answer period. Speakers are chosen for their expertise in an area related to the field of information management; thus these meetings also serve to enhance the professional know ledge of Chapter members. GUIDE The Chapter's archival records have come to the University of Washington as two widely separated accessions (the first was received in 1974, the second received as the result of a collecting effort in 1985). An inventory for the first accession is attached as an appendix to this finding aid; the inventory that follows reflects the more recent collecting effort. In 1985, a formal collecting agreement was drawn up between the Greater Seattle Chapter and the University of Washington, to allow for the orderly and regular transfer of records to the Manuscripts Division. In addition, this find- ing aid was prepared on a computer, so that regular updating could accompany each transfer of records. The records have been arranged according to Record Groups and Record Series, and chronologically within each series by fiscal year (July to June), with the exception of financial records which have been arranged by calendar year. The inventory lists each file folder by Box and Folder number. Because of the regular updating scheme, the inventory will not show a contiguous listing of box and folder numbers, but rather the alphabetical and chronologi cal listings of Record Groups and Record Series. The current volume of records in this second accession is approximately 15 linear inches.
