6 Kansas City Hotel Failure Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel opened in 1980 Had three skywalks connecting the bedroom areas with the conference areas on all three levels July 17, 1981, a tea dance was held in the lobby area The lower two skywalks collapsed, plummeted to the lobby below Over 70 tons of concrete and girders fell to the ground 114 people killed and hundreds more injured. In original design, the top walkway was to be hung from the ceiling by long rods that passed through it and also supported the lower walkway Each bolt had to support only one walkway It was decided to replace each single rod by two shorter rods. The bolt under the top walkway had to support the upper and lower walkways, doubling the force on the upper bolt. The connection failed when the bolt pulled through the upper walkway and both walkways fell.

9 Who Is To Blame Lack of communication between G.C.E. (structural engineering firm) and Havens (steel construction company) Drawing prepared by G.C.E. were only preliminary sketches that Havens interpreted to be the finalized drawings Another large error was G.C.E.'s failure to review the final design which would have allowed them to catch the error The flaw was contained in the design and the construction techniques were not at fault. The construction was sound according to the imperfect design. G.C.E was found responsible for the collapse of the walkways Extensive investigation determined How the walkways collapsed Fourth floor collapsed first, directly onto the second floor, which caused it to collapse Design prints were changed with G.C.E. approval Both walkway designs were well below the required Kansas City Building Code
