Brief description and purpose of proposed program The Executive MBA (EMBA) program provides an opportunity for mid-career executives and experienced professionals to obtain a master s degree in Business Administration on a schedule that minimizes disruption of work and personal obligations. The program offers an integrated blend of theory and practice and provides a general management emphasis suited to the needs of mid-career executives and experienced professionals. It integrates professional experiences with graduate-level academic management curriculum. It familiarizes students with cutting-edge issues of disciplines in business that encompass management science for managerial decision making. It crystallizes the philosophy and capabilities of experienced professionals and, thus, fosters their professional growth. 2 to assure continuity in learning. The functionally integrated curriculum provides opportunity for gaining cross-functional skills and knowledge. The program includes a cohort of online courses that offers a lockstep, planned curriculum for midcareer executives and experienced professionals. The students of each cohort begin the program at the same point, move through the curriculum together, and complete the degree requirements for graduation at the same time. Executive MBA students are required to complete their degrees in two years. During that period, they gain a wide range of new skills and sharpen their analytical abilities by combining coursework with day-to-day professional experience. A unique aspect of the proposed EMBA program is the collective professional experience of its participants, which greatly enriches the educational environment. EMBA students possess several years of significant, post-baccalaureate professional experience. Most students continue to work full-time while enrolled in the program. B. Statement of degree or program objectives Business leaders face increasingly complex responsibilities, demanding extensive knowledge of all functional areas of business. They must maintain and enhance their managerial and leadership capital. To advance, they must acquire new skills and broaden their management perspective. The EMBA program will teach executive leadership by integration of knowledge, skills, and experience. The EMBA program is oriented towards managerial skills in problem identification and analysis, and application of managerial skills to discovery of alternative solutions. The program encourages application of theoretical solutions to real world business problems. The objective of the program is for the graduates to do the followings upon graduation: 1. To lead organizations, 2. To apply knowledge in new and unfamiliar circumstances through a conceptual understanding of relevant disciplines, and 3. To adapt and innovate to solve problems, to cope with unforeseen events, and to manage in unpredictable environments.. C. Plan for assessment of degree or program objectives All programs offered by the UNR College of Business are accredited by Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the highest level of accreditation in business education, and are required to develop assessment plans in compliance with the guidelines of assurance of learning established by AACSB. Progam objectives for EMBA are developed using the AACSB accrediation and assurance of learning guidelines. D. Plan for assessment of student learning outcomes and the use of this data for program improvement The details of assessment of student learning outcomes and objectives and implemenation plan of assessment results for program improvement are provided in the attachment to this form. E. Contribution and relationship of program objectives to i. NSHE Master Plan The Distance EMBA program is in accordance with the NSHE Master Plan as it improves accessibility for mid-career executives and experienced professionals to a quality program by allowing them to finish the program online. The online delivery of the program allows this group of students to earn a graduate-level management degree that they cannot pursue otherwise due to their work and personal obligations. 3 program recognized as one of the best programs in the U.S. by BusinessWeek, the most prestigious source for ranking of business schools. ii. Institutional mission The Distance EMBA program significantly contributes to UNR's mission of focusing on programs that are student centered and demonstrably excellent. It provides an integrated curriculum in management education by combining core business skills and knowledge with the practice and insight of mid-career executives and experienced professionals. The program builds on the existing UNR part-time MBA program where it has achieved national recognition by being ranked as the 21st best program in the U.S. and as the 5th best program in the West by BusinessWeek, the most prestigious source for ranking of business schools. ( It is noted that there are over 400 AACB accredited business schools offering part-time MBA. The program serves the institutional mission of being responsive to the needs of the state, local and regional communities as well as providing professional academic programs for a diverse student body. The online class structure will attract a diverse group of students and serve the community to fill an unmet need throughout Nevada. The institution's mission is committed to making UNR an increasingly dynamic resource for, and partner with, the community it serves. The Distance EMBA program serves the community through an integrated curriculum and innovative deilvery format that allows mid-career executives and experienced professionals the opportunity to pursue a graduate degree, contributing towards their professional advancement. It enhances interdisciplinary research and scholarship and collaborative endeavors with the community. iii. Campus strategic plan and/or academic master plan The Distance EMBA program relates to the UNR master/strategic plans. The program matches UNR's commitment for program initiatives that become a resource for research and education and meet its urban, state, and regional needs, while achieving parity with national peers. For example, Nevada does not have a Distance (online) EMBA program. Currently, there are 497 AACSB accredited institutions that have both graduate and undergraduate programs in business. Of the 497 schools, 70 have online MBA/EMBA programs. UNR's strategic plan states the importance of new program initiatives that improve student accessibility and emphasize research, scholarship, and instruction. The Distance EMBA program will be a two year program conducted online. The program structure makes a graduate education in management accessible to more students, which enhances faculty and student collaboration and provides a richer academic experience for all. iv. Department and college plan The Distance EMBA program is a college-wide program that will be offered by the MBA office in the College of Business at UNR in cooperation with the UNR Extended Studies. The program relates directly to the College of Business mission to advance the knowledge and practice of the disciplines that constitute business and to foster the workforce and economic vitality of the region. It relates specifically to the College's strategic goal of student success by eveloping a Distance (online) Executive MBA program allowing mid-career executives and experienced professionals to earn a graduate-level management degree that they cannot puruse otherwise due to their work and personal obligations. 3 (ACADEMIC, RESEARCH AND STUDENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE 03/10/11) Ref. 4 The program helps to enhance the Colleges' relationship with the community and its corporate partners. The graduates of the program will be in managerial and leadership positions, enhancing the strong relationship the College already has with key companies in Nevada. Faculty teaching in the program will use non-traditional and innovative technology in their course delivery. The teaching and learning environment will be: Appreciative of the students experience and knowledge, Collaborative where co-inquiring with classmates and instructors is encouraged, Proactive in the sense that students and instructors will experiment with new ways of framing their experiences, and Challenging the status quo in managerial decision making. Teaching these classes will be both challenging and rewarding. The College's best MBA faculty will be invited to teach in the Distatnce Executive MBA program. v. Other programs in the institution No other Distance (online) EMBA exists within UNR. vi. Other related programs in the System UNLV offers an Executive MBA where weekend courses are scheduled on-site. F. Evaluation of need for the program i. Intrinsic academic value of program within the discipline There is a huge opportunity to leverage UNR's part-time MBA program ranking to create an online distance EMBA program that will attract a larger pool of talented applicants and lead to an even stronger academic program. All classes are designed to reflect the extensive managerial experience of the students and bring to light current issues facing executives. The EMBA program will help keep faculty and, consequently, our entire business program innovative and current. The EMBA program is an academic discipline that lends itself well to distance eduation. The learning outcomes for an online EMBA will be just as strong, if not superior, to that of our onsite program. A dynamic and rigorous online program will enhance business education throughout the state as well the reputation of the College and the University. ii. Evidence of existing or projected local, state, regional, national and/or international need for program The business world is becoming increasingly complex. Leaders and managers are realizing the importance of acquiring the skills needed to compete in today's challenging business environment. The Distance (online) EMBA program recruits mid-career executives and experienced professionals to learn most recent developments in business disciplines and to advance their problem solving-skills, enabling them to become better managers and leaders. In Nevada, the need for well-trained executives will most likely increase as regional, state, and national economies improve. In addition to sustaining economic growth, graduate business education for executives is important in attracting new companies to northern Nevada. 5 expansion or relocation decisions. The Distance (online) Executive MBA program is designed to meet, at least initially, the educational needs of mid-career executives and experienced professionals employed in northern Nevada. Secondary markets for the program include the areas of eastern and northern California. Given the quality of UNR's part-time MBA program, we expect that the distance program will be competitive in national and international markets. The need for a Distance (online) EMBA program is demonstrated by the regular feedback that we receive from our corporate partners and Alumni Association. The scheduling demand from work and family is a major barrier for mid-career executives and experienced professionals to apply to our part-time MBA program. They tell us that the Distance (online) EMBA program is their only viable option to pursue a graduate degree in business. The UNR College of Business is committed to accommodate the professional needs of these students through the Distance (online) EMBA program. iii. If this or a similar program already exists within the System, what is the justification for this addition The proposed EMBA program will serve an entirely different geographical market than the one at UNLV. iv. Evidence of employment opportunities for graduates (state and national) Employment opportunities will not be an important factor for students that enroll in the Distance (online) EMBA program. The program will target potential students who are currently employed in mid- to upper level management positions or are owners of businesses. Their employers will be required to give a letter of support for the prospective students' participation in the program. Thus, it is expected that the graduates will continue working with their present employers while enrolled in the Distance (online) EMBA program. The program is designed to accelerate and enhance their careers. v. Student clientele to be served (Explain how the student clientele is identified) Student clientele is identified through the corporate contacts of the Office of Career Connections of the UNR College of Business and the executive mailing lists of the UNR Extended Studies. G. Detailed curriculum proposal i. Representative course of study by year (options, courses to be used with/without modification; new courses to be developed) The students of the Distance (online) EMBA will go through the program as a cohort, with the course scheduling being set at the beginning of the cohort's program. The academic guidelines of UNR Graduate School are applied to the program: students must maintain a cummulative GPA of 3.0 or better throughout the program. Students will receive an Executive Master of Business Administration degree. The program requires 36 credit hours of BADM (business administration) courses. The content of the courses will be customized to meet the need of executives. The courses will be offered online through UNR Extended Studies. Program entrance requirements Admission Requirements The Distance (online) EMBA program is open to those who hold a bachelor's degree from a four-year institution. Any undergraduate major is acceptable. If the baccalaureate degree is in business, it needs to be from an AACSB accredited college or university or its equivalent. The college is primarily concerned with the candidate's fitness for graduate study and promise of effective business performance. A judgment of these qualities is made from the following information: undergraduate record, results of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), letters of recommendation, a written personal statement indicating the candidate's educational and career objectives, a resume detailing professional experience. The applicant will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in oral and written communication. 7 indicating the candidate's educational and career objectives and other writing samples the applicant may wish to have considered. Applicants need to have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and be able to use it for word processing and spreadsheets. Admission Standards The followings are the minimum standards required for admission to the Distance (online) EMBA program: 1. The applicant must have a baccalaureate degree from a four-year institution. 2. The applicant must have an overall grade-point average (GPA) of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. 3. The applicant must have significant professional work experience beyond undergraduate studies. 4. The applicant must submit the GMAT results prior to admission. International students must have a minimum TOEFL score of 550 or above (paper-based test) or 213 or above (computer-based test) or 79 or above (internet based TOEFL). For IELTS, you must have a score of 7 or above. The TOEFL is waived for students who have completed degree programs conducted in English in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia or New Zealand. iii. Program completion requirements (credit hours, grade point average; subject matter distribution, preprogram requirements) The Distance (online) EMBA requires 36 credit hours of BADM (business administration) courses. The academic guidelines of UNR Graduate School are applied to the program: students must maintain a cummulative GPA of 3.0 or better throughout the program. Students will receive an Executive Master of Business Administration degree. iv. Accreditation consideration (organization (if any) which accredits program, requirements for accreditation, plan for attaining accreditation - include costs and time frame) AACSB accreditation process will include Distance (online) Executive MBA program. v. Evidence of approval by appropriate committees of the institution The proposal for Distance Executive MBA was approved by: 1. Readiness to begin program i. Faculty strengths (specializations, teaching, research, and creative accomplishments The courses of the Distance (online) Executive MBA will be taught by the MBA faculty of the UNR College of Business. These are faculty with national and international recognition in their respective fields along with extensive professional background. Contribution of new program to department s existing programs (both graduate and undergraduate) and contribution to existing programs throughout the college or university The Distance (online) Executive MBA program complements the existing undergraduate and graduate programs in the UNR College of Business. With students of the program being midcareer executives and experienced professionals, this creates a unique opportunity for students and faculty to initiate collaboration and projects that contribute to bring in state of the art business knowledge and practice in other courses of other programs taught by these faculty. In addition, the EMBA program is valuable to graduates with degrees other than business in that it provides them with management education that may not have been a core component in their undergraduate studies yet is critical to advancing their careers. iii. Completed prior planning for the development of the program (recent hires, plans for future hires, securing of space, curricular changes, and reallocation of faculty lines) A taskforce of UNR MBA faculty was appointed by the Dean of the UNR College of Business in the fall The taskforce examined the online EMBA/MBA programs offered in Arizona, California, Oregon, Utah and Washington to determine curriculum, delivery and pricing of the Distance (online) UNR Program. The program will build on the existing capacity and will consist of the existing BADM (business administration) classes offered by UNR College of Business. The program will be offered through a joint effort with the UNR Extended Studies where it does marketing, recruitment and online course delivery of the program. iv. Recommendations from prior program review and/or accreditation review teams n/a v. Organizational arrangements that must be made within the institution to accommodate the program The Distance (online) Executive MBA program will be offered through a joint effort between College of Business and Extended Studies at UNR. I. Resource Analysis i. Proposed source of funds (enrollment-generated state funds, reallocation of existing funds, grants, other state funds) The Distance (online) Executive MBA program is planned as a self-supporting program and will not require additional resources from the state. The program will be funded through Extended Studies by charging a program fee of $2,000 per course which is a competitive market price determined by examining online EMBA programs in Arizona, California, Oregon, Utah and Washington. The program will build on the existing capacity and will consist of the existing BADM (business administration) classes offered by UNR College of Business. The UNR College of Business faculty will teach in the program as an overload. The program will be offered through a joint effort with the UNR Extended Studies. Extended Studies will handle the marketing, recruitment and online course delivery of the program. ii. Each new program approved must be reviewed for adequate full-time equivalent (FTE) to support the program in the fifth year. The funding listed in the New category of the budget ($180,000 in year 1, etc.) will be provided by the $2,000 per course fee paid by the students. The program includes a cohort of 12 online courses that offers a lockstep, planned curriculum for mid career executives. The students of each cohort begin the program at the same point, move through the curriculum together, and complete the degree requirements for graduation at the same time in two years. Students pay a fee of $2,000 per course. The faculty of UNR College of Business will teach the courses of the program as an overload. The administrative and tech support for the Executive MBA program will be provided by UNR Extended Studies. With respect to "Other Resources" no additional library or other resources will be necessary for the program as existing library materials will support the Distance (online) Executive MBA program as other business programs are also supported. 15 Accelerated BS/MS Program in Engineering 3/6/08 College of Engineering, University of Nevada, Reno Background An Accelerated BS/MS Program encourages our outstanding students in the College of Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno to obtain an MS degree. Data from the NSF s Science and Engineering Indicators provides the number of BS and MS degrees each year (see Table 1). The results imply that approximately 1/3 of all people who earn a BS go on to receive an MS degree. This does not include the number of foreign students that come to the US to earn an MS Degree or US students that go abroad. It does show the importance of an MS Degree. ASCE Policy 465 states the following: The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) supports the concept of the Master's degree or Equivalent as a prerequisite for licensure and the practice of civil engineering at a professional level. ASCE encourages institutions of higher education, governmental units, employers, civil engineers, and other appropriate organizations to endorse, support, and promote the concept of mandatory postbaccalaureate education for the practice of civil engineering at a professional level. The implementation of this effort should occur through establishing appropriate curricula in the formal education experience, appropriate recognition and compensation in the workplace, and congruent standards for licensure. There are numerous programs around the country that offer combined/accelerated BS and MS programs (see Table 2). There are combined/accelerated BS/MS degree programs offered around the country for all the programs offered in the UNR College of Engineering. The table is not complete but provides an idea of the traits of some of the programs. The most common programs have the following traits: 1) Application for admission during the 2 nd semester of the junior year, greater than 75 credits towards their BS degree. 2) Admission GPA requirement of 3.2 in credits that count towards a BS degree. 3) Six credits of course work are double counted towards both the BS and MS degrees. After admission into the Accelerated Program, students can register for limited number of graduate level courses as a BS student. 4) Students must maintain a 3.2 GPA to stay in the program as a BS student. 5) Students are moved to the Graduate School after completion of BS requirement and meeting all the requirements of the Graduate School and the chosen department. 6) BS is awarded when all credits are earned for the BS degree. 7) A student can do either a thesis or a non-thesis MS degree. The graduate academic advisor must be in the area of specialization that the student has selected for their graduate degree. In order to stay in the program, a student must maintain at least a 3.2 GPA in their UNR degree required courses. Upon completion of all BS requirements, a student will receive their BS degree. A student must complete the BS degree at UNR to be part of the Accelerated BS/MS Program. During their senior year, student will apply for admission into the Graduate School. The student must meet all the requirements of the Graduate School and the MS degree granting department. This may include a GPA and/or GRE requirement. Only 9 credits of graduate work can be completed before entering into the Graduate School. The GRE would be taken during the 1 st semester of the student s senior year. Continuation in the Program Continuation in the program requires that students maintain a grade point average of 3.2 or higher. If a student s GPA drops below 3.2, the student will be placed on academic probation within the program for one semester. If the student raises their GPA to 3.2 or higher, he or she will be removed from probation and returned in good status to the program. If after one semester the student is not able to raise their GPA sufficiently, they will be removed from the Accelerated Program. Introduction All programs offered by the UNR College of Business are required by Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the highest level of accreditation in business education, to develop assessment plans. The learning goals and objectives for Distance Executive MBA (EMBA) are developed based on the full evaluation of UNR MBA courses. The results of this evaluation is presented in Table 1. The UNR MBA Office will collect data on student learning goals and objectives collected for courses of each cohort of the Distance EMBA.
