Torn between art and social sciences, she discovered architecture as the perfect fit. Studying architecture has allowed me to express my creativity while learning the technical fundamentals of design and construction. The teaching staff at UniSA have encouraged me, throughout my studies, to explore my interests and this has enabled me to develop my own style of design. The University also provides opportunities for hands-on learning. I travelled to Vanuatu to work collaboratively on designing tourist accommodation on Tanna Island. This experience opened my mind to the impact that built environment can have on a community. I saw first-hand how small architectural insertions can have great effect in changing the social dynamic. Innovative designs Practical experience led Robert to design an awardwinning medical training aid which is currently licensed to and produced by German company VBM Medizintechnik. Working on real-world projects for real clients, as part of my study, led to designing a medical training aid, together with another student, over an 18-month period. The product has won a number of awards including the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) SA Branch Gold Student award, DIA SA Branch Premier s Award and has been a James Dyson Award National Finalist. The benefits of undertaking such projects is that they come with real research to do, users to survey, clients to please and constraints to design around these sort of things just can t be emulated. Postgraduate Studying at UniSA gave me the opportunity to work on what I enjoy alongside like-minded people. I worked on a wide range of interesting projects, learnt a host of useful skills and made a number of valuable contacts. Note: eligibility for entry into a research program is also subject to an assessment of the proposed research, the availability of a supervisor and any school or research-specific eligibility requirements. An enticing challenge Nathan discovered an interest in interior architecture theory while writing his Honours thesis. He wanted to explore the impact his ideas and research could have for both the teaching environment and his own studio practice. I enjoyed studying my undergraduate degree, and had established strong connections with the staff in the program. I was encouraged by their support and interest in my ideas, particularly as UniSA is the only university in the state to offer interior architecture. I was also enticed by the challenge of thinking at a PhD level! As my ideas are new and constantly evolving, I feel that the environment at UniSA, physically and academically, is the most aligned with my interests and needs as an emerging thinker in the field. Having the freedom and the dedicated time to broaden my knowledge and then find applications for those insights is very rewarding.
