5 Why is Broadband Important to Education Paul Otellini of Intel at the World Congress on Information Technology WCIT Austin, Texas May 2006 described three things required in today s world: a computer a broadband service and education And when referring to broadband he meant fast, not half a megabit per second Technology is now helping students help themselves, and the issue of broadband access is also crucial to delivery of education and learning Senator Helen Coonan speech to WCIT 2006 Teachers are asking for good quality real time interaction both for collaboration with other teachers in developing learning resources and interaction with students.

14 A National Video-Conferencing (VC) Service? Early applications such as: - Cultural interactions between two schools nationally or internationally (e.g. Japan in same time zone) - Language teaching - Minority group teaching - Virtual field trips to national and state cultural organisations National VC standards and gatekeepers Bandwidth needed is 384kbps or 768kbps
