Too Good to be True? (Almost Free) Refurbished Computers for Rural Special Education Programs presented by Ron Seiler Idaho Assistive Technology Project University of Idaho
Facts about the Program Goals and Objectives Increase availability of computers & assistive technology in rural areas Close gap between urban & rural schools Close digital divide Replace aging technology Obtain sustainability for the Idaho AT Reutilization Project
Facts about the Program Partnership Computers for Kids Idaho AT Reutilization Project Idaho State Department of Ed
Facts about the Program Funded with startup support from the Idaho AT Reutilization Project Support has been provided by the ISDE & IDVR & IATP Computers for Kids is amazing!!
How Does the Program Work? Designed for rural schools Definition of rural schools: A school district shall be considered a rural school district if it meets one of the following two criteria: (a) There are fewer than twenty (20) enrolled students per square mile within the area encompassed by the school district's boundaries; or (b) The county in which a plurality of the school district's market value for assessment purposes is located contains less than twenty-five thousand (25,000) residents, based on the most recent decennial United States census. (2) A public charter school shall be considered a rural public charter school if the school district in which the public charter school is physically located meets the definition of a rural school district, pursuant to subsection (1) of this section. Public charter schools that are also virtual schools shall be considered a rural public charter school if over fifty percent (50%) of its enrolled students reside within school districts that meet the definition of a rural school district, pursuant to subsection (1) of this section. (Idaho Rural Education Task Force)
How Does the Program Work? Schools can apply for computers every two years All applications will go thru the IATP Applications are available on line at IdahoAT.org or by calling IDA-TECH All applications are due 60 days before the pick-up date All applicants will be assigned a distribution date & pick-up location by the IATP
How Does the Program Work? Distribution Location and Dates Due Dates for Applications Twin Falls - January First Friday in November Lewiston April First Friday in February Idaho Falls July First Friday in May Post Falls October First Friday in August
How Does the Program Work? Computers will be distributed in Twin Falls (January), Lewiston (April), Idaho Falls (July), & Post Falls (October) Districts in driving distance of Boise can pick up their computers at CFK (by appointment) Schools should be conservative so there are enough computers for all districts This is not a one time opportunity!
How Does the Program Work? Computers are equipped with: XP Professional OS Pentium 4 CPU Hard Drive 40 gigs or more Memory monitor DVD Player 101 Keyboard Mouse Sound Card Floppy Disk drive Tech Support for One Year (Computer for Kids also provides an opportunity to purchase a variety of upgrades and enhancements.)
How Does the Program Work? Fees IATP/ISDE will pay these fees: Processing fee Upgrades and enhancements Laptops may be available from time to time School districts are responsible for purchasing adaptive hardware and software
How Does the Program Work? School districts are responsible for picking up the computers at the designated location & date School districts are responsible for setting up the computers and ensuring they are in working order Computers for Kids provides technical assistance for one year To receive this assistance call
How Does the Program Work? Computers are intended for use in the special education classroom, and not in the general education classroom or the school s computer lab The exception is when school districts have enough computers for their special education classrooms Computers can be placed in general education classrooms or computer labs, as long their use is related to implementing IEP goals for a specific special education eligible student
