2 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES The acute management of critical brain injury has undergone substantial evolution in recent years. State-of-the-art care is being changed by the availability of new technologies and pharmacologic interventions that focus on minimizing neurologic injury in the emergency room and. This course is designed to help practicing emergency medicine physicians, neurologists, neurosurgeons, intensivists, hospitalists, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professions gain familiarity with advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques that apply to patients with acute neurological injury. The program will focus on both basic and advanced topics related to the management of life-threatening stroke, cardiac arrest, status epilepticus, and severe traumatic brain injury. A comprehensive course syllabus containing PDF files of all presentations, references, and management protocols and checklists will also be provided in the form of a USB drive. On conclusions of this activity, participants will be able to: Day 1: Integrate streamlined emergency management algorithms and real-time communication systems into your hospital s acute stroke care protocol, with the goal of reducing door-to reperfusion times. Day 2: Incorporate ultrasound, external compression devices, therapeutic hypothermia, and end tidal CO2 monitoring into standards ACLS for cardiac arrest, with the goal of improving survival to ROSC. Day 3: Discuss the latest evidence related to multimodality monitoring, hemicraniectomy, and hypothermia in the treatment of severe TBI, and determine when these interventions should be appropriately utilized. Day 4: Integrate the principles of basic neuroresuscitation (ENLS) and advanced techniques for managing difficult challenges (Master Class) into your daily practice.
