Building: School Design for 21st. C. Schools School Design for 21st. C. Schools The current conundrum facing schools and their design is that we have Information-age kids trapped in Industrial-age schools: In a world where ideas and information are increasingly fluid and in flux, we frame (conceptualize) and construct schools that are fixed in time and space. For schools who are engaged in new thinking about curriculum and program and schedule (more flexible/less rigid, more student-driven/less teachercentered, more experiential/less classroom-bound, more related to how students learn than to how schedules can conform to adult priorities, etc.), it is time to apply the new rubric and concepts to the design of schools. Some preliminary thoughts for design considerations: Connectivity is key: All faculty and kids should be able to connect via laptops to the school's server and thus to the Internet from any space in the school. This recommends more electrical outlets and data ports that would be typical otherwise, and their placement in hallways, lecture halls, etc. The basic rule of thumb should be in academic and dormitory areas, every student should have proximate access to power and data ports. A wireless solution should definitely be considered. Classroom size is flexible: Program, not space, should determine the number of students per class and therefore the size of classrooms. With an integrated curriculum, there will be occasions when multiple sections of a class or of two classes (math and science, history and English) should meet together in a single space. Although independent school class sizes now tend to range from students in elementary classes and students in secondary classes, class sizes will inevitably increase in the future (to afford more generous salaries, schools will have to have more tuitions per teacher). Therefore in planning new academic facilities, each class unit should be generously apportioned (to accommodate up students.) There should be sound-proof dividing walls (on tracks) separating some classrooms so that at least some classrooms could be opened to accommodate multiple sections: e.g., 25, 50, 75 students. Square footage per classroom unit should accordingly err on the generous side: 900 square feet. Security for classrooms should be provided through swipe smart card access (and for dorm rooms, too) so that authorities can determine who entered a room and when, if necessary.

Classroom furnishings are mobile: Since pedagogy in 21st. C. schools will be varied, arrangements of classroom furnishings must be flexible. Within a single class period, teachers can and will lecture, conduct seminar discussions, break students into teams to work on projects, allow students to work at their laptops on individualized learning programs. Furnishings should include the following: student desks that can be configured easily into small group and large group circles; large tv/tuner/monitor that is suspended in a corner for all to see; surround-sound for high quality audio; digital whiteboards for classroom notes to be retrieved and distributed electronically. Student course load is demanding: Since colleges and university admissions offices remain bound by traditional course and credit articulations, secondary students for the foreseeable future will still offer transcripts that read in Carnage units. Typically for those aspiring to attend selective colleges and universities, the four year program of studies would include 4 years of English and math, at least three years of history, foreign language, and science (and typically 4 years of some or all of these disciplines), plus a semester, a year or more each of the following: religion/ethics, the arts, computer, public speaking. Thus, students will likely take 6 courses and attend class 5 or 6 periods in an 8-period day (although the notion of fixed periods will disappear, as students meet in blocks of varying lengths depending upon the learning experience to be undertaken.) Student/teacher ratios are higher: Although currently the ratio of students to teachers is 10:1 in independent day schools and 8:1 in independent boarding schools (and the ratio of students to total employees is 5:1 and 3:1 respectively), the ratios will inevitably increase (i.e., more students:employees) if we are to have competitive salaries and reasonable tuitions. New schools in particular should plan for higher ratios, probably in the neighborhood of 15:1 for day schools and 10:1 for boarding schools (and correspondingly higher ratios for total employees, 7:1 and 5:1 accordingly, keeping the same ratio of an equal number of non-teachers and teachers making up the total number of employees). Thus, we can anticipate and plan for classroom sizes of in day schools and in boarding schools. Students at the secondary level take 6 courses meeting 4

times per week = 24 classes. Teachers at the secondary level teach 6 courses meeting 4 times per week or 5 classes meeting 5 times per week = 24/25 classes per week (in boarding school, spread over 6 days). Teachers deserve professional settings: As the demand for quality teachers rises and the supply decreases as current demographics project, a school's climate and setting for teachers will become increasingly important to attract and retain effective teachers. Schools will find ways to demonstrate visibly that teachers are valued as professionals. Architects will act accordingly. Preferably, each teacher would be assigned his or her own designated classroom/office combination, thus utilizing the classroom space for teaching 5 periods each 8-period day, and using it the other periods for planning and student conferencing purposes. Alternatively, a school could build fewer, generic classrooms and add a small, private office (in departmental or grade level clusters) for each teacher. Plan on one dedicated classroom/office per teacher or plan on one office per teacher plus shared classrooms on a ratio of 2:3 (i.e., two classrooms for every three teachers.) Each classroom/office would provide the teacher a desk with docking station for his or her laptop, cabling to the classroom printer and large-screen monitor (hanging from the ceiling and visible to all in the class). Incorporated into the classroom/office desk area would be the teacher's conference area with some comfortable seating, telephone, lockable bookshelves and cabinetry. Each classroom would have a solid wood and soundproof door looking into it with one-way glass and would be wired with mike and speakers (plug in headsets available from the administrator's office) for class observances from the hallway by visiting parents or colleagues, so that visitors could observe the class without disturbing it. Classes could be videotaped in like fashion without the introduction of the foreign element into the classroom itself. A teachers' lounge would be equipped with state of the art equipment (copiers, computers, printers), with breakout rooms for departmental meetings, and with one secretary's office (with a secretary assigned exclusively to the faculty.) There will be no P.A. system in the school, much less in the classroom, so classes will not be interrupted by disembodied voices sharing announcements: Instead, electronic announcements will be posted in real time on electronic kiosks in central meeting places throughout the school.

The workplace will be family-friendly: Day care will be provided for employees in an area adjacent to a natural place for congregating (mail room, faculty lounge, etc.) so that employees can pop in to see their children when convenient. Health-care professionals will be available for faculty and family members on the same basis as for the students in the school. Expansion of the school will be built in: Especially for schools that are starting anew, expansion to a larger size will be built in from the beginning. For a school that anticipates the possibility of doubling in the future, the shell and infrastructure for a duplicate academic wing will be built from the beginning. Common spaces will be designed on an oversized basis, for balconies to be added as enrollment increases. Common spaces will be multi-purpose: A central "town meeting" space will serve multiple functions: for all-school meetings, auditorium, movie theater, lecture hall, chapel, with appropriate offices overlooking and supervising the space. The library/media center will be central to the school's design and identity: Like Border's and Barnes & Nobles bookstores, the library/media center will be a place people will congregate and socialize. It will house a bistro (a la Starbucks, the school's' one and only snack bar), music (live on occasion), books and tapes and video sections to lend as a library and to sell as a bookstore, reference and periodicals areas, etc. Everyone will be welcome, day and night, and encouraged to talk if they like. Comfortable chairs will be situated in nooks and crannies throughout the space. Surrounding the library and looking into it will be soundproof rooms: Some for group work, some with "powertool labs" of the latest technologies in them (robotics, interactive video, etc.), some with study carrels. The school bookstore may occupy the same space or be integrated into it.

The dining room/cafeteria: Large enough to accommodate the entire school for periodic sit-down meals, with advisors and advisees at one table (round table seating 12). Closed off area for waiters to pick up food for sit-down meals or for buffet cafeteria-style for all other meals. Conveyor belt for trays of dirty dishes. Above all, schools for the 21st. C. will have a human scale and feel, a foundation of rocksolid permanence, but many, many, many windows and a grand sweep pointing to the wonders of the universe Author: Patrick F. Bassett, 3/1/99
