1 Saint Anne s Terrace, INC Northside Parkway, N. W. Atlanta, Georgia You put into life what you get out of it. When you love, you receive love. Laugh and the world laughs with you. Trust your children, believe in them and they will reward you with love and respect. Be thoughtful and kind to those who serve you and good service will be your reward. When things do not go just right today remember tomorrow is another day. Vince Cater President Board of Directors Ruth Craven July 19, 1913 February 14, 2015 Terri Monroe Executive Director David Brooks Director of Shared Services Visit us at and check us out on Facebook and Twitter March 2015 THIS ISSUE: Resident s Corner Doings at the Terrace Meet the Board Spotlight on the Staff Terri s Corner Ten Things We ll Lose 1. The Post Office - It s time to imagine a world without the post office. They are so deeply in financial trouble that there is probably no way to sustain it long term. , Fed Ex, and UPS have just about wiped out the minimum revenue needed to keep the post office alive. Most of your mail every day is junk mail and bills. 2. The Check - Britain is already laying the groundwork to do away with checks by It costs the financial system billions of dollars a year to process checks. Plastic cards and online transactions will lead to the eventual end of the check. This plays right into the death of the post office. If you never pay bills by mail and never receive them by mail, the post office will go out of business. 3. The Newspaper - The younger generation simply doesn t read the newspaper. They certainly don t subscribe to a daily delivered print edition. That may go the way of the milkman and the laundry man. As for reading the paper online, get ready to pay for it. The rise in mobile internet devices and e-readers has caused all the newspaper and magazine publishers to form an alliance. They have met with Apple, Amazon, and all the major cell phone companies to develop a model for paid subscription services. 4. The Book - You say you will never give up the physical book that you hold in your hand and turn the literal pages. We said the same thing about downloading music from itunes. We wanted our hard copy CD, but the we quickly changed our mind when we discovered that we could get albums for half the price without ever leaving home to get the most recent music. The same thing has happened with books. You can browse a bookstore online and even read a preview chapter before you buy, and the price is less than half that of a real book. Think of the convenience! (Continued on Page 2)

2 Resident s Corner Birthdays Memorials/Donations Age ain t nothing but a number and you prove it each and every day! We ve hit the ground running in 2015 with some of the most fun parties and events we ve had in recent memory. So stay in tune with all that s going on here at the Terrace and we ll have more memorable moments like the ones you ll find below...and remember to keep on keeping on! Ten Things (cont.) Once you start flicking your fingers on the screen instead of the book, you find that you are lost in the story, can t wait to see what happens next, and you forget that you re holding a gadget instead of a book. 5. The Land Line Telephone - You simply do not need it anymore. Most people have it simply because they ve always had one. It s silly because you are paying double charges for that extra service. All the cell phone companies will let you call customers using the same cell provider for no charge. 6. Music - This is one of the saddest parts of the change story. The music industry is dying a slow death. Not just because of illegal down loading. It s the lack of innovative new music being given a chance to get to the people who would like to hear it. Greed and corruption are the problem. The record labels and the radio conglomerates are simply self-destructing. Over 40% of the music purchased today is catalog items, meaning traditional music the public is familiar with, older established artists. This is also true on the live concert circuit. To explore this fascinating and disturbing topic further, check out the book, Appetite for Self- Destruction by Steve Knopper, and the video documentary, Before the Music Dies. (Continued on Page 8) Happy Birthday to All! 1 Tim Grant, Staff 2 Majorie Thomason, Katherine Hardy, John Feeley, Curtis Wiley, Staff 9 Edna Tex Kinzer, Jim Barnwell, Mary Ann McCusker, Teresa Aversa, Mary Bowie, Ruby June Reinbolt Julia Hunter, Cynthia Melancon, Staff 29 Linda Micucci, Jane Pinkston, 311 Melissa Baugher to Saint Anne s Terrace Mary Bowie to Saint Anne s Terrace in memory of Sandy Nolting Betsy Brooks to Saint Anne s Terrace in memory of Ruth Craven Annie Dimon to Saint Anne s Terrace in memory of Sandy Nolting Kathryn & Ward Miller to Saint Anne s Terrace in memory of Betty June Anderson Winnie Pannell to Saint Anne s Terrace in memory of Ruth Craven Francie Ross to Saint Anne s Terrace in memory of Sandy Nolting Francie Ross to Saint Anne s Terrace in memory of G. G. Gunter Meet the Board (cont.) Chris and Amy have the challenge of juggling their careers (Amy often must travel with her design work) and time with their two young daughters - Claire and Catherine, 3 years and 18 months respectively. This necessitates planning and sometimes, reliance on Amy s parents, Jane and Jim Sibley. When time allows, Chris pursues his hobbies, cooking and reading about politics and the economy. He loves preparing meats on his three outdoor grills where he is not daunted by the size of the crowd. He has grilled $200 of beef tenderloin at one time! He does not use recipes. It s the experimentation which gives him the charge. In his words, Either it works or it doesn t. The Board is delighted to have Chris on the Board where as Treasurer, he also serves on the Board Executive Committee. When you see this young man at the Terrace, ask him about his bedtime reading to his daughters and his face will light up as he tells you about the stories and two of the three loves of his life! - Winnie Pannell, Board of Directors 2 11

4 Spotlight on the Staff Our glamorous blonde staffer, Lorraine Stewart, holding down with both hands the job of receptionist at the front desk, is the happiest she has ever been! She admits life has not always been easy and has endured some hard times until recently, when she found herself at Saint Anne s, happily married and at the top of her game. Born in Los Angeles, she and her sister don t have a lot of great family memories. Her father was a music producer, working with groups such as Dion and the Belmont s and the Venture s. He was missing much of the time. After her parents divorce when she was 15, she lived with her mother who was a teacher. Lorraine met her first husband when she was 18, right after high school. I was a typical Valley Girl, she claims. They got married soon after they met and had a son, Jason. They moved to a small community in the mountains, Lake Hughes, north of Los Angeles near Edwards Air Force Base. They lived in a small cottage, heated with firewood and only had one old car that her husband drove to work and back. Even though they had a very limited income, Lorraine could not bear to leave Jason with a babysitter so she was a stay at home mom. It was pretty solitary so I didn t have a lot of people to talk to so I talked politics and some pretty adult topics with my 3 year old. One day 3 year old Jason ran into the house shouting, The Ku Klux Klan is out there! He knew how scary they were, slamming the door as though to protect his mother. In the 80 s, when Jason was 11, Lorraine and her husband got divorced and she found a job at the Essex House Hotel where she worked her way up to Operations Manager, working directly under the Owner. Her confidence rose as she dealt with people, including celebrities and dignitaries for the next 14 years. One of the handsome guests was Charley Ramsey, who was in the Coast Guard and on loan to the Air Force. After living together for the next 8 years, they moved to Atlanta where Charlie worked at Lockheed Martin. Her son Jason stayed in California, working and going to school. Meanwhile Lorraine got her real estate license, and started in residential sales; then moved on to work as a sales agent for Pulte Homes. It was during the 2000 housing boom and Lorraine was one of the top agents in the Atlanta area. Three and a half years later, Lorraine announced: I m moving to the beach!! Charlie was supportive, quit his job, and they bought a house in Tarpon Springs, Florida by the ocean. Their dreamy beach life was soon interrupted by a phone call: Jason had had a serious motorcycle accident, going 60MPH without a helmet on. Fortunately, the only injury was a broken femur, which made Jason realize that he needed to get his life together. Luckily, his family got him into rehab for a full year. Lorraine flew to California every 2 weeks for the next 2 years. Jason has now continued his education, is a supervisor for a roofing company and intensely involved in AA. Lorraine speaks with him every day. Lorraine and Charlie decided to move back to Atlanta in Charlie got back on board with Lockheed Martin and she luckily got a call from Burl Gault, her friend and the former Executive Director of Saint Anne s, asking her to come to work as the receptionist. (Continued on Page 8) Meet the Board of Directors The young age of Board member Christopher Chris Underwood belies his life experiences political campaigner, truck liability claims adjuster, appellate court clerk, attorney with a nationally noted firm, husband, father, and chef. Raised in Columbus, Georgia where his father s Army Ranger posting moved the family from Tucson, Arizona, Chris played high school ball well enough to win a baseball scholarship to a junior college, Andrew College, Cuthbert, Georgia. After his pitching career was interrupted by injury and surgery, Chris transferred to the University of Georgia where he earned a degree in political science and became a Dawgs Fan. In his last year at UGA, carrying only one course, Chris joined then Lieutenant Governor Mark Taylor s campaign team in the hard fought 2006 gubernatorial primary and general election races and got a taste of real politics. Although incumbent Governor Sonny Purdue defeated Mark Taylor in the general election, Chris thrived on the challenge of co-creating the campaign Research Book - reading thousands of newspaper articles and decades of Georgia Senate journals and absorbing a 20 year history of Georgia politics. Following the conclusion of the campaign and graduation, through a friend Chris found work as a trucking division claims adjuster with AIG, the nation s largest insurer. After a couple years wrangling with personal injury attorneys, Chris stuck to his dream of becoming an attorney, but was convinced that he eschewed conflict and needed to be a collaborator. Chris then had three eventful years of school at Mercer s Walter F. George School of Law. The most significant highlight of these years was his marriage to Amy Sibley, a graduate of the UGA Terry College of Business, who then was well into her career as a designer with Jacquelynne P. Lanham Designs, Inc., Jackye Lanham, one of Atlanta s finest interior design firms with high profile accounts in the country and abroad. Following his first year of law school Chris was selected for the prestigious position of clerk to Georgia Court of Appeals Judge Gary B. Andrews. Chris thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity to get an inside look at the workings of this appellate court. His second year at Mercer was capped by a clerkship with the Atlanta office of the Macon-based law firm, James-Bates-Brannan-Groover- LLP, which materialized into his hire at the conclusion of law school, when he graduated cum laude. Chris s two years at this firm gave him experience in transactional finance work, primarily with community banks. In December, 2014 Chris moved to a larger firm in Atlanta, Hunton & Williams LLP, an old line Richmond-founded law firm, which has grown into 19 offices throughout the country and the world. Feeling he has found his niche where collaboration leads to high finance win-win, Chris s focus is on representation of investment banks and funds in asset-based lending transactions with middle-market companies. He enjoys the legal intricacies and assisting parties to attain a mutually satisfactory objective. Chris also takes pleasure in participating in the firm s acclaimed pro bono project, the Southside Legal Center, where firm attorneys provide legal services to low-income residents. 5 Ten Things (cont.) 7. Television Revenues - Revenues to the networks are down dramatically, not just because of the economy, but because people are watching TV and movies streamed from their computers, smart phones and other devices. They re also playing games and doing lots of other things that take up the time that used to be spent watching TV. Prime time shows have degenerated down to lower than the lowest common denominator. Cable rates are skyrocketing and commercials run about every 4 minutes and 30 seconds. It may be time for the cable companies to be put out of our misery. Let people choose what they want to watch online. 8. The Things That you Own - Many of the very possessions that we used to own are still in our lives, but we may not actually own them in the future. They ll simply reside in the the cloud. Today your computer has a hard drive and you store your pictures, music, movies, and documents. Your software is typically on a CD, so you can always reinstall it if need be. All of that is changing. Apple, Microsoft, and Google are all finishing up their latest cloud services. That means that when you turn on a computer, the Internet will be built into the operating system. So, Windows, Google, and the Mac OS will be tied straight into the Internet. If you click an icon, it will open something in the cloud. If you save something, it will be saved to the cloud, and you may pay a monthly subscription fee to the cloud provider. In this virtual world you can access your music, books, or whatever from any laptop or handheld device. That s the good news. But will you actually own any of this stuff, or will it all be able to disappear at any moment in a big poof? Will most of the things in our lives be disposable and whimsical? It makes you want to run to the closet and pull out that photo album, grab a book from the shelf, or open up a CD case and pull out the insert. 9. Cursive Writing- Already gone in some schools who no longer teach cursive because nearly everything is done now on computers or keyboards of some type (pun not intended). 10. Privacy - If there ever was a concept that we can look back on nostalgically, it would be privacy. That s gone. There are cameras on the street, in most of the buildings, and even built into your computer and cell phone. You can be sure that 24/7 they know who you are and where you are, right down to the GPS coordinates, and the Google Street View. If you buy something, your habit is put into a zillion profiles, and your ads will change to reflect those habits. They will try and get you to buy something else. Again and again and again. All we will have left that can t be changed are our memories. Logic is dead. Excellence is punished. Mediocrity is rewarded and dependency is to be revered. This is present day America. When people rob banks they go to prison. When they rob the taxpayer they get re-elected. - Submitted by Betty Benson Spotlight on the Staff (cont.) She happily settled into a job she loved, while rebuilding a house in Marietta with Charlie. By 2011 they decided to get married, in their lovely new home, with Benita Johnson, her Saint Anne s co-worker, standing in her wedding. Lorraine s favorite hobby is attending garage sales. I m good at decorating with second hand stuff, she laughs. I got good at it when I was poor! - Emily Cumming A Note from Your Library Books let us into their souls and lay open to us the secrets of our own (William Hazlett). We have enough book lists now to get us through May. If you want this column to continue, keep making your lists. Here are your next two. Cynthia Westergaard 1. Gone with the Wind, Mitchell 2. The Hobbit, Tolkein - Betty Watkins Renovations are well under way. The ceiling tiles and lighting on the first floor have been completed. The dining room ceiling and lighting should be completed by the time this issue of the Terrace Talk is published. The renovation in the kitchen begins Sunday after the Violin Recital on March 1 st. The decorating committee met on February 26 th. Once the work is completed in the dining room and the kitchen, the carpet and painting will begin. I am not sure as of yet if the paint and carpet will start in the dining room, or in the south hallway. I will keep you informed of the progress as we move forward. The Valentine s Day Party was wonderful! The music, food and dancing couldn t have been more perfect. Everyone seemed to have a fantastic evening. I hope all of you are enjoying the new programs with the children from the day school. It is so fun to see how engaged the children are with all of you. I think my favorite, was the day they were here and did a clay project in the activity room. There was a lot smiles and laughter! Remember, my door is always open for questions, concerns or feel free to drop in and say hello. - Terri Monroe 8 5
