2 Backgrund Canadian Liver Fundatin (CLF) is a nn-prfit rganizatin devted t prviding supprt fr research and educatin int the causes, diagnses, preventin and treatment f liver disease. By recgnizing the fact that there is a high prevalence f liver disease in Canada s immigrant ppulatin, CLF believes that supprting liver-related clinical research internatinally culd ptentially imprve the liver health amng immigratin applicants and ultimately reduce the future burden f liver diseases in Canada. China is ne f the leading cuntries f rigin fr immigratin t Canada. China als has the largest ppulatin with viral hepatitis and liver cancer in the wrld. Fr these reasns, the CLF has initiated cntact with dctrs and researchers frm China t explre their needs regarding liver-related clinical research and educatin. China has achieved great success since the Chinese ecnmic refrm started abut 30 years ag. China s fast grwing ecnmy allws the Chinese gvernment t invest heavily n health care facilities and health technlgies acrss the cuntry. Many tertiary hspitals in China are equipped with the mst advanced machines and technlgies in the wrld and the clinical skills f Chinese dctrs have been substantially imprved. Hwever, the clinical research capacity in China is still under develpment because the cncept f knwledge translatin has nt been fully established and recgnized by health care prviders and health plicy makers in China. The current clinical practices in China are mainly based n ut-dated textbks, persnal experiences, and expert pinins which cmbined, have the ptential t impair efficacy f clinical practice and health plicy-making. There are few graduate prgrams r curses specifically designed fr clinical epidemilgy and health technlgy assessment in the medical universities in China, therefre, Chinese dctrs d nt have an pprtunity t imprve their clinical research methds. Cnsequently, clinical studies cnducted in China are ften inadequately designed and seldm published by high impact medical jurnals. Frtunately, health authrities in China have recgnized the imprtance f clinical research and have initiated refrms t create a universal and sustainable health care system. Clinical research has becme an imprtant indicatr fr assessing the perfrmance f clinical dctrs fr academic prmtin and health plicy-making nw pays mre attentin t research evidence. The Chinese gvernment is prviding funding t encurage internatinal research cllabratin with develped cuntries (including Canada) and many tertiary hspitals are prmting clinical research by prviding financial supprt fr verseas training. Based n input frm liver dctrs in China and wrking with several leading Canadian universities in clinical liver research, the CLF has develped a six-mnth clinical research training prgram in hepatlgy t meet the educatin needs f clinical scientists fr liver diseases in China. Objectives CLF Internatinal Clinical Research Training Prgram in Hepatlgy has been designed t imprve clinical research capacity f clinical dctrs specializing in liver disease. The main bjectives fr this training prgram are: Understanding the fundamental thery and methdlgy f clinical epidemilgy. 2 P a g e

3 Understanding the structure f the Canadian health care system and the Canadian mde f clinical practice related t liver diseases. Understanding hw t apply clinical research evidence int clinical practice by ding clinical bservatin in leading university teaching hspitals in Canada. Ability t develp research prtcls tailred t their speciality and incrprating cmmn clinical research methds. Ability t independently cnduct a research prject that will lead t a publicatin in an internatinal medical jurnal. Engaging the Canadian clinical researchers and develping clinical research cllabratin. Prgram Overview This six-mnth clinical research training prgram includes: One-mnth clinical research curse at Trnt Health Ecnmics and Technlgy Assessment Cllabrative, University f Trnt 30 intrductry lectures cvering the fundamental theries and methds f clinical epidemilgy and health technlgy assessment. Develpment f a research prpsal that will be cnducted in the five-mnth clinical bservatin in the assigned liver center. Five-mnth clinical research training in ne f the teaching hspitals assciated with the University f Trnt, the University f British Clumbia r the University f Calgary. Observing clinical practice, peratin, and management in the assigned clinical centre accrding t trainee s clinical speciality. Cnducting the research prject develped in the research curse under the supervisin f the assigned clinical mentr. Participating in academic activities related t trainee s clinical speciality in the assigned clinic, hspital r university. Writing the scientific manuscript fr the assigned research prject (can be cmpleted in China after 6-mnth training prgram if nt cmpleted while in Canada). CLF Internatinal Clinical Research Training Prgram in Hepatlgy plans t recruit 10 Chinese trainees fr the 2012 class in the fllwing clinical specialities: Chrnic viral hepatitis (B and C): 2 trainees Hepatcellular carcinma: 2 trainees Liver failure: 2 trainees Liver transplantatin: 2 trainees Hepatbiliary surgery: 1 trainee Paediatric hepatlgy: 1 trainee The 2012 CLF Internatinal Clinical Research Training Prgram in Hepatlgy is expected t be launched mid-august 2012 with 6-mnth training cmpleted by mid-february P a g e

6 Cllabrating Organizatins Eligibility Criteria Minimum eligibility criteria fr applicatin t 2012 CLF Internatinal Clinical Research Training Prgram in Hepatlgy includes: A master r dctr degree in clinical sciences. At least five years f clinical practice in hepatlgy. Have a level f English sufficient t understand class lectures, write assignments, and take part in class discussins. Tuitin Fees The tuitin fees fr 2012 CLF Internatinal Clinical Research Training Prgram in Hepatlgy is CAD$30,000. The tuitin fees include Canadian Visa applicatin, dmestic and internatinal flight fare, and living expense (fd, accmmdatin, lcal public transprtatin, and medical insurance) during the six-mnth training. Applicatin Prcedure The candidates meeting minimum eligibility criteria are encuraged t apply t this clinical research training prgram.
