Georgia 2013 Conference for College and University Auditors Distance Learning: Looking to the Future Samuel S. Conn, Ph.D.
Presentation Agenda Distance Learning: What s the Big Deal? Successful Implementations Challenges and Risks Shifting from e-learning to m-learning The technologies involved MOOCs Some Good Resources for Auditors
Distance Learning: What s the Big Deal? More than 6.7 million, or roughly a third, of all students enrolled in postsecondary education took an online course for credit in fall 2011.
Big Deal cont d. More than 7 in 10 public and private colleges are now offering full academic programs (as opposed to merely freestanding courses) online, far more than were doing so a decade ago.
Big Deal cont d. Nearly 7 in 10 chief academic leaders (69.1 percent) now say that online learning is critical to their long-term strategy. And just 11.2 percent say it is not. More than three-quarters (77.0 percent) of chief academic officers rate the learning outcomes in online education as the same or superior to those in face-to-face courses, up from 57.2 percent when first asked the question in 2003.

Distance Learning in Higher Education: Successful Implementations Equivalent student experience Instructional design as a foundation for pedagogy Qualitative course assessments Total Quality Management through continuous feedback loops Tightly coupling of educational design and delivery with information technologies Adapted business processes
Challenges and Risks in Online Learning Continuous quality improvement Technology integration Cost of online course development and delivery Student engagement and persistence Student ethics and assessment Global competition Service delivery
Moving from e-learning to m- Learning What is e-learning? What is m-learning? Why the shift? What are the implications? BYOD, etc. What s involved?
21 st Century Distance Education: The Technologies Learning Management Systems (LMS) Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) Video and Web Conferencing Student Relationship Management systems Digital documents and workflows Web presence Mobile applications Virtual Desktop Integration (VDIs) Web 2.0 technologies Digital Learning Object creation tools Learning Analytics
Some Current Trends e-learning to m-learning Digital content support (e.g., e-texts) Analytics and Big Data Advancement from course level delivery to program level delivery National and international consortia and partnerships Standards for digital learning objects/content Free, open online courses
MOOCs.What s Involved? Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) Originally coined in 2008 by Dave Cormier from Prince Edward Island University for a large online class taught by George Siemens and Stephen Downes
MOOC Characteristics World-wide distribution of participants Range from a few hundred to several thousand participants Course content found all over the WWW Interaction can occur on blogs, social networking sites, and other digital forums Content can be aggregated, remixed, and repurposed during the course No formal syllabus, just rough schedules Generally free, but some charge for accreditation
Why the interest in MOOCs Technology is improving and as a result, so is the online learning experience. May be a solution to the increasing cost of higher education Allows participants to build personal and professional skills sets in their own time.
