HCA Physician Services (Austin, TX) Practice Management Consultant (Independent Contractor) 10/ /2012 Under contract to serve as Interim Administrator for Cardio Texas, a 4-physician practice in the St. David s Healthcare system. Worked with system leadership to open a hospital-based cardiovascular imaging center that is projected to generate $2M in provider-based imaging revenue for the hospital. Remained actively involved in day-to-day operations to ensure cardiologist satisfaction with the new model. Led a billing reorganization that resulted in the hiring of a certified coder and utilization of Front Office employee for charge posting (increase from 1.0 to 2.5 FTEs), relocation of billing department to enhance communication and accountability, and engagement of outside consulting firm to perform massive cleanup of Return to Practice queue. During six month consulting contract, was able to improve on various performance metrics such as office charge lag (30% to now 90%+ of charges posted within 0-2 days) and A/R days (from 60+ to 45). Opened two satellite office locations in Kyle, TX and Bastrop, TX in order to expand community presence, improve service model, and increase practice revenue. Implemented PQRS and e-prescribing programs to meet HCAPS goals for Medicare quality reporting. Served as internal project manager for the practice to implement a practice management system (GE Centricity) and a remote charge capture solution while also transitioning to a new outsourced accounts receivable management firm. Provided operational consultancy to identify root causes of inefficiency and patient/employee dissatisfaction. NextGen Healthcare Information Systems (Austin, TX) EHR Implementation Project Manager 07/ /2011 Provided overall project management and leadership in the implementation of EHR systems for critical access hospitals. By working collaboratively with internal interface, software development, systems engineering, support and training resources, and client project team members, a successful implementation outcome was sought for the hospital. Developed, managed and executed medical client software development lifecycle (SDLC) projects and Electronic Health Records (EHR) development software for hospitals nationwide. Diligently worked with hospital stakeholders and vendor implementation team to oversee business requirements, scope of work, resources, budget development, risk mitigation strategy, and project scheduling needs. Managed overall IT infrastructure implementation needs for hospital clients. Delegated project assignments, prepared and submitted project timetables, managed and controlled change related to cost, time, scope and quality baselines, and monitored status of all project milestones and delivery dates. Worked intimately with hospitals medical and nursing staff side using the newly-integrated information system through mock trial runs and go-live scenarios. Integrated third party vendor systems such as pharmacy, lab, radiology and registration systems with pricing and billing systems, ensuring every system was properly interfaced before signing off. Austin Sports Medicine (Austin, TX) Practice Administrator 03/ /2011 Chief Executive Officer responsible for all aspects of practice management, revenue cycle performance, and IT infrastructure. Managed 10 multispecialty providers (Sports Medicine/Orthopaedic surgeons, Physiatry/PM&R physician, Joint Replacement surgeon, and Physical Therapists) with annual net revenue of $7M. Position evolved into a more boundary spanning / change management role in later years, in light of necessitated changes in the industry and local marketplace. Improved total net revenues 11% in first year and sustained revenue cycle performance in subsequent years despite a declining reimbursement climate. Effectively managed the re-organization of the practice s billing department whereby lowering Days in A/R and A/R >120 days to within the 90 th percentile of the 2010 MGMA Cost Survey. As liaison between the majority physician investment group and the operating partner, Symbion, worked intimately with ASC leadership to improve business and clinical operations at Central Park Surgery Center. In partnership with D1 Sports Training and Therapy and NFL athletes Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley, played an instrumental role in developing a de novo athletic training and rehabilitation facility in order to diversify revenue and expand market share in a new catchment area. Evaluated with due diligence the capital acquisition of a Digital Radiography (DR) system that led to a Q installation. Supply cost savings, operating efficiencies, discounted pricing, and Section 179 tax planning allowed business to see an immediate Return on Investment. Acting as a liaison between the Physician Board of Directors and an associate physician, negotiated a buy/sell agreement that financially benefited the partnership and maintained collegial physician relations during the new partner assimilation process. Added Joint Replacement Surgeon to the group (August 2010). Successfully negotiated provider reimbursement contracts for managed care plans and clinical investigator research services to infuse additional revenue streams into the practice. Also negotiated a professional liability insurance renewal agreement that decreased the group s malpractice expenses 21%. Rightsized departmental duties, implemented a productivity-based benchmarking system, and upgraded technology that resulted in higher employee performance, improved employee retention rates, and marked operational efficiencies within the Front Office. Launched a focused, results-oriented marketing campaign that culminated in a flagship sponsorship of LIVESTRONG Austin event and a CME conference for primary care physicians. Specifically tailored the group s strategic marketing plan by utilizing internal patient surveying and website analytics. Implemented a practice management system, patient web portal, and DME inventory management system.
