2 Transforming the Neighborhood Transforming Chicago s southwest side neighborhood, Focal Point Community Campus is a breakthrough model for urban community rejuvenation. Mixed-use Facility, Retail Component Focal Point will be a mixed-use healthcare facility and is being developed by Chicago Southwest Development Corporation (CSDC), a not-for-profit development corporation that focuses on creating unique and innovative community projects. Their focus is bringing together private and public partnerships that result in self-sustaining financial business models that support the needs of the community. A $436 million dollar new groundup development project, Focal Point will be a new community campus, located on an 11-acre site at 31st Street and South Kedzie Avenue, and will be over 1 million square feet. Focal Point will include various retail such as fashion retailers, restaurants and specialty stores. It will offer recreation facilities such as a soccer field, basketball courts and Olympic-sized pool. The site will be the home of a new complex for Saint Anthony Hospital, and will provide educational opportunities such as parenting classes, seminars, wellness programs. The community campus will also offer other services such as arts programs, entertainment, and a hospitality center for community members to rent for personal use. Parking, convenient public transportation, as well as child care are other great amenities Focal Point will have to offer. The community campus is a first of its kind development designed to empower the more than 400,000 residents in Chicago s west and southwest sides. 6 Innovative, Financially Self-Sustaining Campus Saint Anthony Hospital leaders originated the idea for Focal Point and created the Chicago Southwest Development Corporation (CSDC) as a not-for-profit organization to develop and maintain the Focal Point property. A private/public partnership, Focal Point has been designed to be financially self-sustaining. The income from its for-profit elements will supplement the financial needs of the not-for-profit elements. This business model will set the standard for other communities and community campuses throughout the United States. City of Chicago s Support Mayor Rahm Emanuel knows that unless you dream big, it is impossible for big things to happen. Mayor Emanuel takes Daniel Burnham s mantra to make no small plans to heart. A new Opportunity Planning initiative, the City of Chicago has identified key community development areas as part of a comprehensive effort to maximize opportunities for neighborhood growth and community improvement and will be leveraging $2.9 billion including $330 million public funding and $2.6 billion in private funding - in new economic development, housing, and quality of life improvements for residents and businesses. Mayor Emanuel has targeted these seven communities of Bronzeville, the Eisenhower Corridor, Englewood, Little Village, Pullman, Rogers Park and Uptown to make these big plans.
